Leprosy is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and presents as patches on the skin that may be lighter or darker in color. The bacteria can also cause thickening of nerves, commonly behind the ear, side of elbow, or back of knee. Leprosy is classified as pauci-bacillary or multi-bacillary depending on the number of skin patches present. Diagnosis involves checking sensation in affected skin patches. Treatment is through Multi Drug Therapy which involves easy to take medicines with dates marked on strips.
