Peer support helps people manage health conditions, cope with challenges, and connect with resources. It provides a personal understanding of health issues and self-management. The practice of peer support in behavioral health has grown significantly over the last 20 years, with over 10,000 peer support staff currently in the US. Peer support has been shown to reduce hospitalization and improve outcomes at a lower cost compared to traditional care. It improves symptoms, engagement, employment and quality of life. National certification for peer support specialists aims to standardize training and make peer support a reimbursable service.
