Force Field: How gravity, electricity and
    magnetism can act on something that is far
                     removed from the source.

A field is a region in space in which a force acts.
More like the gravitational field that allows us
 to walk on Earth. It keeps us on the surface of
the planet instead of floating into outer space.
Force Fields are invisible
    so we can only detect
     them by seeing their
 effects on objects in the
                      field.
   For gravity we can see
the effects of the field by
      stepping on a scale
Electrical Fields:
 An electric field is
   produced by an
 electric charge or
          groups of
charges. The force
  moves from the
     center of the
            charge.
There are only three common metals found on the Periodic
Table of Elements that are strongly magnetic Iron, nickel and
cobalt.

These are often called ferromagnetic materials, named for iron,
which is the most common magnetic material of all. What could
cause certain materials to be magnetic?
Atoms of iron, nickel, and cobalt each have one pair of
electrons in their outermost shell. This pair of electrons is
        farther away from the nuclei than the outer-shell
                                 electrons of other metals

These more remote miniature magnetic fields are called a
    magnetic moment. Immense numbers of these atoms
 cluster together with their magnetic moments aligned in
   the same direction, with north at one end and south at
     the other. This large group of ferromagnetic atoms is
                                called a magnetic domain.
Magnetic Poles:
The poles of a magnet are
  referred to as the north
and south pole. The north
  pole of one magnet will
   repel the north pole of
         another magnet
electromagnets are made by
  wrapping a coil of wire around an
    iron core. When a current flows
through the wire, the electricity in
   the wire causes all the magnetic
        domains in the iron to align,
 producing a strong magnet. When
the current stops, the coil and iron
 core revert to their unmagnetized
                               state
Electromagnetic Induction:
     The process of using mechanical
energy and moving magnetic fields to
   cause an electric current to flow is
   called electromagnetic induction.

  • 3. Force Field: How gravity, electricity and magnetism can act on something that is far removed from the source. A field is a region in space in which a force acts.
  • 4. More like the gravitational field that allows us to walk on Earth. It keeps us on the surface of the planet instead of floating into outer space.
  • 5. Force Fields are invisible so we can only detect them by seeing their effects on objects in the field. For gravity we can see the effects of the field by stepping on a scale
  • 6. Electrical Fields: An electric field is produced by an electric charge or groups of charges. The force moves from the center of the charge.

  • 8. There are only three common metals found on the Periodic Table of Elements that are strongly magnetic Iron, nickel and cobalt. These are often called ferromagnetic materials, named for iron, which is the most common magnetic material of all. What could cause certain materials to be magnetic?
  • 9. Atoms of iron, nickel, and cobalt each have one pair of electrons in their outermost shell. This pair of electrons is farther away from the nuclei than the outer-shell electrons of other metals These more remote miniature magnetic fields are called a magnetic moment. Immense numbers of these atoms cluster together with their magnetic moments aligned in the same direction, with north at one end and south at the other. This large group of ferromagnetic atoms is called a magnetic domain.

When a current flows through the wire, the electricity in the wire causes all the magnetic domains in the iron to align, producing a strong magnet. When the current stops, the coil and iron core revert to their unmagnetized state
