Childbith, Newborn, 8 Family Jennifer is a 26-year-old woman who gave birth three days ago to
a hoabty 9 pound-2 ounce baby girl Gina. The vaginal defvery was uneventfut. Two hours after
the birth. Jennifer began to complain of an "exaruciating headache. "Wehin ane hour of
receiving. acetaminophen for her heacache, Jennicer became unconscious and sutfered from
brespiratory arrest, She was coded, placed cn a ventilator, and sent to the ICU. A cat scan (CT -
special x -ray method to produce a number of images) revealed that she had suffered from a
massive cerebral hemomhage (stoke in her brain). The medical team determined that the darnage
to Jennifer's brain was irrevers ble (could not be reversed) and that Jennifer woild be unable to
breathe on her own. Her husband, Brett, made the decision that his wite should be removed from
life support. Brett said, "Our neighbor had Lou Gehrig's disease and Jennifer would go visit with
him and his wife. She always said she would never want to lwe like that," However. Brett was
not quite ready to have the ventlator removed. The Palliative Care team was called to visit with
Brett and Jennifer's parents. They. decided to move Jennider from the Irtensive Care Unit (HCU)
down to one of the tvo new palliative care sulte5. The ventilator would be removed there. Upon
arriving to the palliathe care sule, Brett and Jennifer's parents were introduced to Nancy, the
nurse that would be taking care of Jennifer and her family. Nancy was: sensitive in talking with
the family and had a great desire to find out what they wanted. The family agreed that the
ventilator would be removed at noon the next day. That way, family and friends would have an
opportunity to say good-bye. Throughout the rest of the day, evening. and the next morning, over
75 people came to say good-bye to Jennifer. Bretfs mother requested to stay with the new baby
in the newborn nursery. Brett was sotorn botween spending time with his new baby git and his
wile. Nancy. the family's nurse. agreed that it was a good plan to have Bretrs mather care for the
baby, while Brett concentrated on making desisions regarding Jennifer. Per Bretrs request, his
mother brought the baby to the pallative care suite two times. Jennifer's pasior came by to spend
time with Brett. He supported Brett in this very difficult decision. The horpital chaplain was also
present. Nancy suggested some memory-making rituals such as taking a clipping of Jennifer's
hair so that Gina would have that memory later on. They made focterints and handprints of
Jennifer per her parents' request. They made a hand mold of the baby's hand in her mother's
hand. Later, Jenniler's and the baby's hospital name bands would be temoved and placed in a
memory box Jennifer's mother requested to bathe her. Breat brought in Jennifer's favorite college
sweatshint to put on het. They played some of Jennifor's favorite music cds. The next day, as per
the request of the family, the pallative care team reviowed how the family would like to remowe
Jennifer's breathing tube (extubate). They tasked abcut possible symploms and how they would
treat those. Brett. Jennifer's parents, Wo brothers, and 12 other close friends were all together
with jennifer in the palliafive care suite. The nurse from the newern nursecy brought the baby
and laid her on Jenniter's abdomen, per the family's request. They sere all reminiacing and telling
Jennifer how much they loved hor and how much she had meant to all of them. The palratle
cave. nurse. physician, and chaplain were al present in the rocm and encouraged the famly to
take as much time as they needed. At 2 pm. Fe farnily reluctanily requested that they remove the
ventilator Soon, dennifer tumed cyanofic (blush in color) and began gasping for air. The team
adminstered supplemental oxygen and morphine. Jennifer continued to gasp for air and the
morphine was doubled. They repeated the mocphine one last time until Jennifer no ionger
gasped. Unfortunately, Jenniler semained cyanotic. Jennifer died 15 minutes after the breathing
tube was romoved. The paliative case team stayed with the family during the entire process. The
palliative care nurse made amangements for the funeral home to get Jennifer's body directly from
the palliative care suite. The family had requested that she not be taken to the hospital morgue.
The team temained with the family until the funeral home came: Once Jennifer's body was
removed by the funeeal home, Brett left the pall lative care suite to visit his new doughter in the
newbem nursery. "One life so precious is gone, and yot, another new life has just begun," 1.

