SEDIMENTATION
INTRODUCTION
Sedimenta on is the process of le ng suspended solids se le by gravity. This is accomplished by decreasing the velocity of the
slurry/liquid being treated to nearly half the se ling rate of suspended solids in a tank.
We also assist your team to establish deten on me, se ling rate/overflow rate and se ling area for the design flow necessary for
sizing of the se ling tank for various process applica ons.
Commonly known as gravity se lers by process engineers these are tanks where solids are se led naturally or with chemical aid and
concentrated slurry is removed as underflow and clarified liquid as overflow.
A mechanism is used in these gravity se lers, to scrape the se led sludge at the bo om of the tank towards the central sludge pit
con nuously. The mechanism is driven by a “Drive System” mounted on the support beams or concrete pier at the top of the tank. The
liquid overflows through the peripheral weir at defined loading to ensure desired velocity resul ng in proper clarifica on

The different types of “MECHANISMS” are described below :
BRIDGE MOUNTED MECHANISMS
Alias A-TYPE / FIXED BRIDGE / CENTRAL DRIVEN MECHANISMS
In this type of Mechanism Design a High Torque Drive / Drive Head is supported by a fixed bridge spanning the tank known as mechanism
support and Central sha suspends both rake arms to sweep full tank bo om once or twice every revolu on. The load/Torque on the rake
arm is defined by the process & the concentra on which in turn dictates the complete Mechanism Design. A carefully Designed Mechanism
ensures the process runs flawlessly for decades together. A feed well is o en used to kill the turbulence, ensuring the sludge blanket at
bo om or overflow hydraulics are not affected. Op onally Skimmers, Weirs, Baffles, Sludge Sampling systems (TSDP) are offered. ATypical
Drive System for above mechanism comprises of Cast Worm Wheel driven byAlloy steel Worm & Worm Sha enclosed in cast iron Housing

Trac on Mechanisms are considered more economical with lower solid content the are with single rake arm suspended from rota ng
bridge, & having a single Worm Gear box & Motor Driving the Peripheral Trac on wheels. The system mainly consists of a Central Turn
Table of suitable ra ng with a Pivot arrangement on which rests the rota ng bridge; A carriage with two PU or Rubber Lined Wheels
carries & rotates the bridge from the peripheryalong the Circularpath oftank.
The Trac on Mechanisms are preferred for Large diameters with Single as well as double sweep which can be achieved by pu ng two
drives or designing a centre cage + rake arms suspended from rota ng bridge. Skimmers, Scum Trough & Baffles with these mechanisms

Introduction
Wastewater aera on is the process of
introducing atmospheric oxygen (O2) into
wastewater to facilitate the aerobic bio-
degrada on of pollutants. The ac vated
sludge process is the most common form of
aerobic biological wastewater treatment.
This popular process relies on aera on to
promote the rapid reproduc on of micro-
organisms that break down organic ma er
in the wastewater. Aera on also raises
dissolved oxygen levels in the final effluent
which in turn helps sustain plant and animal
life in the receiving rivers and lakes.
Hence, the efficiency of biological treatment plants depends considerably on the quality and suitability of
the aeratorused.The majorfactors to be considered in the selec on of aerators are the basin dimensions,
the required amount ofoxygen and mixing.
Why to choose mechanical surface aerator ?
Mechanical surface aerators are widely used for many applica ons in modern wastewater
treatment. They transfer atmospheric oxygen to the liquid by surface renewal and exchange. This
provides the mixing necessary for distribu on of the aerated liquid throughout the tank. Mechanical
aerators have found favour because they dispense with the compressors, air-cleaning devices, piping,
& diffusers, and their maintenance, which are necessary with injected-air systems, and because they
fit into a widevarietyof tank shapes, not being bound to the depth and width structures common with
diffused airsystems.

DRIVE HEADS
Ÿ These Drives are typically made of CS or Graded Iron
Worm Wheel resting on a large size Bearing (Steel Balls &
Bearing Strip Liners forming a bearing cage) driven by
Alloy Steel Hardened worm fixed to the Worm Shaft. The
EN8/EN19 Worm shaft is driven & coupled by suitably
selected Gear box & Motor.
Ÿ The Worm Shaft, Worm, Worm Wheel with all bearings,
Adaptor & Thrust collar are Splash Oil Bath Lubricated in
a Gear Housing & Top covered with a housing cover.
Ÿ The gear housing & cover are typically shaped to give
large base & easy foundation holes, Oil Indicator, Oil
Drain, Inspection Cover & Seals / gaskets to be put in

