Martin Nowak studied biochemistry and mathematics at the University of Vienna, and earned his Ph. D. in 1989, working with Peter Schuster on quasi-species theory and with Karl Sigmund on evolution of cooperation. Nowak suggests that evolution is constructive because of cooperation, and that we might add “natural cooperation” as a third fundamental principle of evolution beside mutation and natural selection.

Beyond The Survival of the Fittest: Why Cooperation, not Competition, is the Key to Life If life is about survival of the fittest, then why would we risk our own life to jump into a river to save a stranger? Some people argue that issues such as charity, fairness, forgiveness and cooperation are evolutionary loose ends, side issues that are of little consequence. But as Harvard's celebrated evolutionary biologist Martin Nowak explains in this groundbreaking and controversial book, cooperation is central to the four-billion-year-old puzzle of life. Indeed, it is cooperation not competition that is the defining human trait.

Article published in 1989 in Portugal with the concept of a space program fully based on ocean settlements. Ocean colonies as the first step for outer space colonization was originally presented in 1988 in Houston under the title "Expanding the concept of Space Program" that addressed the need for the creation of a new "industrial ecosystem" that would enable human expansion out of earth.

The STS-107 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia will perform over 80 experiments over the course of 16 days in microgravity. Experiments will include studies of combustion and fire suppression that could improve engineering and safety. Life sciences experiments will examine the effects of microgravity on cells, DNA, and bone growth/loss to increase understanding of diseases like cancer and osteoporosis. Astronauts will also participate in studies measuring the impacts of microgravity on their bodies, such as changes in calcium, muscle, and sleep, to develop countermeasures for long-duration spaceflight. Students from several countries will also conduct experiments involving various organisms.
The Commercial ITA Biomedical eXperiments (CIBX-2) payload aimed to grow high quality protein crystals of the enzyme urokinase aboard the STS-107 mission to determine its molecular structure. This could enable developing drugs to inhibit cancer metastasis. Eleven experiments were conducted, including attempting to grow larger, purer urokinase crystals than on previous missions using 99% pure protein. While hardware from the experiment was recovered, the samples had degraded due to the months before recovery and lack of temperature control after the shuttle breakup, providing only partial data for secondary experiments but no usable crystals of urokinase.
