About  Games  Genres            Video  game  genres  are  given  to  define  a  game  as  it  fits  into  a   par4cular  category  or  type  due  to  its  nature,  style  of  gameplay  or   func4onality.                                                                                                                                                                                                 These  genres  serve  as  a  descriptor  of  the  general  nature  of  the   gameplay  inherent  to  a  given  4tle.                                                                                                                     However  some  games  may  also  fit  into  mul4ple  genres  as  they  will   oHen  share  common  characteris4cs  and  game  design,   incorpora4ng  elements  of  more  than  one  genre  while  other  games   fit  within  a  single  genre  will  oHen  look  quite  different  from  one   another.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         I  will  describe  and  explain  how  each  Genre  is  unique  in  its  way   compared  to  the  other  genre  and  I  will  list  various  games  released   this  year  (2012)  explaining  how  they  match  a  par4cular  genre  and   the  similari4es  with  other  genre.     George  N  Quen4n   3

Adventure  Games  Genres              Adventure  games  are  mostly  story  driven,  exploring  worlds  and   solving  puzzle,  generally  with  few  or  no  ac4on  elements  but  usually   consis4ng  cut  scene  that  allows  you  interac4ng  with  the   environment  and  characters  throughout  your  journey.  Some   usually  emulate  movies  4tles  i.e.   •  The  Testament  of  Sherlock  Holmes  –  PS3,  XBOX  360,  PC   •  The  dark  knight  rises  the  mobile  game  -­‐  iOS              However  the  main  focus  of  these  games  is  usually  based  on   characters  adventure  whereby  you  are  going  through  a  journey  to   meet  the  main  character  goal.  Some  adventure  Games  also  fit  into   mul4ple  genres  as  more  and  more  of  games  outside  the  genre  are   incorpora4ng  adventure  game  elements  these  include  games  like   •  Sleeping  Dogs  (AcEon,  Adventure)     •  Lucius  (AcEon,  Adventure,  General,  Horror)   •  Mark  of  the  Ninja  (Adventure,  PlaNormer)   George  N  Quen4n   4

Journey  –  PS3   George  N  Quen4n   5   Journey  is  a  typical  adventure  game   which  tells  the  tale  of  a  traveler   journey.  Unlike  other  games,   Journey  ignores  many  conven4onal   gaming  tradi4ons  like  scorekeeping,   lives,  and  sta4s4cs  which  makes  it   unique  in  his  way  as  its  more   emo4onal  driven  allowing  you  to   focus  more  on  the  player   adventure.       The  game  itself  intends  to  bring  to  mind  the  player  a  sense  of  smallness  and  wonder  when   discovering  the  inspiring  landscape  while  crea4ng  an  emo4onal  connec4on  between  the   players  along  the  journey.  Due  to  its  nature  it  is  targeted  to  every  one  as  it  contains  contents   that  are  suitable  for  children  and  above  as  it  s  very  casual  and  suitable  gamers  of  any  level.    
  • 6. Simula4on  Games              Simula2on  refers  to  the  genre  of  games  that  are  generally  designed  to   closely  simulate  aspects  of  a  real  or  fic4onal  reality.  These  games  aYempt  to   realis4cally  mimic  condi4ons  of  a  par4cular  environment  or  ac4vity  and  generally   fall  into  subgenres  like:   •  Flight    simula4on  –  Games  that  let  you  pilot  a  plane  or  other  aircraH.  i.e.  MicrosoO   flight  2012.  However,  it  doesn't  deal  with  aerial  combat,  which  would  be   considered  as  combat  flight  simulator  or  ac4on  game.  i.e.  Damage  Inc:  Pacific   Squadron  WWII  (WWII  Combat)   •  Real  Life  simula4on  –  Games  which  the  player  lives  or  controls  one  or  more   ar4ficial  life  forms  revolving  around  individuals  and  rela4onships.  i.e.  The  Sims  3,   •  Racing/vehicle  -­‐    Games  that  focus  on  intense  realism  of  real  life  racing  and   vehicles.  i.e.  WRC  3:  FIA  World  Rally  Championship  (FIA  World  Rally   Championship),  SBK  GeneraEons  (Superbike  World  Championship).   •  Sports  simula4on  –  Games  emula4ng  real  life  sport  with  an  aim  to  try  and  keep   things  as  realis4c,  yet  reasonably  fun  as  possible  as  the  real  life  sport.  i.e.  WWE13   (Wrestling),  NBA  2K13  (NBA)       George  N  Quen4n   6

