Realistically:
A mature horse, around 5 years
old, will typically have between 36
and 44 teeth. This variation
depends on whether the horse has
canine teeth and the number of
premolars present.
horse dentation 1
Horses have two sets of teeth in
their lifetime, just like humans. The
first set is deciduous teeth, also
known as milk teeth or baby teeth.
These are temporary and smaller
than their permanent
counterparts.
horse dentation 2
Types of Teeth:
Horses, like most mammals, are heterodonts,
meaning they have different types of teeth for
different functions. There are three main types
of teeth in a horse's mouth:
horse dentation 3
horse dentation 4
Incisors (12): Located at the front
of the mouth, incisors are used for
nipping and grabbing grass.
horse dentation 5
horse dentation 6
Canines (0-4): These sharp teeth
are typically absent in mares but
may be present in stallions and
geldings. They are located between
the incisors and premolars.
horse dentation 7
horse dentation 8
Premolars and Molars (24-
44): These grinding teeth are
responsible for chewing food.
Premolars are located behind the
canine teeth, while molars are
found further back in the jaw. The
premolars take on the
characteristics of molars, a trait
called molariform premolars.
horse dentation 9
Number of Teeth:
A fully mature horse, around 5
years old, will have between 36
and 44 teeth. The variation
depends on whether the horse has
canine teeth.
horse dentation 10
Development of Teeth:
Horses are diphyodonts, meaning
they have two sets of teeth during
their lifetime. The first set is
deciduous teeth, also known as
milk teeth or baby teeth. These
erupt soon after birth and are
replaced by permanent teeth
between the ages of 2.5 and 5
years old.
horse dentation 11
The eruption of teeth and the wear
patterns on the incisors are
traditionally used to estimate a
horse's age. This is not an exact
science, but it can be a helpful tool
for veterinarians and horse
owners.
horse dentation 12
•Horses' teeth grow continuously
throughout their lives. This is
necessary to compensate for the
wear and tear caused by chewing.
•Horses have a diastema, which is a
gap between the incisors and
premolars. This gap allows the
horse to grip and manipulate food
with its lips and tongue.
horse dentation 13
Horse foals have a set of deciduous
teeth, also known as milk teeth or
baby teeth, that erupt soon after
birth and are replaced by
permanent teeth between the ages
of 2.5 and 5 years old. These milky
teeth are temporary and smaller
than their permanent counterparts
horse dentation 14
Regular dental care is essential for
horses' health and well-being. A
veterinarian can perform a dental
exam to check for any problems,
such as sharp points, uneven wear,
or cracked teeth. They can also
perform floating, which is a
procedure that smooths out any
rough edges on the teeth
horse dentation 15
milky teeth in horses:
•Number: Foals have a total of 24 deciduous
teeth - 12 incisors and 12 premolars.
•Eruption Timeline: The eruption of foal teeth
follows a predictable pattern often referred to as
the "rule of 8s."
• Central incisors: erupt within the first 8
days of life.
• Intermediate incisors: erupt by 8 weeks of
age.
• Corner incisors: erupt by around 8 months
of age.
• Premolars: all premolars are usually
present by the time the foal reaches 3
years old.
horse dentation 16
The permanent teeth erupt
between the ages of 2.5 and 5
years old, and a fully mature horse,
around 5 years old, will have
between 36 and 44 teeth. The
variation depends on whether the
horse has canine teeth. Here's a
breakdown of permanent teeth in
horses:
horse dentation 17
Number: A mature horse has 36-44
permanent teeth depending on the
presence of canine teeth:
•Incisors (12): Located at the front
of the mouth, incisors are used for
nipping and grabbing grass
horse dentation 18
Canines (0-4): These sharp teeth
are typically absent in mares but
may be present in stallions and
geldings. They are located between
the incisors and premolars
horse dentation 19
Premolars and Molars (24-44):
These grinding teeth are
responsible for chewing food.
Premolars are located behind the
canine teeth, while molars are
found further back in the jaw. The
premolars take on the
characteristics of molars, a trait
called molariform premolars

