English Test for Aviation Professionals
(ETAP)

What is ETAP?
ETAP is a specialised exam designed exclusively for members of the Aviation profession.
The exam is based on the standard ICAO Phraseology which consists of Aviation English. This exam also includes aspects of General English. By focussing
on both Aviation English and General English, the results of the ETAP exam provides an insight into the full English proficiency of each participant and
highlights which areas of English the participant needs assistance with.
The scoring of the ETAP exam also allows participants, recruitment agencies and employers to gain an understanding and knowledge of the English proficiency
of the person doing the exam. Each participant completing the exam will receive a graded report outlining their strengths and weaknesses and plus, if
required, the training manager, recruitment manager or HR representative of the participant also receives the same report. This means that the ETAP exam
can be used to measure or gauge the English proficiency for large groups - which is perfect for recruitment campaigns and/or student intakes.
Who is ETAP designed for?
ETAP is designed for Aviation professionals and/or organisations that need to have an understanding on the English ability for a specific
individual or for a group of employees or new recruits.
If the results show that further training is required - either to maintain operational proficiency or to improve in specific areas, then the
individuals and/or their sponsors are able to identify and select a suitable training program based on the testing results.
Overview of the ETAP exam
The ETAP exam consists of 6 sections with each section including a number of questions focussing on both General English (GE) and
Aviation English (AE). These sections are:
Grammar
20 random multiple choice questions
20 minutes
Listening
2 sections - listen to recordings and
answer questions
30 minutes
Writing
2 sections - Complete sentences and
write short answer responses
30 minutes
Reading
2 sections - read short texts and
answer questions
20 minutes
Pronunciation
2 sections - Focuses on
pronunciation and descriptive skills
20 minutes
Conversation
1 section - Engage in a short
conversation with examiner
15 minutes
Grammar
Students are asked 20 random multiple choice questions. An incomplete sentence is shown and students will need to select the correct
grammatical word to complete the sentence.
This part of the test focuses on grammar and tenses used in the English language.
Time allowed: 20 minutes
Listening
Students will listen to several audio recordings and they will need to answer questions that are based on each recording. Students are able
to listen to each recording several times but they must not go past the time limit for this section.
This part of the test focuses on listening to different types of both General English and Aviation English and gathering information from the
recordings.
Time allowed: 30 minutes
Reading
Students are shown some small texts/information sheets and they will need to answer the questions that are based on the texts.
This part of the test focuses on reading, comprehension and gathering information skills.
Time allowed: 20 minutes
Writing
This part of the ETAP exam will assess writing and comprehension skills. Students are given a series of questions where they will need to
complete sentences and also write short responses. Students also watch a short video and are required to answer short questions based
on that video. Students are able to watch the video numerous times but they must not go past the dedicated time limit for this section.
This part of the test focuses on writing, sentence structures, use of prepositions, video comprehension and gathering information skills.
Time allowed: 30 minutes
Pronunciation
This section of this test focuses on pronunciation and also the ability to describe situations. Students are shown random items of aviation based text
and they are required to read those items aloud and record their voice. Depending on testing environment, students may need to conduct this portion
separately from the rest of the group or by using our online recording system. Additionally, 2 random aviation based photos are shown and students
are required to describe the items in those photos using a combination of ICAO Standard Phraseology and their own words.
This short test focuses on reading back of aviation specific phrases and the pronunciation of those phrases. This portion of the test also assesses
the students’ ability in describing aviation based situations using their own words.
Time allowed: 20 minutes
Conversation
The final part of the ETAP test focuses on the student’s ability to engage in a short conversation. Depending on testing environment, students may need to
conduct this portion separately from the rest of the group or by using our online recording system. If being done online, students need to schedule an
appointment with a qualified and certified English assessor from Aviation English Academy. The online appointment will occur over Skype but for students
located in a testing centre, this portion of the test will consist of the assessor asking the students a series of questions with a short discussion occurring based
on the answers to those questions. The subject matter for the questions and discussion are randomly chosen by the assessor but may consist of:
• The student describing their family/friends
• The student describing their home town
• The student talking about their studies
• The student talking about their hobbies/sports
• The student talking about their favourite movie/music
This part of the test focuses on the student’s ability in holding a conversation.
Time allowed: 15 minutes
How is the ETAP exam delivered?
