LESSON 2: ENRICHINGYOUR MIND
AND BODY: PROMOTING
PHYSIOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT
AND WELL-BEING
3.
LESSON OBJECTIVES
At theend of the lesson, the students shall be able to:
• analyze the importance of integrating balanced routines
(e.g., sleep, nutrition, exercise, hygiene) in daily life for
optimal development;
• demonstrate valuing of consistent routines that promote
health and well-being through personal commitment and
positive attitudes; and
• develop a personal routine plan that integrates habits
promoting health and self-care.
Read each scenarioand decide
whether the person’s routine
supports physiological development
and well-being. Then reflect on what
couldbeimproved.
9.
SCENARIO 1: FITNESSACTIVITY
Jake spends eight (8) hours sitting in
front of her computer for classes and
games. She jogs for 10 minutes once a
week. Does Edith’s routine support
physiological development? Why or
why not?
10.
SCENARIO 2: MINDFULNESSACTIVITY
Jude feels stressed during examination
periods. Every night, he practices deep
breathing for five (5) minutes before
sleeping. Does Lloyd’s practice support
his well-being? How?
PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES
Thisrefers to any bodily movement that
enhances or maintains health and physical
strength. These may include structured
exercises like workouts and sports, as well
as informal forms of movement, such as
brisk walking or biking.
1.IMPROVESPHYSICALHEALTH
Consistent exercise strengthensbody
systems, promotes healthy blood
circulation, and lowers health risks.
Adolescents who engage in regular
activities are less likely to develop
chronic diseases later in life.
15.
2.ENHANCESBRAINFUNCTIONAND
ACADEMICPERFORMANCE
Physical activity andexercise increase
blood flow to the brain and stimulate
the growth of new neurons. Adolescents
who are physically active demonstrate
stronger executive functions, including
attention, memory, and self-regulation.
16.
3.SUPPORTSSTRESSMANAGEMENT
Engaging in activitiessuch as
running, aerobics, or dancing can
serve as healthy strategies for
managing stress, frustration, or
anxiety. Exercise reduces tension
and provides mental clarity.
17.
4.PROMOTESMENTALHEALTHAND
POSITIVEMOOD
Physical activity actsas a natural mood
enhancer. When individuals are active,
the brain releases neurotransmitters such
as dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin,
which are associated with well-being
and relaxation.
18.
5. BUILDS LIFESKILLS
Engaging in fitness activities, particularly
team sports, fosters valuable interpersonal
and intrapersonal skills. Adolescents
develop teamwork, communication, and
resilience through collaboration, strategic
planning, and mutual encouragement.
19.
MINDFULNESS ACTIVITIES
Mindfulness activitiescultivate
mental awareness. Mindfulness
refers to a set of practices that help
individuals focus attention on the
present moment in a calm and
nonjudgmental manner.
20.
WHATISMINDFULNESSMEDITATION?
Mindfulness meditation is"paying
attention in a particular way: on purpose,
in the present moment, and
nonjudgmentally." In practice, mindfulness
meditation often begins with focusing on
a steady, present-moment experience—
most commonly the natural rhythm of
breathing.
MINDFULNESS EXERCISES
6. Mindfulnessand compassion
Another mindfulness practice is loving-
kindness meditation, which extends
mindfulness by directing positive
intentions toward oneself and others. A
person may silently repeat phrases such
as, “May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I
be safe. May I live with ease,” and then
extend these wishes to others.
Mindfulness helps adolescentsreduce stress,
anxiety, and other emotional difficulties. Regular
practice improves emotional regulation, allowing
them to manage their feelings more effectively. It
also enhances focus, concentration, and
academic performance. With consistent practice,
mindfulness becomes a habit that strengthens
resilience to stress. Even spending 5–10 minutes
a day on mindfulness can support mental well-
being and learning, making it a valuable activity
that schools can incorporate into their programs.
In addition tostructured exercise and mindfulness
practices, there is a wide variety of physical
activities that contribute to health, personal
growth, and well-being. Engaging in sports and
recreation is not solely about physical health; it also
provides opportunities to develop teamwork,
leadership, discipline, and social connection.
35.
PARTICIPATING IN SPORTS
Bothcompetitive and
informal sports serve as
valuable avenues for
adolescent development.
Competitive sports may
involve teams, leagues, and
tournaments, while informal
sports include neighborhood
basketball games or weekend
soccer matches with friends.
36.
RECREATIONAL PHYSICAL
ACTIVITIES
Not alladolescents are drawn to
competitive sports, and that is
perfectly valid. Recreational physical
activities offer similar benefits, often
in a more relaxed or individual way.
37.
RECREATIONAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
1.Dance- Dancing is a
fun physical activity that
integrates artistic
expressionwithexercise.
Itenhancescoordination
and rhythm while also
providing an effective
cardiovascularworkout.

WEEKLY RECREATION PLAN
Thisweekly recreation plan is designed to help you
strengthen your body, mind, and well-being by
balancing fitness, mindfulness, recreation, and
reflection. You have learned how daily fitness,
mindfulness, recreation, and reflection activities
contribute to your well-being. Now it is time to
apply this knowledge by designing a weekly
recreation plan based on what you learned.
Look at your weekly schedule (school days,
weekends, extracurriculars, family
responsibilities).
43.
WEEKLY RECREATION PLAN
Decideon realistic times for the following activities:
Fitness Activities (e.g., sports, exercise, brisk walking,
dance)
Mindfulness Practices (e.g., breathing, body scan,
meditation)
Recreational Activities (e.g., games, outdoor activities,
creative hobbies)
Mind-Body Balance (e.g., yoga, stretching with breathing,
mindful walk)
Reflection/Journal Writing
Distribute these activities across the week so that each day
includes at least one physical activity and one mindfulness
or reflection practice.
INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION
Reflect andwrite short answers on the following
prompts.
1. Why is it important to take responsibility for your own
health and well-being through fitness and mindfulness?
2. Traditional Filipino games (patintero, tumbang preso,
sipa) and dances (tinikling, karatsa) are both fun and
meaningful. What values do these cultural activities
promote (e.g., cooperation, resilience, community
spirit)?
3. In sports and fitness, why is fair play an important
value? How does cheating, dishonesty, or lack of respect
affect not just the game but also the players involved?
Take a momentto reflect on your habits, experiences, and
personal growth. Use the questions below to evaluate
your progress, set learning goals, and think about how
fitness, mindfulness, and recreational activities influence
your daily life. Place a check mark (✓) in the box if the
statement applies to you.
