Conflict is the disagreement between tw0 or more
individuals on one or more concept, process or
outcome.
What is conflict?
Why do conflicts occur?
The basic reasons for conflict are:
 Individual maps or perceptions
 The overall objective or outcome
 The thought process
When the first two are aligned the third synergizes
seamlessly.
Individual maps or perceptions
 How and what we think effects and influences our
behavior. We are largely an outcome of our own
experiences that make us look at things in a rather colored
fashion. This may not be the reality, often our perception of
truth is far from reality.
 Since we are all driven by our own set of perceptions it may
be a good idea to start on a common premises.
The overall objective or outcome
 Steven Covey in his book “Seven Habits of Highly effective
people recommends ‘Starting with ends in mind’.
Keep the common objective in mind and try to
understand how the other’s point of view can contribute to
the same.
Conflicts often occur due to the dynamics of
relationships that are based on Power, Status, Role,
and Preferences
Communication is the process of shared understanding
for action, information and relationship.
While conversation is a dynamic process of talking and,
more importantly Listening.
The point to note is that the quality of listening is the
make or break factor within the communication that
may cause of avert a conflict
Rather than seeking an optimum balance between
contradictions, it helps to engage in thinking in terms
of ‘both’ rather than ‘either or’ without losing the
sight of the goodness to be achieved.