The ETAP exam can be delivered in 1 of 2 different ways. These are:
Online
Participants can log into our state-of-the-art secured network and sit the exam using their own computer system. The computer being used
will be required to have English typing facilities in order to complete this test and also be required to be connected to the Internet during this
test. All online students are also required to have audio recording facilities on their computer. Students sitting the test online are also
required to have a Skype account and have both audio and video features enabled on their computer in order to complete the Conversation
portion. All grading and assessments for online participant is conducted by a certified ETAP Examiner.
ETAP Testing Centre
Students, or groups of students, can attend an authorised ETAP Testing Centre and participate in the exam in approved examination
conditions. As part of the ETAP requirements, all students attending an authorised ETAP Testing Centre will be overseen by a certified
ETAP examiner.
Who grades the results?
Only certified ETAP examiners are able to assess and provide ETAP grading reports. Certified ETAP Examiners must have proven
experience and qualifications in both Aviation and General English and also be highly proficient in concepts and details relating to ICAO
Phraseology. To be valid, all ETAP Grading reports must also include the name of the Certified Examiner together with their ETAP
Certification number.
With this certification structure in place, you can be assured that the results and gradings provided meets the required quality standards of
the ETAP Examination process.
Can the ETAP results be verified?
Yes - employers and authorities are able to verify the individual results from each ETAP certificate by contacting Aviation English Academy
and providing the candidate's name and ETAP ID number. We will then issue a verified record and certificate of the results.
This verification process will give you the confidence that the presented ETAP certificate is an accurate and true representation of the testing
outcome.
Requirements
• All testing is done either at an authorised ETAP testing centre with a certified ETAP examiner present - or done online using our secured
online testing centre.
• Students attending an authorised testing centre will only need to supply a pen. All testing material will be supplied by the certified examiner.
• All students completing the test - either in a testing centre or online, will be photographed. This photograph will be used to generate the
candidate certificates and reports.
• All online students will be required to have access to a computer with English typing facilities in order to complete this test. This computer will
need to be online during this test.
• All online students will be required to have audio recording facilities on their computer. This is required for Parts 5 and 6 of this test.
• Online students are also required to have a Skype account and have both audio and video features enabled on their computer in order to
complete the Conversation portion. It is recommended that students use a headset for the Skype conversation. This will prevent possible
audio feedback from occurring during the conversation. This is required for Part 6 of this test.

English Test for Aviation Professionals

  • 1. English Test for Aviation Professionals (ETAP) "When controllers and pilots better understand that language is an imperfect medium and is easily misinterpreted, they will be careful in their use of both standardised phraseology and plain language - and the airways will be safer because of it" - Brian Day Select the space bar or click to continue
  • 2. What is ETAP? ETAP is a specialised exam designed exclusively for members of the Aviation profession. The exam is based on the standard ICAO Phraseology which consists of Aviation English. This exam also includes aspects of General English. By focussing on both Aviation English and General English, the results of the ETAP exam provides an insight into the full English proficiency of each participant and highlights which areas of English the participant needs assistance with. The scoring of the ETAP exam also allows participants, recruitment agencies and employers to gain an understanding and knowledge of the English proficiency of the person doing the exam. Each participant completing the exam will receive a graded report outlining their strengths and weaknesses and plus, if required, the training manager, recruitment manager or HR representative of the participant also receives the same report. This means that the ETAP exam can be used to measure or gauge the English proficiency for large groups - which is perfect for recruitment campaigns and/or student intakes.
  • 3. Who is ETAP designed for? ETAP is designed for Aviation professionals and/or organisations that need to have an understanding on the English ability for a specific individual or for a group of employees or new recruits. If the results show that further training is required - either to maintain operational proficiency or to improve in specific areas, then the individuals and/or their sponsors are able to identify and select a suitable training program based on the testing results.