Childbith, Newborn, 8 Family Jennifer is a 26-year-old woman who gave birth three days ago to a hoabty 9 pound-2 ounce baby girl Gina. The vaginal defvery was uneventfut. Two hours after the birth. Jennifer began to complain of an "exaruciating headache. "Wehin ane hour of receiving. acetaminophen for her heacache, Jennicer became unconscious and sutfered from brespiratory arrest, She was coded, placed cn a ventilator, and sent to the ICU. A cat scan (CT - special x -ray method to produce a number of images) revealed that she had suffered from a massive cerebral hemomhage (stoke in her brain). The medical team determined that the darnage to Jennifer's brain was irrevers ble (could not be reversed) and that Jennifer woild be unable to breathe on her own. Her husband, Brett, made the decision that his wite should be removed from life support. Brett said, "Our neighbor had Lou Gehrig's disease and Jennifer would go visit with him and his wife. She always said she would never want to lwe like that," However. Brett was not quite ready to have the ventlator removed. The Palliative Care team was called to visit with Brett and Jennifer's parents. They. decided to move Jennider from the Irtensive Care Unit (HCU) down to one of the tvo new palliative care sulte5. The ventilator would be removed there. Upon arriving to the palliathe care sule, Brett and Jennifer's parents were introduced to Nancy, the nurse that would be taking care of Jennifer and her family. Nancy was: sensitive in talking with the family and had a great desire to find out what they wanted. The family agreed that the ventilator would be removed at noon the next day. That way, family and friends would have an opportunity to say good-bye. Throughout the rest of the day, evening. and the next morning, over 75 people came to say good-bye to Jennifer. Bretfs mother requested to stay with the new baby in the newborn nursery. Brett was sotorn botween spending time with his new baby git and his wile. Nancy. the family's nurse. agreed that it was a good plan to have Bretrs mather care for the baby, while Brett concentrated on making desisions regarding Jennifer. Per Bretrs request, his mother brought the baby to the pallative care suite two times. Jennifer's pasior came by to spend time with Brett. He supported Brett in this very difficult decision. The horpital chaplain was also present. Nancy suggested some memory-making rituals such as taking a clipping of Jennifer's hair so that Gina would have that memory later on. They made focterints and handprints of Jennifer per her parents' request. They made a hand mold of the baby's hand in her mother's hand. Later, Jenniler's and the baby's hospital name bands would be temoved and placed in a memory box Jennifer's mother requested to bathe her. Breat brought in Jennifer's favorite college sweatshint to put on het. They played some of Jennifor's favorite music cds. The next day, as per the request of the family, the pallative care team reviowed how the family would like to remowe Jennifer's breathing tube (extubate). They tasked abcut possible symploms and how they would treat those. Brett. Jennifer's parents, Wo brothers, and 12 other close friends were all together with jennifer in the palliafive care suite. The nurse from the newern nursecy brought the baby
  • 2. and laid her on Jenniter's abdomen, per the family's request. They sere all reminiacing and telling Jennifer how much they loved hor and how much she had meant to all of them. The palratle cave. nurse. physician, and chaplain were al present in the rocm and encouraged the famly to take as much time as they needed. At 2 pm. Fe farnily reluctanily requested that they remove the ventilator Soon, dennifer tumed cyanofic (blush in color) and began gasping for air. The team adminstered supplemental oxygen and morphine. Jennifer continued to gasp for air and the morphine was doubled. They repeated the mocphine one last time until Jennifer no ionger gasped. Unfortunately, Jenniler semained cyanotic. Jennifer died 15 minutes after the breathing tube was romoved. The paliative case team stayed with the family during the entire process. The palliative care nurse made amangements for the funeral home to get Jennifer's body directly from the palliative care suite. The family had requested that she not be taken to the hospital morgue. The team temained with the family until the funeral home came: Once Jennifer's body was removed by the funeeal home, Brett left the pall lative care suite to visit his new doughter in the newbem nursery.
