LEARNING COMPETENCIES
At the end of this learning module the student will be able to:
○ Identify the flash tools for viewing.
○ adjust document properties
○ Work with text inside the flash animation software.
VIEW TOOLS
While working in Flash, you may need the view tools on the toolbar that will
allow you to quickly move on the stage.
Hand Tool Zoom Tool
TIP
To zoom out, hold down the
ALT key then click.
Drags the stage to view another
part of your document
Zooms in or out to view more or
less of the stage.
GLOBAL WARMING PROJECT
Now we are going to completethe global warming multimedia project.
You will need to enhance your Earth drawing from the previous exercise. The
effect that you are trying to achieve is the one shown.
The next drawing will be the hat. You can draw
the hat by using several tools like the merged oval, and
just drag the nodes or the pencil. For this exercise, you
will use the Pen Tool. This tool will allow you to have
greater control over creating lines. The next exercise will
show you how the pen tool works.
EXERCISE: Pen Tool Practice
1. Open a new Flash document.
2. Select the Pen Tool. This tool will create lines by creating anchor points for
your lines.
For your first pen practice, you will first create straight
lines to make up a triangle.
EXERCISE : Pen Tool Practice
3. Click at the bottom left then at the top, and then at the bottom right. To
join the points to make up the triangle, click the bottom left point again.
Your pen mouse pointer will display a small circle beside
it, which will indicate that the nodes have been locked
together.
This will close the gap between the lines.
Then you can select the delete anchor point tool to
delete the center starting point of our triangle.
EXERCISE : Pen Tool Practice
4. Close the document without saving.
Now, try drawing Bezier curves. Bezier (Pronounced as bez-ee-ay), are
curved lines defined by mathematical formulas that employ at least three
points to define a curve.
It was named after Pierre Bezier. He was a French engineer known for the Bezier
curve and Bezier surface.
A curve has two endpoints,
which are called anchor points.
The other points are called
handles, tangent points, or
nodes. In each handle are two
Control Points. You can modify
the shape of the curve by
moving the control points.

ACTIVITY : PEN TOOL
1. Open a new Flash document.
2. Select the Pen Tool. Click and drag on the Stage twice to a different location, and the
double click to end the drawing. Notice how the curves are being made by the pen.
3. Erase the drawing by pressing the delete key.
4. Try using the pen to create a circle. It doesn’t need to be a perfect circle. Just doodle
using the pen tool. Make sure that you close the gap by joining the first and last nodes.
5. Save your work as ACTIVITY 2 – PEN TOOL
Do not worry if you are having a
hard time. Using the pen tool needs a
lot of practice.
The success with drawing curves
depends on the ability to control the
handles. The further away from the
anchor point we drag, the longer the
direction handles will be. The longer
the handle, the longer the curve will be.
ACTIVITY : USINGPEN TOOL TO DRAWTHEHAT
1. Open GlobalWarming_Intro.fla.
You will use the Pen Tool to trace a graphic. The first thing that you need to do is to
put the graphic on the Stage.
2. In the dialog box, locate the Flash Practice Files folder. Download the “Earth Fever.jpg”
in our website or edmodo page.
3. Then browse for it by clicking File > Import > Import to Stage
ACTIVITY : USINGPEN TOOL TO DRAWTHEHAT
4. The image should now be in your Stage. Click the Pen Tool and use it to trace the hat.
Make sure that the drawing is not merged.
5. Add a red fill color to the hat.
6. Click the image on the stage, and the press Delete.
7. Save the Flash Document named ACTIVITY: HAT.
ACTIVITY : WORKING WITH TEXT
There are two formats that you can use to add text in Flash: Text Layout Framework
(TLF) and Classic Text.
The TLF Text, which requires ActionScript 3.0 and Flash 10 or higher, provides the
following enhancements:
• Option to adjust the leading and tracking.
• Allows creation of right-to-left text.
• Allows text overflow across multiple containers.
• More control over the text layout.
There are three types of Classic Text: Static, Dynamic and Input. Here are their uses:
• Use Static Text when the text will not change, such as button and form
labels.
• Use Dynamic Text for text that will change as the movie plays, usually set in
the ActionScript program.
• Use Input text for requesting input from the viewer, such as username and
password.
ACTIVITY : WORKING WITH TEXT
1. Open GlobalWarming_Intro.fla.
2. In the tools panel, select the Text Tool.
3. Select Classic Text from the Properties Panel.
4. Type the following text below the globe artwork:
“The temperature is rising.
The earth has fever.”
5. After typing, click the Selection tool to select all
the text
ACTIVITY : WORKING WITH TEXT
6. In the properties panel, apply basic character formatting according to your preference.
a. In the character section, choose a different font family in the font family menu.
b. Choose a different font style, such as Italic or Bold.
c. Set a different font size appropriate for your artwork.
d. Choose a different font color by clicking the color box.
e. In the Paragraph section, choose the centered alignment for your text.
7. Save your flash document.
ACTIVITY : WORKING WITH TEXT
Merge Drawing – blends shapes when they overlap on the stage.
Object Drawing – Treats your shapes as grouped objects that can overlap without affecting
each other.
Bezier – (Prounounced as bez-ee-ay) are curved lines defined by mathematical formulas
that employ at least three points to define a curve.
In this lesson, you were able to differentiate from an object drawing from an object
drawing. You can draw different shapes from the rectangle tool and modify them by using
the subselection tool to drag the nodes. The pen tool is useful to trace objects on your
stage. Adding text is easy by using the Text tool and adjusting its properties.
