Ethics in Technology Handout Nebraska Library Commission Presenter: Amanda Sweet
WHAT ARE ETHICS?
Ethics has many different approaches and nuances. Basically, it is how people make decisions
and decide between right and wrong. Ethics can apply to individuals, communities, countries,
organizations, technology, and much more. Many organizations write their own code of ethics.

TECHNOLOGY INFLUENCES OUR IDENTITIES
Technology is everywhere. It’s not surprising that it shapes us as individuals and as a society.
The internet expanded our reach and definition of “community”. Social media changed the way
we interact with others. Many of us now have an “online” and a “real life identity”.

TECHNOLOGY INFLUENCES SOCIETY
Access to technology can make or break an economic system, worldwide. Machines are
learning the best and worst behavior from humans and our large-scale societal racial, gender,
and other biases are about to come to light in machine learning algorithms. However, machine
learning and other emerging tech can be used for great good as well. Food for thought.

WHAT IS BIG DATA?
Big Data is everywhere. Data is collected by sensors connected via the Internet of Things, social
media platforms, input forms online, search engines, and various other sources. These data sets
are enormous. Giant. Data from a single source can be greatly varied in content or type. This
data can also be analyzed and used in a variety of different ways.
Ethics Questions:
1. How should this data be collected? Is there a type of data, or an application for the data
analysis that should not be allowed for the greater good of humanity?
2. Who should be allowed to collect and store this data?
3. Can the company collecting the data be trusted to write its own code of ethics?
4. What is the role of the consumer to stay informed? The users of social media and search
engines agreed to the data collection, but the application of the data analysis changed
over time. Is this on the consumer? Or the company?
5. How is this data regulated? How can the public be heard?

WHAT IS USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN?
“User experience (UX) design is the process of creating products that provide meaningful and
relevant experiences to users. This involves the design of the entire process of acquiring and
integrating the product, including aspects of branding, design, usability, and function”
(Interaction Design Found., https://www.interaction-design.org/literature/topics/ux-design).
These people control what the user sees and how they react to a product. Sometimes they are
one-time consultants. They cannot always control whether a company lives up to the branding
set by the UX Design.
Ethics Questions:
1. Who determines adherence?
2. Where is the line between online identity and real identity for companies?
3. Is the UX Designer at fault when a company does something unethical?
4. What is Machine Learning?
Ethics in Technology Handout Nebraska Library Commission Presenter: Amanda Sweet
WHAT IS MACHINE LEARNING?
“Machine learning is a method of data analysis that automates analytical model building. It is a
branch of artificial intelligence based on the idea that systems can learn from data, identify
patterns and make decisions with minimal human intervention” (SAS,
https://www.sas.com/en_us/insights/analytics/machine-learning.html).
Ethics Questions”
1. What type of problem can really be solved by machine learning?
2. What should remain a purely human judgement?
3. Just because it can be automated, should it be?
4. Which problems stem from issues that can be purely quantified?
5. Do we know what happens long-term when programs write themselves?

LINKS USED IN PRESENTATION
Is it ethical to collect and use information obtained from social media followers? Users like to
have free access to social media accounts, and many don’t mind getting targeted ads to
maintain a free site. But how invasive is too invasive with privacy? Social media platforms may
need to collect data to improve their services, but what kinds of experiments should they run
on users to learn more about their own product? Do users know what we’re signing?
