Binomial System
TAXONOMY:
 taxis : arrangement and-nomia : method
 The term taxonomy was coined by the Swiss botanist A.P. de
Candolle
 Scientific study of naming, defining (circumscribing) and
classifying groups of biological organisms based on
characteristics.
HISTORY OF PLANT NOMENCLATURE:
 The Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus is regarded as the founder of
the current system of taxonomy, as he developed a ranked system
known as Linnaean taxonomy for categorizing organisms and
binomial nomenclature for naming organisms.
 A key event was Linnaeus’ adoption of binomial names for
plant species in his Species Plantarum (1753).
NOMENCLATURE:
 Plant nomenclature is also called as Botanical nomenclature
 Scientific naming of plants. It is related to, but distinct from taxonomy
 Botanical nomenclature is governed by the International Code of
Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), which replaces
the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN).
 Another set of rules, the
International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP)
which applies to plant cultivars that have been deliberately altered or
selected by humans.
BINOMIAL SYSTEM:
 The scientific names of plants are usually composed of two
parts:
Genus name (written with an initial capital letter)
and
Specific epithet (written in lowercase).
 Eg: Scientific name for the "Rosa canina,"
Rosa- genus - it includes various species of roses.
canina- species - particular type of rose, known
as the "dog rose."
Principal ranks in modern use
 Kingdom Plantae
 Phylum (division): Magnoliophyta
 Class : Liliopsida
 Order : Liliales
 Family: Liliaceae
 Genus: Lilium
 Species: candidum
 The binomial nomenclature simplifies the identification and
organization of the vast diversity of life on Earth and remains an
essential tool in the field of biology and the study of biodiversity.