Ÿ These systems are most popular for being robust in construction and are mounted on the Centre Pier or
Centre Column. These are very cost effective mechanisms for reducing the high cost of full spanning
Mechanism Support to a mere half walkway bridge.
Ÿ A typical Construction consists of a Cast Iron Turn table cum housing which is fixed on the Centre Pier and
encompasses the Rotating Internal Gear with its large diameter caged bearing. The Rotating Internal Gear
are provided with 4 or 8 Lugs as integral part to suspend the centre cage / rake arms.
Ÿ The Rotating Internal Gear housed in the Turn Table is driven by an alloy Steel Pinion through a Worm & Worm
Wheel Upper Gear Housing forming the Second Stage Reduction of the Drive Mechanism. The Upper Gear
Housing & the Lower Turn Table both are oil bath lubricated arrangement with proper seals , interchangeable
bearings & Oil Indicator/Drain arrangements.

Ÿ Typically such drive consists of Alloy Steel Integral Worm Shaft assembled on End Bearings to drive the Worm
Wheel (CS/Gr.CI/Bronze) resting on a large size heavy duty bearing. A Quill shaft is assembled in Worm Wheel
Hub with an additional Steady Guide Bottom Bearing. These set of bearings forms the Bearing Housing
necessary to take High Speed High Torque required in the Application. These Drives are housed in a CS/CI
housing with large capacity Oil bath for continuous Rigorous operating conditions.
Ÿ Available in wide operating range of 0.1 to 24 rpm & standardised sizes from 5000 Kg-M upto 60000 Kg-M
Continuous operating torque.
Ÿ These types are typically used for to Heavy Duty Agitators, Thickeners , Paddle Agitators , Dregs Mixers and
Storage Tank Agitators.

  • 5. INTRODUCTION Sedimenta on is the process of le ng suspended solids se le by gravity. This is accomplished by decreasing the velocity of the slurry/liquid being treated to nearly half the se ling rate of suspended solids in a tank. We also assist your team to establish deten on me, se ling rate/overflow rate and se ling area for the design flow necessary for sizing of the se ling tank for various process applica ons. Commonly known as gravity se lers by process engineers these are tanks where solids are se led naturally or with chemical aid and concentrated slurry is removed as underflow and clarified liquid as overflow. A mechanism is used in these gravity se lers, to scrape the se led sludge at the bo om of the tank towards the central sludge pit con nuously. The mechanism is driven by a “Drive System” mounted on the support beams or concrete pier at the top of the tank. The liquid overflows through the peripheral weir at defined loading to ensure desired velocity resul ng in proper clarifica on At INDOFAB we specialize in design of the mechanism to ensure proper sedimenta on process and efficient sludge removal with appropriate “Drive systems” to handle the torque requirement of various range of se led sludge for different applica ons. The different types of “MECHANISMS” are described below : BRIDGE MOUNTED MECHANISMS Alias A-TYPE / FIXED BRIDGE / CENTRAL DRIVEN MECHANISMS In this type of Mechanism Design a High Torque Drive / Drive Head is supported by a fixed bridge spanning the tank known as mechanism support and Central sha suspends both rake arms to sweep full tank bo om once or twice every revolu on. The load/Torque on the rake arm is defined by the process & the concentra on which in turn dictates the complete Mechanism Design. A carefully Designed Mechanism ensures the process runs flawlessly for decades together. A feed well is o en used to kill the turbulence, ensuring the sludge blanket at bo om or overflow hydraulics are not affected. Op onally Skimmers, Weirs, Baffles, Sludge Sampling systems (TSDP) are offered. Grease, free oils, organic ma er and other floatable materials are separated as it slowly spirals around and is swept into the scum trough for discharge in slumpit outside sedimenta on tank Rake arms with scrapping blades & sweeping squeezers while rota ng sweep the en re tank bo om. Each rota on of rake arms generates a spiral sweep to move se led sludge towards discharge cone at center. Different sweep profiles made for different applica ons based on Indofab’s design exper se.

PERIPHERAL DRIVEN MECHANISMS Alias ROTATING BRIDGE / TRACTION DRIVEN MECHANISMS Trac on Mechanisms are considered more economical with lower solid content the are with single rake arm suspended from rota ng bridge, & having a single Worm Gear box & Motor Driving the Peripheral Trac on wheels. The system mainly consists of a Central Turn Table of suitable ra ng with a Pivot arrangement on which rests the rota ng bridge; A carriage with two PU or Rubber Lined Wheels carries & rotates the bridge from the peripheryalong the Circularpath oftank. The Trac on Mechanisms are preferred for Large diameters with Single as well as double sweep which can be achieved by pu ng two drives or designing a centre cage + rake arms suspended from rota ng bridge.