Birds  Of  Steel  –  PS3/XBOX  360   George  N  Quen4n   7   Birds  of  Steel  is  a  combat  simulator  featuring   some  of  the  most  pivotal  air  baYles  of  World   War  II,  The  game  emulate  more  than  one   hundred  real  life  planes  with  twenty  historical   missions  and  hundreds  of  procedural  missions   over  sixteen  different  loca4ons,  including  Pearl   Harbor  and  Wake  Island.     Not  only  its  emula4ng  flying  its  also   combined  with  ac4on  and  shooters  (FPS)   as  you  get  involve  in  aerial  combats,     shoo4ng  at  enemies  planes  while  dodging   missiles,  typically    refers  to  a  Call  Of  Duty   in  the  air.  Its  rated  for  teens  or  13  year   olds  due  to  the  nature  of  the  game  as  it   contain  combat.

Sports  Games              Sports  Games  generally  emulate  tradi4onal  physical  sports  such  as  basketball,   football,  tennis,  golf  etc....                                                                                                                                                                                         Many  of  these  games  incorporated  novel  aspects  beyond  the  games  themselves   like  FIFA13  career  mode  or  Ul4mate  team.                                                                                                                                     Furthermore,  many  sports  games  include  management  elements  beyond  the   games  themselves  where  you  get  to  manage  teams  or  players  simultaneously  with   an  overall  goal  to  win  games  and  compe44ons  just  like  sport  teams  and  players   aim  to  do.  As  a  result  sports  game  provides  a  sort  of  responsibility  and  control   over  the  real  sport  game  itself  whereby  as  a  player  behind  the  scenes  you  get  the   responsibility  of  owning  a  team  of  your  choose  and  controlling  the  des4ny  of   players.  There  is  quite  a  variety  in  this  genre  for  fans  of  sports  and  it  mainly   depends  on  their  preference  or  sport  of  choice  that  determine  how  well  they  will   incorporate  a  game  of  this  genre.  Sport  games  are  mostly  targeted  at  every  one  as   they  will  less  focus  on  bad  contents  such  as  blood,  sex  or  strong  language  but   focus  more  on  the  nature  of  the  sport,  the  characteris4cs  of  players  and  teams,   the  medals  or  championships  earned,  the  game  modes  and  much  more.  Overall   this  genre  is  aimed  at  any  gamer  of  any  level  as  these  games  will  oHen  consist  a   level  of  entry  which  any  one  could  choose  to  suit  their  abili4es  i.e.  amateur,  world   class,  professional,  legendary.   George  N  Quen4n   8

London  2012  Video  game                London  2012  is  a  typical  example  of  sport  game  genre  released  in  the  build  up  of   the  Summer  2012  Olympics,  it  has  all  the  nature  and  characteris4c  of  the  London   Olympic  Games  including  the  events,  the  stadium,  the  players,  the  rules,  medals   awards  and  much  more.     George  N  Quen4n   9   The  game  fits  well  as  a  sport  genre  as  its  unlike  the  other  genres  i.e.  adventure,  music  or   shooter,  but  could  also  be  emphasized  as  a  simula4on  genre  as  its  was  developed  to   imitate  the  real  London  Olympic  games.  As  you  would  expect  is  it  targeted  at  any  one  and   especially  those  passionate  about  the  Olympic  and  events,  this  developed  for  people  to   get  hold  of  the  game  and  play  for  them  self  to  discover  the  athletes,  play  the  events  and   be  gold  medal  champion.

