Hotels provide accommodation, meals, and other facilities for tourists and travelers. The oldest hotel still in operation is the Hōshi Ryokan in Japan, founded in 717. Hotels are classified based on factors like star ratings, size, ownership, location, facilities, and market segment. The hotel industry has grown from early inns and establishments providing lodging to a wide range of accommodation options worldwide.

What is a hotel? Hotel is an establishment that provides services such as accommodation, meals and other facilities required for tourists and travellers for different purposes. Who is a Guest? A guest is defined as a person who is in a physical, mental and financial state to avail the services and facilities offered by a catering establishment.
Origin of hotel industry •It is believed that a rest house was built in Florence, Italy in 1282. •Self service style inns started in Paris in 1312. •Café and Coffee houses were opened by Mr. Pascal in 1650 in Paris and London. •1750-1820 Industrial revolution in England- Finest in the world.

Growth of organised Hotel Industry • City Hotel was first in New York in 1794. • Tremont House- A first class hotel in Boston in 1829. • First Railway hotel in London and Birmingham in 1839. • Bristol one of the best hotels in London was built in 1880.
