5 Safety Hazards in Spinning Industry
and Ways to Prevent Them
Introduction
● Spinning is the process of transforming fibers into yarns.
● There are multiple stages in the spinning process, and problems in any stage can affect
output quality and productivity.
● All mill-operators should have a clear understanding of the different stages of spinning.
● The reliability and usability of spinning can and related products also have a direct effect
on operational efficiency.
1. Bale Opening, Blending and Unicleaning
● The spinning process starts with opening the bales of cotton. The cotton is then
blended to minimize variations and inconsistencies in the yarn.
● High-quality compressed air is used to mix the fibers evenly.
● Maintaining homogeneity is important throughout the spinning process.
● Cotton bales contain dirt, seeds, sand, and other contaminants. The cotton fibers are
compressed into sheets to remove these contaminants. This process is called
unicleaning.
● The resulting product is called a lap, which is further processed to remove any
remaining contaminants.
2. Blowroom
● The blowroom is the initial stage of the core spinning process.
● It uses opposing spikes, air current, and beaters to remove impurities from the cotton
fibers.
● The material is opened and tufts are formed, followed by thorough cleaning and
blending.
● The flocks (or laps) that are formed have proper width and height uniformity.
● In the blowroom, various transmission machine parts like shafts, belts, gears, and
pulleys can experience issues that lead to mechanical failure or reduced performance.
3. Carding Stage
● The carding machinery disentangles and intermixes the fibers.
● A thin fiber sheet is formed, with the fibers placed parallel to each other.
● Impurities and neps are removed.
● The lap is converted into sliver, and the fibers become untwisted and smooth.
4. Drawframing
● The sliver from the carding stage is uneven and not suitable for yarn production.
● The drawframing stage uses doubling and drafting machinery to create single strands
from multiple strands.
● Drafting is done to attenuate the fibers.
● Unevenness is minimized through equalizing.
● Parallelizing is done to set yarn strength parameters.
● Variations in the raw material are made up for by blending.
● Removal of external dust particles also happens during the draw framing stage
5. Combing
● Combing is a phase in yarn spinning where sliver is formed.
● Impurities and short fibers are removed from the comber lap.
● Several key actions are involved in the combing process, including lap feeding &
nipping, roller detaching, piecing, and cylinder comb cleaning.
● A large percentage of fiber neps are removed during combing.
● The fibers are straightened and the sliver evenness is maximized.
6. Roving and Ring-Frame
● The roving frame is used to feed the drawn slivers and add a proper twist to them.
● The spinning can products collect the roving strands and transfer them to the
spinning machinery.
● The roller speed is gradually increased to minimize the linear fiber density and bring
down the overall sliver size.
● The speed frame performs three main functions: drafting, twisting, and winding.
● The ring frame enhances the fineness of the fiber by drafting the roving and forming
yarns of the requisite count and strength levels.
7. Spinning and Winding
● Yarn strengthening is done in the spinning stage by adding twist.
● Ring bobbin winding is done after yarn strengthening.
● The package size should be relatively large for better productivity and efficiency.
● Splicing and/or cutting is done to remove yarn imperfections.
● Advanced autoconers have automated splicing/cutting tools.
The Final Word
● The choice of spinning can is very important in yarn spinning processes.
● The cans must be compatible with the installed spinning machinery.
● Each of the spinning stages must be carried out with care and precision.
● This will ensure that the final yarn quality is high.
“Spinning is the process of transforming fibers into yarns. It has
multiple stages and problems in any stage can hamper output
quality and productivity. All stakeholders in the textile industry
should know the different stages of spinning.”