necessary to compensate for the

•Horses have a diastema, which is a
gap between the incisors and

horse dentation 21

horses' health and well-being. A
veterinarian can perform a dental
exam to check for any problems,
such as sharp points, uneven wear,
or cracked teeth. They can also
perform floating, which is a
procedure that smooths out any
rough edges on the teeth.
horse dentation 22
The dental formula is a way to
express the number of each type of
tooth in half of a mammal's jaw.
Since horses have symmetrical
jaws, the formula is written for one
side only and then multiplied by
two to find the total number of
teeth.
horse dentation 23
•Incisors (I): 3/3 - This means there are 3 incisors in
the upper jaw (3) and 3 incisors in the lower jaw
(3).
•Canines (C): 1/1 (or 0/0) - Horses may or may not
have canines. The formula reflects this variation: 1
upper canine (1) and 1 lower canine (1) for horses
with canines, or 0 upper canine (0) and 0 lower
canine (0) for horses without canines.
•Premolars (P): 3/3 (or 4/3) - Similar to canines,
there can be some variation in the number of
premolars. The formula shows 3 premolars in both
upper and lower jaw (3/3), or 4 premolars in the
upper jaw and 3 in the lower jaw (4/3).
•Molars (M): 3/3 - There are always 3 molars in
both the upper and lower jaw (3/3)
horse dentation 24
Putting it all together:
By following the formula and
multiplying the number of teeth on
one side by two, we can determine
the total number of teeth in a
horse:
•Total possible teeth (no canines,
3 premolars): (3 incisors + 3
premolars + 3 molars) x 2 = 24
teeth x 2 = 48 teeth
•Total possible teeth (with
canines, 4 premolars): (3 incisors +
1 canine + 4 premolars + 3 molars)
x 2 = 30 teeth x 2 = 60 teeth

  • 13. •Horses' teeth grow continuously throughout their lives. This is necessary to compensate for the wear and tear caused by chewing. •Horses have a diastema, which is a gap between the incisors and premolars. This gap allows the horse to grip and manipulate food with its lips and tongue. horse dentation 13
  • 14. Horse foals have a set of deciduous teeth, also known as milk teeth or baby teeth, that erupt soon after birth and are replaced by permanent teeth between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years old. These milky teeth are temporary and smaller than their permanent counterparts horse dentation 14
  • 15. Regular dental care is essential for horses' health and well-being. A veterinarian can perform a dental exam to check for any problems, such as sharp points, uneven wear, or cracked teeth. They can also perform floating, which is a procedure that smooths out any rough edges on the teeth horse dentation 15
  • 16. milky teeth in horses: •Number: Foals have a total of 24 deciduous teeth - 12 incisors and 12 premolars. •Eruption Timeline: The eruption of foal teeth follows a predictable pattern often referred to as the "rule of 8s." • Central incisors: erupt within the first 8 days of life. • Intermediate incisors: erupt by 8 weeks of age. • Corner incisors: erupt by around 8 months of age. • Premolars: all premolars are usually present by the time the foal reaches 3 years old. horse dentation 16
  • 17. The permanent teeth erupt between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years old, and a fully mature horse, around 5 years old, will have between 36 and 44 teeth. The variation depends on whether the horse has canine teeth. Here's a breakdown of permanent teeth in horses: horse dentation 17
  • 18. Number: A mature horse has 36-44 permanent teeth depending on the presence of canine teeth: •Incisors (12): Located at the front of the mouth, incisors are used for nipping and grabbing grass horse dentation 18
  • 19. Canines (0-4): These sharp teeth are typically absent in mares but may be present in stallions and geldings. They are located between the incisors and premolars horse dentation 19
  • 20. Premolars and Molars (24-44): These grinding teeth are responsible for chewing food. Premolars are located behind the canine teeth, while molars are found further back in the jaw. The premolars take on the characteristics of molars, a trait called molariform premolars horse dentation 20

  • 23. The dental formula is a way to express the number of each type of tooth in half of a mammal's jaw. Since horses have symmetrical jaws, the formula is written for one side only and then multiplied by two to find the total number of teeth. horse dentation 23
  • 24. •Incisors (I): 3/3 - This means there are 3 incisors in the upper jaw (3) and 3 incisors in the lower jaw (3). •Canines (C): 1/1 (or 0/0) - Horses may or may not have canines. The formula reflects this variation: 1 upper canine (1) and 1 lower canine (1) for horses with canines, or 0 upper canine (0) and 0 lower canine (0) for horses without canines. •Premolars (P): 3/3 (or 4/3) - Similar to canines, there can be some variation in the number of premolars. The formula shows 3 premolars in both upper and lower jaw (3/3), or 4 premolars in the upper jaw and 3 in the lower jaw (4/3). •Molars (M): 3/3 - There are always 3 molars in both the upper and lower jaw (3/3) horse dentation 24
  • 25. Putting it all together: By following the formula and multiplying the number of teeth on one side by two, we can determine the total number of teeth in a horse: •Total possible teeth (no canines, 3 premolars): (3 incisors + 3 premolars + 3 molars) x 2 = 24 teeth x 2 = 48 teeth •Total possible teeth (with canines, 4 premolars): (3 incisors + 1 canine + 4 premolars + 3 molars) x 2 = 30 teeth x 2 = 60 teeth horse dentation 25