  • 4. Overview of the ETAP exam The ETAP exam consists of 6 sections with each section including a number of questions focussing on both General English (GE) and Aviation English (AE). These sections are: Grammar 20 random multiple choice questions 20 minutes Listening 2 sections - listen to recordings and answer questions 30 minutes Writing 2 sections - Complete sentences and write short answer responses 30 minutes Reading 2 sections - read short texts and answer questions 20 minutes Pronunciation 2 sections - Focuses on pronunciation and descriptive skills 20 minutes Conversation 1 section - Engage in a short conversation with examiner 15 minutes
  • 5. Grammar Students are asked 20 random multiple choice questions. An incomplete sentence is shown and students will need to select the correct grammatical word to complete the sentence. This part of the test focuses on grammar and tenses used in the English language. Time allowed: 20 minutes
  • 6. Listening Students will listen to several audio recordings and they will need to answer questions that are based on each recording. Students are able to listen to each recording several times but they must not go past the time limit for this section. This part of the test focuses on listening to different types of both General English and Aviation English and gathering information from the recordings. Time allowed: 30 minutes
  • 7. Reading Students are shown some small texts/information sheets and they will need to answer the questions that are based on the texts. This part of the test focuses on reading, comprehension and gathering information skills. Time allowed: 20 minutes
  • 8. Writing This part of the ETAP exam will assess writing and comprehension skills. Students are given a series of questions where they will need to complete sentences and also write short responses. Students also watch a short video and are required to answer short questions based on that video. Students are able to watch the video numerous times but they must not go past the dedicated time limit for this section. This part of the test focuses on writing, sentence structures, use of prepositions, video comprehension and gathering information skills. Time allowed: 30 minutes
  • 9. Pronunciation This section of this test focuses on pronunciation and also the ability to describe situations. Students are shown random items of aviation based text and they are required to read those items aloud and record their voice. Depending on testing environment, students may need to conduct this portion separately from the rest of the group or by using our online recording system. Additionally, 2 random aviation based photos are shown and students are required to describe the items in those photos using a combination of ICAO Standard Phraseology and their own words. This short test focuses on reading back of aviation specific phrases and the pronunciation of those phrases. This portion of the test also assesses the students’ ability in describing aviation based situations using their own words. Time allowed: 20 minutes
  • 10. Conversation The final part of the ETAP test focuses on the student’s ability to engage in a short conversation. Depending on testing environment, students may need to conduct this portion separately from the rest of the group or by using our online recording system. If being done online, students need to schedule an appointment with a qualified and certified English assessor from Aviation English Academy. The online appointment will occur over Skype but for students located in a testing centre, this portion of the test will consist of the assessor asking the students a series of questions with a short discussion occurring based on the answers to those questions. The subject matter for the questions and discussion are randomly chosen by the assessor but may consist of: • The student describing their family/friends • The student describing their home town • The student talking about their studies • The student talking about their hobbies/sports • The student talking about their favourite movie/music This part of the test focuses on the student’s ability in holding a conversation. Time allowed: 15 minutes
  • 11. How is the ETAP exam delivered? The ETAP exam can be delivered in 1 of 2 different ways. These are: Online Participants can log into our state-of-the-art secured network and sit the exam using their own computer system. The computer being used will be required to have English typing facilities in order to complete this test and also be required to be connected to the Internet during this test. All online students are also required to have audio recording facilities on their computer. Students sitting the test online are also required to have a Skype account and have both audio and video features enabled on their computer in order to complete the Conversation portion. All grading and assessments for online participant is conducted by a certified ETAP Examiner. ETAP Testing Centre Students, or groups of students, can attend an authorised ETAP Testing Centre and participate in the exam in approved examination conditions. As part of the ETAP requirements, all students attending an authorised ETAP Testing Centre will be overseen by a certified ETAP examiner.
  • 12. Who grades the results? Only certified ETAP examiners are able to assess and provide ETAP grading reports. Certified ETAP Examiners must have proven experience and qualifications in both Aviation and General English and also be highly proficient in concepts and details relating to ICAO Phraseology. To be valid, all ETAP Grading reports must also include the name of the Certified Examiner together with their ETAP Certification number. With this certification structure in place, you can be assured that the results and gradings provided meets the required quality standards of the ETAP Examination process.
  • 13. Can the ETAP results be verified? Yes - employers and authorities are able to verify the individual results from each ETAP certificate by contacting Aviation English Academy and providing the candidate's name and ETAP ID number. We will then issue a verified record and certificate of the results. This verification process will give you the confidence that the presented ETAP certificate is an accurate and true representation of the testing outcome.
  • 14. Requirements • All testing is done either at an authorised ETAP testing centre with a certified ETAP examiner present - or done online using our secured online testing centre. • Students attending an authorised testing centre will only need to supply a pen. All testing material will be supplied by the certified examiner. • All students completing the test - either in a testing centre or online, will be photographed. This photograph will be used to generate the candidate certificates and reports. • All online students will be required to have access to a computer with English typing facilities in order to complete this test. This computer will need to be online during this test. • All online students will be required to have audio recording facilities on their computer. This is required for Parts 5 and 6 of this test. • Online students are also required to have a Skype account and have both audio and video features enabled on their computer in order to complete the Conversation portion. It is recommended that students use a headset for the Skype conversation. This will prevent possible audio feedback from occurring during the conversation. This is required for Part 6 of this test.
