Evaluation Question 1

    OLIVIA CALLEJA
CANDIDATE NUMBER- 6040
1) In what ways does you media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions or real media products?
My media product uses and also challenges conventions of a thriller product. It uses
them by the suspense created using a variety of different shots and angles and also
very slow, one take shots then building up later with the fast paced cutting and editing.
I have also tried to use typical thriller music in my teaser trailer incorporated with
some diegetic sounds such as running, deep breaths and very little dialogue at all. I
have used a voice over, It doesn’t state whose voice it is so this will be up to the
audience to decide giving them a slight enigma which is very common of thrillers. The
narrative is also typical of a thriller film. I have focused on the subgenres of thrillers-
spy. I feel as though it is quite difficult to define a thriller product, thrillers also tend to
incorporate a lot of ‘horror’ elements mixed in with mystery and when it comes to the
actual film- tension, normally without the gore and a more in depth story line.
Film trailers are purely for promotional purposes, they tend to show the audience
most of the ‘best bits’ of a film, but also trying not to give too much of the story away
so that the audience will still be intrigued and want to watch it.
As we only had to create a trailer and not the whole film it was very difficult to try and
create a successful trailer without working out where you were heading to, so I
planned out the majority of my film- ‘Bellatrix’, and pinpointed key moments to
exaggerate in my trailer which is very common for directors to do with trailers.
For my ancillary tasks, I have tried to stick to the conventions of a magazine
cover and film poster this is because to challenge them would be very
difficult and in my opinion unsuccessful as no matter what the genre of
ancillary tasks they all follow the same styles and they sell very well
because these conventions are successful. I looked at a variety of different
film posters for thrillers and most featured a face of the protagonist for
example with ‘Hanna’ and ‘Salt’. I also took inspiration from the very high
grossing film ‘Avatar’ this although not being a film of the same genre as
mine was a massive hit with the mainstream audiences so I thought I
should take some inspiration from there too, what I took from the ‘Avatar’
poster is the half face of one of the characters this I feel allows the
audience to recognize a character but also be slightly mystified. I also took
an element from ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’, this also is not of the
thriller genre but is also a very high grossing film. I took the image of the
protagonist holding weapons close to the face, this to me shows how the
protagonists rely on weapons and are closer to their weapons than they
are to other people. This is something I felt needed to be shown through
   my film poster.

I think that with using this programme, I really
got a feel for professional work and how
complicated it really is, but how the final
   product is worth it.
