Techniques for stress free software releasesrouanw
The recent explosion of DevOps tools and techniques means that releasing new features doesn’t need to be a stressful all-weekend slumber party. Rouan will give you a set of steps you can take to move your release process from zero to hero.
He’ll show you how to gain confidence in your changes with automated testing and a build pipeline. He’ll share his experience of implementing push-button deployments to production, so that you can shrink your margin of error right down. He’ll tell you about Infrastructure as Code and how you can have your very own phoenix servers, so that disaster recovery is built into your release process. Finally, he’ll share techniques for blue-green deployment so that you can deploy with no impact to your customers.
Don't let your tests slow you down. Don't find out about bugs from your users. Rouan will provide a short introduction to how investing in the right production monitoring can help you find the issues that really affect your bottom line and speed up the way you build and release software.
Slides from my talk at the 2015 PHP Craft Conference in Johannesburg. Why should we care about software design? What is emergent design? What does it have to do with showers and why should we do it? Is that Sherlock Holmes?
DevOps has become possible largely due to a combination of new operations tools and established agile engineering practices, but these are not enough to realise the benefits of DevOps. Even with the best tools, DevOps is just a buzzword if you don't have the right culture. Join Rouan as he explores what DevOps culture looks like and how it supports rapid, scalable production releases. He'll talk about collaboration and how important shared responsibility is to enable it. He'll cover the cultural shifts that need to happen within an organisation in order to support DevOps, including supporting autonomous teams and breaking down silos. He'll also provide some insight into the culture of successful teams in a DevOps environment, by showing you how they build quality in, focus on feedback and automate (almost) everything.
