Transition to a circular economy
From a linear economy... ...to a circular economy:
of value for as along as possible (Ellen
MacArthur Foundation, 2015; Bocken et
al., 2016; Kraaijenhagen et al., 2016).
All over the world we have developed
sophisticated ways to design, produce,
distribute and sell goods. By extracting
resources from the earth, refini ng them
for manufacturing, assembling them
into products and distributing them
to consumers, value is added at every
step. After the consumer uses the prod-
uct however, its value goes downhill.
continuously sell new products. The old
products end up in landfill s or are incin-
erated, quickly destroying the value that
was created in the manufacturing pro-
cess. This complete lifecycle is illustrated
below in the Value Hill. Value is added
as the product is developed (the left-
side uphill slope) and once the product
reaches the top of the hill, the product’s
value is at its maximum and after a rela-
tively short lifecycle the product’s value
is destroyed quickly and value rapidly
goes downhill.

1. Refuse: preventing the use of raw materials;
2. Reduce: reducing the use of raw materials;
3. Reuse: product reuse (second-hand, sharing of products);
4. Repair: maintenance and repair;
5. Refurbish: refurbishing a product;
6. Remanufacture: creating new products from (parts of) old
products;
7. Repurpose: product reuse for a different purpose;
8. Recycle: processing and reuse of materials; and
9. Recover energy: incineration of residual flows.

The Port of Amsterdam aims to contribute
to a circular economy in the Amsterdam
region by acting as a hub for circular building
materials. The port is looking into ways to
decrease the impact of increased logistics
related to circular building materials.

Thematic workshop: Group of sustainability
scientists (Groene Brein network) discussing
logistics solutions for circular building, e.g.
- Facilitating initiatives that directly remanufacture
building waste streams in usable resources.
- Sharing transport with local stakeholders.

Transition to a circular economy From a linear economy... ...to a circular economy: of value for as along as possible (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2015; Bocken et al., 2016; Kraaijenhagen et al., 2016). All over the world we have developed sophisticated ways to design, produce, distribute and sell goods. By extracting resources from the earth, refini ng them for manufacturing, assembling them into products and distributing them to consumers, value is added at every step. After the consumer uses the prod- uct however, its value goes downhill. continuously sell new products. The old products end up in landfill s or are incin- erated, quickly destroying the value that was created in the manufacturing pro- cess. This complete lifecycle is illustrated below in the Value Hill. Value is added as the product is developed (the left- side uphill slope) and once the product reaches the top of the hill, the product’s value is at its maximum and after a rela- tively short lifecycle the product’s value is destroyed quickly and value rapidly goes downhill. 4 (Achterberg et al., 2016)

  3. A Danish brewery is drawing on 50,000 liters of urine collected from the largest music festival in Northern Europe in producing a novelty beer aimed at the more adventurous drinker. The beer named "Pisner" - a word-play combining pilsner with local slang for urine - contains no human waste, but is produced from fields of malting barley fertilised with human urine rather than traditional animal manure or factory-made plant nutrients. "When the news that we had started brewing the Pisner came out, a lot of people thought we were filtering the urine to put it directly in the beer and we had a good laugh about that," said Henrik Vang, chief executive of brewer Norrebro Bryghus. Using human waste as fertiliser on such a scale is a novelty, said Denmark's Agriculture and Food Council, which came up with the idea for what could be the ultimate sustainable hipster beer and has already named the concept "beercycling". "If it had tasted even a bit like urine, I would put it down, but you don't even notice," said Anders Sjögren, who attended Roskilde Music Festival in 2015.   4. REgenerate. Shift to renewable energy and materials; reclaim, retain, and regenerate health of ecosystems; and return recovered biological resources to the biosphere. For example, the European power sector is moving rapidly into renewables. New investments totalled $650 billion over the 2004–2013 period.33 Likewise, Savory Institute’s promotion of holistic land management has influenced the regeneration of more than 2.5 million hectares of commercial land worldwide. Share. Keep product loop speed low and maximise utilisation of products by sharing them among users (peer-to-peer sharing of privately owned products or public sharing of a pool of products), reusing them throughout their technical lifetime (second-hand), and prolonging their life through maintenance, repair, and design for durability. For example, the BlaBlaCar car-sharing scheme is growing 200 percent a year and has 20 million registered users in 19 countries.34 Airbnb has more than one million spaces for rent in more than 34,000 cities across more than 190 countries.35 Optimise. Increase performance/efficiency of a product; remove waste in production and the supply chain (from sourcing and logistics to production, use, and end-of-use collection); leverage big data, automation, remote sensing, and steering. None of these actions requires changing the product or technology, as exemplified by the lean philosophy made famous by Toyota. Loop. Keep components and materials in closed loops and prioritise inner loops. For finite materials, this means remanufacturing products or components and as a last resort recycling materials, as Caterpillar, Michelin, Rolls Royce, and Renault are doing.36 For renewable materials, this means anaerobic digestion and extracting bio-chemicals from organic waste. In the UK, 66 percent of sewage sludge is treated in 146 anaerobic digestion plants, and another 175 plants produce bio-energy from solid waste, a number that is growing rapidly.37 Virtualise.