Racing  Games            Racing  game  genre  are  either  in  the  first-­‐person  or  third-­‐person   perspec4ve  in  which  the  player  partakes  in  a  racing  compe44on  with  at   least  two  or  more  players.    You  must  complete  a  set  of  laps  and  in  other  to   win  you  must  be  the  quickest  by  finishing  the  race  with  the  quickest  4me,   these  games  generally  allow  you  to  race  using  any  type  of  land,  air,  or   sea  vehicles.  In  general,  they  can  be  of  anything  between   hardcore  simula4ons  games  like  F1  2012  or  a  simpler  arcade,  futuris4c  or   fic44ous  racing  like  Wipeout  2048.  Racing  games    genre  are  referred  as  a   sub  genre  of  sport  game  due  to  the  fact  that  racing  is  a  sport.  However  it   is  classed  aside  of  sport  genre  to  differen4ate  the  nature  of  the  game.                The  main  primary  objec4ve  of  this  genre  is  driving  a  vehicle.  However,   they  some4mes  offer  a  secondary  mode  for  tuning  up  or  customizing  the   vehicle.     George  N  Quen4n   10

Sonic  &  All-­‐Stars  Racing  Transformed                  Sonic  &  All-­‐Stars  racing  Transformed  is  one  of  the   top  notable  racing  game  released  this  year  that   highlights  all  the  characteris4cs  of  racing  whereby  as   a  player  you're  taking  part  in  different  racing  events  ,   in  different  tracks  using  characters  from   various  Sega  franchises,  with  dis4nc4ve  vehicles,   you're  facing  intense  compe44on  to  successfully   complete  a  series  of  laps  in  races,  with  the  ability  to   collect  and  use  different  weapon  systems  to  defeat   others  for  their  posi4on  while  transforming  into  sea   and  air-­‐based  vehicles  during  a  race  with  a  goal  of   finishing  first.     George  N  Quen4n   11   These  are  the  main  characteris4cs  of  a  racing  game   that  makes  it  different  from  other  genres  like  a   sport  game  which  is  more  focused  on  management   which  your  in  control  of  a  player  or  team  des4ny   but  in  a  racing  game  like  Sonic  &  All-­‐Stars  Racing   Transformed    your  focusing  on  genng  ahead  and   elimina4ng  opponents  using  many  sort  of  weapons   systems  during  the  race  to  finish  top  spot.  
  • 12. Pla$orm(Pla$ormer)  Games              Pla$orm  games  are  very  dis4nct  in  its  genre  and  easy  to  iden4fy  as  these  games  involve  a   lot  of  traveling  between  pla$orms  by  mainly  jumping  or  some4mes  swinging  or  bouncing   between  pla$orms.  Other  tradi4onal  elements  of  these  genre  include  running  and   climbing  ladders  and  ledges.  These  genre  of  game  frequently  borrow  elements  from  other   genres  like     Ø  Ac2on  Adventure  -­‐  Rayman  Origins  (PC,  PS3,  Wii,  Xbox  360  and  Vita)     Ø  Figh2ng  -­‐  Ninja  Gaiden  3  (PS3  and  Xbox  360)   Ø  Shoo2ng  –    Mega  Man  X  (iOS)   Ø  Racing  -­‐  Joe  Danger  2:  The  Movie  (PC  PS3  and  Xbox  360)                  Although  pla$orm  games  may  have  any  theme  they  are  oHen  associated  with  iconic   cartoon  mascots  like  Donkey  Kong,  Sonic  the  Hedgehog,  Mario,  Rayman,  Mega  Man  and   more  which  in  turn  makes  these  genre  more  suitable  for  anyone  especially  targeted  at   kids.  This  is  due  to  the  fact  that  these  games  are  less  violent  and  mostly  have  lots  of  fun   factor  and  enjoyable  elements  included.  i.e.  Skylanders  Giants  (PC,  PS3,  Wii,  Xbox  360  and   3DS)  which  used  a  special  sort  of  gaming  technology  or  lets  say  real  world  magic  of   bringing  toys  to  life  including  a  set  of  characters  that  feature  spectacular  new  light   technology  integrated  into  the  toys,  allowing  the  figure  to  light  up  when  near  or  on  the   Portal  of  Power  and  revive  in  the  game.   George  N  Quen4n   12

