Vocabulary Let’s learn how to describe people (and animals)
Affectionate /əˈfɛkʃ(ə)nət/ - readily feeling or showing fondness or tenderness.
Example They’re a really affectionate couple. They’re always hugging and kissing in public, which makes their friends uncomfortable.
aggressive /əˈɡrɛsɪv/ ready or likely to attack or confront; characterized by or resulting from aggression
Example He’s a really aggressive guy. I don’t know why his girlfriend puts up with him. I can’t stand it when people are aggressive like that.
ambitious /amˈbɪʃəs/ having or showing a strong desire and determination to succeed
Example He’s so ambitious. I think it’s because he’s young. I wish I still had that sort of energy. But ambition often fades with age.
anxious /ˈaŋ(k)ʃəs/ feeling or showing worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome
Example She’s so anxious. She worries about everything. It drives all her friends crazy. I wish should could just calm down and relax.
bossy /ˈbɒsi/ fond of giving people orders; domineering
Example That little girl is so bossy. She’s always telling her friends what to do. One day she’ll go too far and have no friends left.
charismatic karɪzˈmatɪk/ exercising a compelling charm which inspires devotion in others
Example Barack Obama was popular because he was a really charismatic politician. People are always attracted to charismatic leaders.
courageous /kəˈreɪdʒəs/ similar to “brave”
Example I think astronauts are really courageous. The work they do is so dangerous, and they do it for all of humanity.
devious /ˈdiːvɪəs/ showing a skillful use of underhand tactics to achieve goals (negative)
Example He’s such a devious person. You just can’t trust him at all.
generous ˈdʒɛn(ə)rəs/ showing a readiness to give more of something, especially money, than is strictly necessary or expected
Example My sister is so generous. She gives lots of money to charity every month, but never tells anyone. If everyone were that generous, the world would be a wonderful place.
moody /ˈmuːdi/ given to unpredictable changes of mood
Example My cat is so moody. She’s always angry at me about something, and I never know why. I suppose cats are often just like that.
vain /veɪn/ having or showing an excessively high opinion of one's appearance
Example People are becoming so vain these days. Everyone takes selfies now and posts them on their social media. It didn’t used to be that way.
