ESTIMATION
• THE PROCESS OF CALCULATING THE
QUANTITIES AND COSTS OF THE VARIOUS
ITEMS REQIRED IN CONNECTION WITH THE
WORK
• PREPARED BY CALCULATING THE
QUANTITIES FROM THE DIMENSIONS ON
THE DRAWINGS FOR THE VARIOUS ITEMS
REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT AND
MULTIPLIED BY UNIT COST OF THE ITEM
CONCERNED.
PURPOSE OF ESTIMATION
• TO ASCERTAIN THE NECESSARY AMOUNT OF MONEY
REQUIRED BY THE OWNER TO COMPLETE THE PROPOSED
WORK.
• TO OBTAIN ADMINISTRATIVE APPROVAL,ALLOTMENT OF
FUNDS AND TECHNICAL SANCTION
• TO ASCERTAIN QUANTITY OF MATERIALS REQUIRED TO
COMPLETE THE CONSTRUCTION
• TO CALCULATE THE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT CATAGORIES
OF WORKERS
• TO FIX UP THE COMPLETION PERIOD OF THE
CONSTRUCTION
• TO JUSTIFY THE INVESTMENT FROM BENEFIT COST RATIO
TYPES OF ESTIMATION
 DETAILED ESTIMATION : ACCONPANIED
BY REPORT,SPECIFICATION,DETAILED
DRAWINGS SHOWING PLANS OF DIFFERENT
SECTION, DESIGN DATAAND CALCULATIONS,
BASIS OF RATES ADOPTED IN ESTIMATE
 APPROXIMATE ESTIMATION :TO
FIND OUT THE APPROXIMATE COST IN A SHORT
TIME
TYPES OF ESTIMATION
• QUANTITY ESTIMATION: THIS IS ACOMPLETE ESTIMATE FOR ALL
ITEMS OF WORK REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE CONCERNED PROJECT
• REVISED ESTIMATION: DETAILED ESTIMATE FOR THE REVISED
QUANTITIES AND RATES OF ITEMS OF WORKS ORIGINALLY PROVIDED
IN THE ESTIMATE WITHOUT MATERIAL DEVIATIONS OF THE
STRUCTURAL NATURE FROM THE DESIGN ORIGINALLY APPROVED FOR
A PROJECT
• SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATION: WHILE A WORK IS IN PROGRESS
SOME CHANGES OR ADDITIONAL WORKS DUE TO MATERIAL
DEVIATION OF A STRUCTURAL NATURE FROM THE DESIGN ORIGINALLY
APPROVED MAY BE THOUGHT NECESSARY FOR THE PROJECT.
SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATE IS THEN PREPARED TO INCLUDE ALL SUCH
WORKS.
PREPERATION OF A DETAILED
ESTIMATION
• UNIT QUANTITY METHOD IS FOLLOWED TO PREPARE
DETAILED ESTIMATION.
• THE RATES PER UNIT WORK OF ONE ITEM INCLUDING
PROFIT ARE CONSIDERED FIRST AND THE TOTAL COST
FOR THE ITEM IS FOUND BY MULTIPLYING THE COST PER
UNIT OF THE RATE BY THE NUMBER OF UNITS
• PROCEDURE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS
1. MEASUREMENT AND CALCULATION OF QUANTITIES
2. ABSTRACT OF ESTIMATED COST