Sonic  Adventure  2            Sonic  4tles  has  always  been  remarked  as  pla$orm  games  with  4tles  like  Sonic   the  Hedgehog,  ul4mate  Sonic,  Sonic  earth,  and  much  more.  Sonic  Adventure  2   is  the  last  Sonic  the  Hedgehog  4tle  to  be  released  for  the  Sega  pla$orm.  It   sues  3D  graphics  in  addi4on  to  scrolling  backgrounds  following  the  same  basic   principles  of  the  game  previous  series.  As  oHen  it  is  targeted  and  suitable  for   every  one  especially  young  children  (rated  E  for  Everyone),  the  game  is  less   complicated  and  fluent  throughout  the  game.   George  N  Quen4n   13  
  • 14. Shooter  (FPS  and  TPS)  Games                First  Person  and  Third  Person  Shooter  games    are  typically  shooters  games  where   loads  of  weaponry  and  shoo4ng  are  involved  usually  guns  but  what  signifies  these   genre  is  the  camera  view  of  being  in  a  first  person  or  third  person  view  of  the   character  that  the  player  controls.  The  genre  it  self  is  typically  associated  with   ac4on,  thriller,  figh4ng  and  also  vehicle  combat.  But  one  of  the  key  notable   differences  in  their  traits  is  that  FPS  tend  to  be  more  historic,  Sci-­‐Fi  and  less   modern  whereas  TPS  tend  to  be  more  tac4cal  or  turn  based  tac4cs  and  more   modern.                FPS  and  TPS  are  mainly  separate  in  their  genre  but  are  very  closely  related  as  both   genre  incorporate  the  same  characteris4c  such  as  the  shoo4ng,  the  figh4ng  or   ac4on  but  the  only  main  difference  is  the  first  person  view  and  third  person  view.   Both  genre  do  present  different  challenges  in  regard  to  the  camera  and  view  of  the     player  i.e.  in  FPS  it  would  be  more  difficult  to  no4ce  an  enemy  from  behind  as  you   would  have  to  turn  around  in  order  to  see  an  enemy  approaching  from  behind   which  you  might  not  do  in  TPS.                One  of  the  key  notable  element  of  these  genres  is  that  their  game  involve  very   disturbing  or  undesirable  elements  such  as  blood,  weapons,  violence,  hardcore   play,  strong  language  and  more,  which  is  why  the  majority  of  these  genre  is  rated   suitable  for  adults  or  18+.   George  N  Quen4n   14

Halo  4  –  Xbox  360,   First  person  Shooter,   Includes  Blood,  Violence  and   therefore  suitable  for  mild   audience  and  rated  18+       George  N  Quen4n   15   Gear  of  War  3  –  Xbox  360,   Third  Person  Shooter,     Includes  Blood  and  Gore,  Intense   Violence,  Strong  Language  and   suitable  for  mild  audience  or  18+   FPS  and  TPS  Games  
  • 16. Role  Playing  Games  (RPG)              This  genre  of  video  game  are  mostly  based  on  storytelling  and  character   development,  oHen  comprised  with  turn-­‐based  combat,  tac4cal  play,   fantasy,  wizardry  and  much  more  other  senngs.  Some  example  of  this   genre  released  this  year  are  Diablo  3,  Torchlight  II  or  Dragon's  Dogma.                These  type  of  games  mainly  allow  you  to  control  one  or  more  characters,   crea4ng  and  shaping  them  to  then  embark  on  a  series  of  encounters  that   increases  their  inventory,  wealth,  and  combat  sta4s4cs.  This  is  typical  of   this  genre    as  the  characters  grow  in  power  and  abili4es  while  the  game   progresses.              RPG  have  similar  characteris4cs  with  adventure  games  whereby  the  genre   is  story  telling,  exploring  the  world  is  key,  players  will  walk  throughout   landscape,  talking  to  non-­‐player  characters,  picking  up  objects,  and   avoiding  traps  while  also  comple4ng  quests  along  the  way.  These  games   are  mostly  in  third  person  view  containing  a  lot  of  ac4on,  oHen  figh4ng  or   either  tac4cal  shoo4ng  or  shootem-­‐up.  Most  notably,  Role  playing  is   followed  online  and  referred  as  MMORPG  i.e.  World  of  WarcraQ   George  N  Quen4n   16

