The European Commission launched a tender to develop a secure DNS resolution infrastructure called DNS4EU. It aims to address consolidation of DNS resolution in few companies by offering a resilient, globally secure, and privacy-protecting DNS service that processes data in Europe according to EU rules. The service would be discoverable, configurable by users, and offer optional parental controls and premium services. Grants of up to 14 million euros will fund development and deployment costs, with beneficiaries needing to be legal entities established in EU countries. The RIPE community expressed technical and intervention concerns but little desire for RIPE NCC involvement.
