This document discusses different camera techniques and how they can be used to represent characters. It explains that shot types and camera angles are technical codes that contribute to representation, alongside symbolic codes like mise-en-scene. Specific shot types are described that can make characters appear powerful, vulnerable, overcome or apart from others. The document also discusses problems that can arise from repetitive stereotypical representations and introduces the concept of the "male gaze", where the camera emphasizes female bodies rather than subjects.

Genre is important for both film producers and audiences. For producers, knowing the genre allows them to market the film to the appropriate target audience. It also helps producers ensure the film follows the conventions of that genre. For audiences, genre helps them easily identify if they will like a film so they can decide to see it or not. Genres are not static but change over time as hybrid genres emerge by combining elements of multiple genres. The western genre in particular has evolved from classical westerns to include subgenres like spaghetti westerns, euro westerns, and combinations with other genres like science fiction.
Sherlock represents men and women through common gender stereotypes. Sherlock and John Watson are the heroic male leads who solve crimes, while Irene Adler is shown as a sexual object when she seduces Sherlock naked. Similarly, in Luther, the title male character dominates his investigations while the female Alice is initially presented as a prisoner. However, some representations challenge stereotypes, as Adler attempts to gain power over Sherlock and Alice provides advice to Luther. Overall, the document analyzes how Sherlock and other shows use stereotypical portrayals of gender in their narratives and camerawork.
The document discusses age stereotypes in media representations of youths and old people. It finds that:
- Youths are often negatively portrayed as criminals, drug abusers, lazy, and reckless in the media. This can lead to moral panics around youth behavior.
- Old people are commonly stereotyped as frail, lonely, childlike, unproductive burdens on their families. They are seen as grumpy, fussy, and engaging in stereotypical pastimes.
- Both youth and old age stereotypes are overly broad generalizations that do not reflect the diversity of these groups. The frequent portrayal of stereotypes in media can influence public perceptions and government policies around age.