The  Elder  Scrolls  V:  Dawnguard                  Dawnguard  is  an  add-­‐on  of  the  Elder  Scrolls  series  Skyrim,  the  game  is  a  very  good   example  of  RPG  telling  the  story  of  Dragonborn,  your  partaking  in  his  adventure  with   the  op4on  to  either  join  the  order  of  vampire  hunters  known  as  the  Dawnguard  and   help  defeat  the  Volkihar  vampire  lord  Harkon  or  join  forces  with  the  Volkihar  vampires.                Your  able  to  create  your  character  before  emerging  into  game  play,  having  to  complete   over  10  quests,  explore  over  20  loca4ons  and  able  to  perform  magic  rituals  as  a   vampire  and  change  into  different  form  of  vampirism  to  combat  many  creatures  i.e.   dragons,  giants  and  hunters.     George  N  Quen4n   17   Similarly  with  most  games  of  this   genre,  it  is  rated  mild  meaning  its   suitable  to  17  years  olds  and  over,  the   target  audience  in  this  age  group  would   mainly  be  to  those  that  mostly  love   fantasy,  historic  ,  wizardry  and  ancient   worlds,  love  story  telling    aspect  and   adventure  and  also  enjoy  the  crea4on   or  customiza4on  elements.

MMOG                                                                                       Massively  Mul4player  Online  Games                MMOG  are  games  that  are  intended  to  be  played  by  large  numbers  of  people  simultaneously   usually  on  a  client-­‐server  model.  As  internet  connec4ons  prove  to  be  more  popular  in   peoples  homes  with  the  speed  of  internet  connec4on  increasing  its  allowing    playing  games   over  the  internet  more  convenient  than  ever  before.  The  main  aspect  of  MMOG  is  that  the   online  element  in  these  games  does  not  typically  have  an  end,  and  cannot  be  'won'  or  'lost‘   but  instead  enable  players  to  cooperate  and  compete  with  each  other  on  a  large  scale.                                                                       These  games  include  a  variety  of  gameplay  types,  represen4ng  many  video  game  genres   most  notably  RPG  known  as  MMORPGs  (Massively  Mul4player  Online  Role-­‐Playing  Game)   such  as  World  of  WarcraQ:  Mists  of  Pandaria,  though  there  are  also:                  First-­‐person  shooter  known  as  MMO  FPS  (Massively  Mul4player  Online  First  Person   Shooter)  games  such  as  Call  of  Duty:  Black  Ops  II                                                                                                                                                             Third  Person  Shooter  like  Gears  of  War  3,  Spec  Ops:  The  Line                  Sport  like  FiFA  13,  NBA  2K13                  Racing  like  Need  for  Speed:  Most  Wanted,  Sonic  &  All-­‐Stars  Racing  Transformed                  Figh2ng  like  PlayStaYon  All-­‐Stars  BaZle  Royale,  Street  Fighter  X  Tekken                  and  much  more  other  genres.  To  best  describe,  MMOG  is  just  the  mul4player  online   element  added  to  a  variety  of  games  no  maYer  the  genre  to  add  an  extra  bit  to  the  game   created  as  well  as  usability  and  longevity  of  the  game.     George  N  Quen4n   18

