        1. Short description of the technology

        The AWE electrical energy storage system based on battery energy storage technology,
        is including state of art superior batteries, so-called lithium yttrium - rare earth metal - based
        batteries.
        The energy from the battery blocks is loaded to the network (and stored from the network) through
        a specially developed two-way, high-capacity (2 x 250 kW, 3-phase, 0.4 kV voltage) inverter and
        transformator. The storage units can be operated and managed remotely via the AWE BSVPP (BSVPP
        – Battery Strenghten Virtual Power Plant) monitoring- and process control system. Operating and
        managing is a geographically independent procedure.
        The equipment is going to be placed in a 40’ foot high sea container. The container includes all the
        major equipment, the control system and the cooling technology, which is capable to maintain the
        required temperature. The cooling technology is also operated by the control unit.
        Because it’s standard size and design, the plant is easily mobile but it also can be adapted for
        stationary installation. Instead of mounting in the container, the placement inbuilt environment
        (buildings, halls, install to underground) can also be arranged.

               2. Main applying scopes of the equipment
        I.       energy storage for ancillary service purpose (secondary, tertiary service)
        II.      interference filtering on medium and high voltage system level (filtering the
                 interferences which could impair and ruin the electronic interference sensitive, high
                 value equipments, and the possible processed products underway
        III.     UPS function (maintaining the uninterrupted power in the case of electrical outage;
                 the costumer devices are not damaging behind the energy storage, taking into the
                 consideration the millisecundum - level switching time
        IV.      the idle power absorbing function associated to all function listed above
        V.       mobile energy storage function with appropriate shaping – at disaster situation;
                 providing additional energy at certain places (exhibitions, sport games, geological
                 research areas, etc.)
        VI.      besides to PV parks, ensuring power during the night time to keep the system
                 connection with surrounding network(s)




               3. Comparison with present technologies
        Li-ion batteries – a leading edge technology

        AWE decided to choose Li-ion based technologies when examined the modern solutions of
        electro-chemical storage possibilities. This specific storage system compared with other
        competing technologies gave the best advantages/disadvantages indicator combination.
