DIABETES IN MOTION
A partnership between Rio Maior Health Center and Superior School of
Sports:
People with Diabetes Type II (many elder people) can do physical exercise
in the Superior School of Sports in Rio Maior with health supervision of
health staff from Rio Maior Health Center.
Nurses monitor blood sugar and blood pressure.

History
o This program is coordinated by the General Direction of Health
(Portugal), since 2009.
o In january of 2017 they started the activities in Rio Maior.
o During that time they expanded this program to many other cities
such as Covilhã, Vila Real and Maia.
Fig. 1 & 2 – The Nurses and the professional
trainers are tutoring the participants.
What do they do?
o The structure of their exercises consists in:
o The warm-up (10 min);
o The aerobic exercise (30 min);
o The resisted exercise (5 to 20 min);
o The Agility/Equilibrium exercise (10 to 25 min);
o The Stretching/Flexibility exercise (5 min).
All the exercises are monitored by professionals.
o Their Schedule starts at 9:30AM to 11AM every Monday, Wednesday and
Friday, From October to June

How many people participate and their rules
o There are about 30 participants per session and there are, in
total, 40 people inscribed to this program in this season.
o The price to register is free, but there are still some rules left to
follow, some of those are:
o Bring adequate clothing;
o It’s forbidden to sit on the ground and run;
o You have to prick your finger before coming to a session;
o Bring a bottle of water and a snack.