Call  of  Duty:  Black  Ops  II                Call  of  Duty  franchise  is  by  far  the  most  popular  and  highest  selling  game  of  all  4me,  mostly   thanks  to  its  online  playing  ability.  Call  of  Duty  mul4player  is  the  lifeblood  of  the  Call  Of  Duty   franchise,  played  365  days  a  year,  twenty-­‐four  seven,  all  over  the  world.  The  latest  release   black  ops  II  featured  many  different  changes  and  addi4on  on  online  element  and  gameplay.   Since  it  launch  in  November  13  its  aYracted  over  400000  players  online  on  ps3  daily,  adding   together  all  the  other  consoles  would  drama4cally  mul4ply  these  figures  to  millions.       George  N  Quen4n   19   In  addi4ons  the  dedicated  servers  used  to   support  the  thousands  of  players  online   were  even  struggling  to  cope  with  the   amount  of  users  which  some  users  were   unable  to  play  online.  This    is  just  one   problems  and  drawbacks  that  can  occur   with  MMOG  and  this  just  shows  the   popularity  of  this  genre,  having  people   connected  with  each  other.  Call  Of  Duty   brings  the  best  mul4player  game  play   experience  unlike  any  other  FPS  out  there   which  is  mainly  why  it  has  so  much   success.

Music                      Music  Games  are  mostly  based  around  music,  they  are  type  of  games  that   commonly  challenge  a  player  to  follow  sequences  of  movement  or  develop   specific  rhythms.  Mostly  involve  the  player  recrea4ng  a  music  piece,  dancing  or   singing,  using  special  peripherals    and  accessories  designed  for  these  type  of   games.                This  is  basically  what  these  games  involve,  requiring  the  player  to  input  rhythms   by  stepping  with  their  feet  on  a  dance  pad  or  dancing  mat,  or  using  devices  similar   to  a  specific  musical  instrument  like  a  replica  drum  set  or  a  guitar  simulator  such   as  the  one  used  in  Guitar  Hero  World  Tour.  Most  notably  and  recently  use  for   these  games  are  mo4on  sensing  input  devices  like  Wii,  kinect  for  Xbox  360  and  the   PlaySta4on  Move  typically  used  for  dancing,  allowing  users  to  control  and  interact   with  console  without  the  need  to  touch  a  game  controller  making  the  gaming   experience  more  ac4ve  and  sociable  whereby  the  device  monitors  the  player   movement,  the  player  has  to  replicate  a  set  of  dances  shown  on  screen  by  the   game  and  judge  by  how  the  player  is  able  to  replicate  those  movement  as  its   shown.  A  typically  example  of  these  genre  of  music  games  is  Sing  Star  which   achieved  huge  popularity  among  casual  gamers.     George  N  Quen4n   20

Dance  Central  3  –  Xbox  360      Dancing  central  3  follows  dance  moves  which   are  tracked  by  the  Xbox  Kinect.  The  more   accurately  the  players  dance,  the  more  points   they  earn.  The  harder  the  difficulty  the  harder   moves  for  the  players  to  follow.  the  game   allows  you  to  create  your  own  moves   alongside  with  the  hoYest  moves  from  today   implemented  in  the  game,  with  more  than  40   songs  to  dance  from  you  also  have  the  ability   to  import  your  own  song,  get  involve  in   dancing  baYles  and  much  more.     George  N  Quen4n   21   These  are  just  some  element  of  this  game  that  signifies  why  it’s  a  music  genre,  as  you  replica4ng   dancing  move  your  also  learning  from  them  and  as  you  listening  to  more  and  more  songs  you   familiarizing  with  them  knowing  the  rhyme  and  rhythms  that  follows.  All  allowing  it  to  be  more   ac4ve  by  singing  or  dancing  which  is  one  of  key  characteris4cs  of  music  genres.  These  games  are   mainly  targeted  at  any  gamer,  especially  those  who  love  Music  (HipHop/R&B)  and  dancing,  even   if  you  don’t  know  how  to  do  both  there  is  a  beginner  mode  that  allows  you  to  do  both  and  even   help  you  learn  dancing  moves.
