IASH, SINCE 50YEARS
 The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH, University of Edinburgh)
was founded in 1969 at the University of Edinburgh, for visiting fellows to
engage in study and research in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The
current Director (since 2017) is SteveYearley.
 Since 1969, IASH has received visits from over 1,300 fellows. Up to 25 Fellows are in
residence at any one time, and visits last between two months and ten months.

MY FELLOWSHIP –VISITING SCHOLAR (IASH-SSPS FELLOWSHIP)
Project: Cities and scientific visibility in the UK: the case of Edinburgh
 February to August 2018; April - May 2019
 My project deals with the contemporary place of UK cities in the world system of scientific production. It combines
bibliometric approaches and qualitative case studies. Combining a long scientific tradition, strong life sciences capabilities
and a growing empowerment, the dynamics of Edinburgh's scientific visibility will be examined. A specific focus will be
on the way cities function as a hub of knowledge production in the Northern part of the UK.The study will also involve
more detailed analysis of specific and well developed fields of science in this region: molecular biology and data science.
 This project contributes to the geography of science research agenda. First, it relates to the distribution of knowledge in
the UK and its world integration. Second, it involves case studies on specific fields that bring new insights relating to the
production and circulation of knowledge.Third, data retrieval and processing aim at developing and sharing tools that
can improve the understanding of contemporary science. By combining sources, scales, and methods, this project intends
to provide deeper insights into a challenging problem: the possible optimization of spatial arrangements in the context of
contemporary science, and how countries can help their cities and researchers to cope with increasing diversity and
polycentrism at global level.
HOW IS IT LIKE TO DO A FELLOWSHIP AT IASH?
 Linking with local researchers and IASH fellows
 Attending weekly « work in progress » seminaries and communTuesday lunch at IASH
 Having an access to a desk in IASH building, coffee, tea, and local electronic and library ressources
 Having access to assistance to organise a one-day workshop (thanks to IASH staff)
 Receiving a newsletter every week informing us on local academic events
 Lots of social interactions, a stimulating environment to do research, but often a « time-issue », most fellows give
the impression that they're running out of time and that their fellowship experience is too short
 Even if the world and the external constraints of the profession do not disappear during the fellowship, it feels
like a breathing and creative time
IAS NETWORKS AND FELLOWSHIPS
 Fund It: Grants and Fellowships in Social Sciences and Humanities  https://fundit.fr/en
 EURIAS: The EURIAS Fellowship Programme is an initiative of NetIAS (Network of European
Institutes for Advanced Study). The Network brings together 24 Institutes for Advanced Study across
Europe. It was created in 2004 to stimulate a dialogue on IAS practices and possible forms of cooperation.
Within the whole network, more than 500 researchers are hosted every year for up to one full academic
year  http://www.2018-2019.eurias-fp.eu/ (10-month residencies – 19 cities, no call for 2020-2021)
 NetIAS: All the calls from the 24 European Institutes in this network  http://netias.science/call-for-
applications
 RFIEA: Réseau Français des Instituts d’Études Avancées (4 Institutes – France). Created in 2007, awarded
the Laboratory of Excellence (Labex) label in 2012  http://rfiea.fr/
 UBIAS: University-based Institutes for Advanced Studies (45 Institutes - worldwide) 

IN FRANCE, IAS ARE AN EMANATION OF EXCELLENCE POLICIES
(POST 2005)
 RFIEA members: Collegium of Lyon (2006), IMERA de Marseille (2007), IEA of Nantes (2008), IEA of PARIS
(2011)
 RFIEA: French network of IAS created in 2007,
 €14.15 million in 2007 from the French State and its founding members
 €8.50 million contribution in 2012 as part of the national "Investments in the Future" programme
Other French IAS:
 USIAS of Strasbourg (2012 – IDEX related)

THE EXAMPLE OF LYON – FOCUS ON « EXCELLENCE »
 « L’Institut d’un territoire d’excellence
 l'Université de Lyon
 Les IEA se répartissent entre deux modèles : indépendants ou ancrés dans une université. Le Collegium de Lyon a
adopté celui de l’University-Based Institute for Advanced Study (UBIAS).

ONCE UPON A TIME… « A PARADISE FOR SCHOLARS »
 The first IAS: founded in 1930 as a postdoctoral research institution in Princeton
 Created by Abraham Flexner, He envisioned a “free society of scholars and [graduate] students devoted to the
higher training of men and to the advancement of knowledge.”
 Acc.To Björn Wittrock, the sources of inspiration were All Souls College at Oxford and the Collège de France
 Focus on interdisciplinary, basic, curiosity-driven & long-term research, free intellectual meeting places, free
pursuit of learning
 Subsequent IAS: Dublin (1940), Palo Alto (1954 – related to the Ford Foundation), Shimla (1964), Bielefeld (1968),
Wassenaar (1970), Canberra (1973), Berlin (1978 – including links to music, literature and arts), Research Triangle
(1979), Kansai (1984), Uppsala (1985), Budapest (1989; 1992), London (1994), Beijing (1997), Sofia (2000),
Copenhagen (2000 – 2008 ; 2016), Stellenbosch (2005), Amsterdam (2013)

IASH, SINCE 50YEARS  The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH, University of Edinburgh) was founded in 1969 at the University of Edinburgh, for visiting fellows to engage in study and research in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The current Director (since 2017) is SteveYearley.  Since 1969, IASH has received visits from over 1,300 fellows. Up to 25 Fellows are in residence at any one time, and visits last between two months and ten months. • 7. MY FELLOWSHIP –VISITING SCHOLAR (IASH-SSPS FELLOWSHIP) Project: Cities and scientific visibility in the UK: the case of Edinburgh  February to August 2018; April - May 2019  My project deals with the contemporary place of UK cities in the world system of scientific production. It combines bibliometric approaches and qualitative case studies. Combining a long scientific tradition, strong life sciences capabilities and a growing empowerment, the dynamics of Edinburgh's scientific visibility will be examined. A specific focus will be on the way cities function as a hub of knowledge production in the Northern part of the UK.The study will also involve more detailed analysis of specific and well developed fields of science in this region: molecular biology and data science.  This project contributes to the geography of science research agenda. First, it relates to the distribution of knowledge in the UK and its world integration. Second, it involves case studies on specific fields that bring new insights relating to the production and circulation of knowledge.Third, data retrieval and processing aim at developing and sharing tools that can improve the understanding of contemporary science. By combining sources, scales, and methods, this project intends to provide deeper insights into a challenging problem: the possible optimization of spatial arrangements in the context of contemporary science, and how countries can help their cities and researchers to cope with increasing diversity and polycentrism at global level.
  • 8. HOW IS IT LIKE TO DO A FELLOWSHIP AT IASH?  Linking with local researchers and IASH fellows  Attending weekly « work in progress » seminaries and communTuesday lunch at IASH  Having an access to a desk in IASH building, coffee, tea, and local electronic and library ressources  Having access to assistance to organise a one-day workshop (thanks to IASH staff)  Receiving a newsletter every week informing us on local academic events  Lots of social interactions, a stimulating environment to do research, but often a « time-issue », most fellows give the impression that they're running out of time and that their fellowship experience is too short  Even if the world and the external constraints of the profession do not disappear during the fellowship, it feels like a breathing and creative time

» Source: https://collegium.universite-lyon.fr/l-institut-d-un-territoire-d-excellence--23162.kjsp?RH=1531727839463
