INTRODUCTION
Mythical Narratives in Comparative European Literature
The study of myth has become integral to cultural and literary
criticism. Thus, myth criticism has taken on a comparative and inter-
disciplinary approach. This approach is essential for unravelling why
myths exist and what they convey within narratives and work of arts
as well as addressing their historical reinterpretation.
In this context, the concept of function, as José Manuel Losada
claims in the article that opens the volume, underscores the importance
of understanding the relevance of myths in contemporary society. This
functional approach highlights the convergence of elements from the
immanent and transcendental worlds. Myths often point to something
beyond the ordinary that needs to be preserved, and ultimately, they
serve the purpose of addressing fundamental questions about the origins
and ultimate destinies of the cosmos and humanity. The connection
between cosmogony and eschatology is reflected in the role of myths
as travelling concepts. Myths, both ancient and modern, can serve as
symbols that bring diverse communities together, fostering a sense of
shared identity and common understanding. In the European context,
their study unveils the fundamental common core within the multi-
plicity of cultures.
Myths often involve transitions between opposites, such as life and
death, human and divine, chaos and order, and so on. These transitions
reconcile contradictions within human existence. In this regard, Asun
López-Varela Azcárate explores the Labyrinth as a narrative, a map, and a
dance. Viewed from a comparative perspective, the Labyrinth illustrates
the consequences of choices and actions, calling attention not only to
metaphysical aspects but also to the transformative power of human agen-
cies and their changing impact on individuals and societies. Ultimately,
envisioned as a dance performance, the Labyrinth traces crucial steps in
the story, creating tension, suspense, and audience engagement. It mirrors

  • 3. INTRODUCTION Mythical Narratives in Comparative European Literature The study of myth has become integral to cultural and literary criticism. Thus, myth criticism has taken on a comparative and inter- disciplinary approach. This approach is essential for unravelling why myths exist and what they convey within narratives and work of arts as well as addressing their historical reinterpretation. In this context, the concept of function, as José Manuel Losada claims in the article that opens the volume, underscores the importance of understanding the relevance of myths in contemporary society. This functional approach highlights the convergence of elements from the immanent and transcendental worlds. Myths often point to something beyond the ordinary that needs to be preserved, and ultimately, they serve the purpose of addressing fundamental questions about the origins and ultimate destinies of the cosmos and humanity. The connection between cosmogony and eschatology is reflected in the role of myths as travelling concepts. Myths, both ancient and modern, can serve as symbols that bring diverse communities together, fostering a sense of shared identity and common understanding. In the European context, their study unveils the fundamental common core within the multi- plicity of cultures. Myths often involve transitions between opposites, such as life and death, human and divine, chaos and order, and so on. These transitions reconcile contradictions within human existence. In this regard, Asun López-Varela Azcárate explores the Labyrinth as a narrative, a map, and a dance. Viewed from a comparative perspective, the Labyrinth illustrates the consequences of choices and actions, calling attention not only to metaphysical aspects but also to the transformative power of human agen- cies and their changing impact on individuals and societies. Ultimately, envisioned as a dance performance, the Labyrinth traces crucial steps in the story, creating tension, suspense, and audience engagement. It mirrors
