Isostacy is a geological principle that applies Archimedes' law to the movement of tectonic plates. Archimedes' law states that an object submerged in water will displace a volume of water equal to its own volume, and the buoyant force on the object will equal the weight of the displaced water. This principle explains how tectonic plates can "float" on the denser mantle rock below.
