GARDEN
ENGLISH GARDEN
•The English garden, is a style of "landscape"
garden which emerged in England in the early
18th century, and spread across Europe,
replacing the more formal, symmetrical 17th
century principal gardening style ofEurope.
•The English garden presented an idealized view
ofnature.
•It drew inspiration from paintings of landscapes
by Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin, and, in
the Anglo-Chinese garden, from the classic
Chinese gardens of the East, which had recently
been described byEuropean travellers.
ENGLISH GARDEN
The English garden usually included a lake,
sweeps of gently rolling lawns set against
groves of trees, and recreations of classical
temples, Gothic ruins, bridges, and other
picturesque architecture, designed to
recreate anidyllic pastoral landscape.
•Before English garden most garden wasarrangedin French or Dutch style .
•These French andDutch gardens have rectangular subdivision.
•Straight avenues &paths andwater contained symmetrically shaped basin.
•The new style that became known as the English
garden was invented by landscape designers William
Kent andCharles Bridgeman.
•William Kent (1685–1748) was an architect, painter
and furniture designer who introduced Palladian style
architecture to England.
•Kent's inspiration came from Palladio's buildings in
the Veneto and the landscapes and ruins around
Rome.
• His gardens were designed to complement the
Palladian architecture of the houses he built.
•Charles Bridgeman (1690–1738) was the son of a
gardener andan experienced horticulturist.
•He collaborated with Kent on several major gardens,
providing the botanical expertise which allowed Kent
torealize hisarchitectural visions.

STOURHEAD GARDEN
Before the introduction of English landscape, nature
was viewed as dangerous, cranky. The English
landscape completely changed this view to appreciate
andvalue the natural world.
ELEMENTS:
1.LAKE
•There was always a lake in the English
gardens, most were man-made but all
appeared to be natural formingbasins.
• Their edges were meandering and
irregular and often had pathways weaving
through the trees and close to the water’s
edge.
2.ROLLING LAWNS
•Rolling lawn topography allowed visitors
for surprises as they come around mounds
or niches
ELEMENTS:
3.TREEGROOVES:
•Tree groves were spread throughout the
landscape with paths that allowed the
gardens users to wander in and out of the
groves and provide a view of rolling lawns
against mass tree plantings.
4.GROTTOS :
•Grottos were used as hide outs.
•They were manmade but build to
resemble a darknatural forming cave

FRENCH GARDEN
•The French gardens were inspired by the
“Italian renaissance garden.
•Symmetrical and geometrical
•The whole of garden is composed like a
painting reaching for pure aesthetical
qualities.
•More prominentin 17thcentury.
•The French royal Garden architect André
Mollet laid the groundwork for the
supremacy of the French garden style
underLouis XIV..
1.PARTERRE.
•A planting bed, usually square
or rectangular, containing an
ornamental design made with
low closely clipped hedges,
colored gravel, and sometimes
flowers.
•Parterres were usually laid out
in geometric patterns, divided by
gravel paths.
•They were intended seen from
above froma house orterrace.
•made of turf with a pattern cut
outandfilled with gravel.
PARTERR

2.EMBROIDERY.
•A very curling decorative
pattern within a parterre,
created with trimmed yew
or box or made by cutting
the pattern out of a lawn
and filling it with colored
gravel.
EMBROIDERY
3.BOSQUET.
•A small group of trees, usually some distance from the house,
designed asan ornamental backdrop.
BOSQUET
4.ALLÉE. Astraight path, often lined with trees.
5.TOPIARY.
Trees or bushes trimmed into ornamental shapes. In French
gardens, they were usually trimmed intogeometric shapes.
6.GOOSEFOOT “PATTED'OIE”.
Three or five paths or which spread outward from a single
point.
EMBROIDERY
•Ageometric plan using the most recent discoveries ofperspective andoptics.
• Aterrace overlooking the garden, allowing the visitor tosee all atonce the entire garden.
•Trees areplanted in straight lines, andcarefully trimmed ata set height.
•The house/ palace/ chateaux serves as the central pointofthe garden, andits central ornament.
•No trees areplanted close tothe house; rather, the house is set apart bylow parterres andtrimmed bushes.
•The principle axisis crossed by one ormore perpendicular perspectives andalleys.
•The most elaborate parterres, or planting beds, in the shape of squares, ovals, circles or scrolls, are placed in a regular
andgeometric order close tothe house, tocomplement the architecture.
•The parterres near the residence are filled with embroderies, designs created with low boxwood to resemble the
patterns of a carpet, andgiven apolychrome effect by plantings offlowers, orby colored brick, gravel or sand.
•Bodies of water (canals, basins) serve as mirrors, doubling the size ofthe house orthe trees.
