I. Lesson Objectives Give common examples of cleaning materials for the house and for personal care. From product labels, identify the active ingredients of cleaning products used at home.

CHEMICALS IN HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS
Silica Naturally occurring product that is made of finely ground quartz Commercial Products: Abrasive cleaners such as toothpastes, bathroom cleaners and kitchen products, Ajax, All Laundry soap Toxic Properties: Carcinogen when inspired
Toluene Derived from the tropical Colombian tree Myroxylon balsamum. Commercial Products: Solvents like paint thinners, paint, floor and furniture polish and nail enamels Toxic Properties: Causes harm to developing fetuses and used as an inhalant drug
Hydrochloric acid Produced in the human body in the gastrointestinal tract Commercial Products: Cleaning product (in the UK) and used to produce other household products like PVC plastic and leather processing Toxic Properties: Corrosive to the eyes and skin (irritant)
Lye Derived from the ashes of hard woods Commercial Products: Soaps, to cure foods such as green olives, pretzels, hominy, and drain and oven cleaners Toxic Properties: Severely damages the stomach and esophagus if ingested
CHEMICALS IN PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS
Parabens A group of chemicals used primarily for their bacteriocidal and fungicidal properties Commercial products: cosmetics such as shampoos, moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, personal lubricants, and toothpaste Toxic properties: reproductive and developmental system effects, increased risk of breast cancer
Formaldehyde An organic chemical compound; industrially produced by the catalytic oxidation of methanol Commercial products: perfumes, colognes and disinfectants Toxic properties: causes irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract
Flouride The reduced form of flourine Commercial products : use in mass destruction, Teflon (non-stick coating), city water (sodium flouride originally used to flouridate water) Toxic properties : sarin is the most toxic form of flouride-used as a weapon of mass destruction ; flouride poisoning is lethal in low doses (sodium flouride)
Hydrogen Peroxide Naturally produced as a by product of oxygen metabolism Commercial products : Diluted hydrogen peroxide (used to bleach hair, used medically to clean wounds, used by the FDA to control fungus on fish and fish eggs, when mixed properly can be used as a toothpaste and an acne treatment, used as a bleaching agent. Toxic properties : irritation to eyes, mucous membranes and skin,
Group Activity #2 (What’s Your Label?)10mins.  Bring out your assign (Product label- 1commonly used by men and 1commonly used by female). Read the information printed on the product label and your research about that product. Then in a bond paper which will be provided by the teacher, fill up the following information: Chemical Composition; Mode of Action; Precautionary Measures. Your leader will choose from the members who will explain your output.(5mins)
Individual Activity #3 (Finding Chemicals)5mins. I have to find all chemicals written horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or in backward manner then encircle it. I only have 5 minutes to do it. Alright!
Group Activity #4 (Promodizing!)15mins. Each group will be given 5 examples of consumer products. Each of the student will promote the product by explaining the good and proper way of using it. They will be given 5mins to prepare.
