2 Defining air pollution Air pollution is contamination and degradation of qualitative and quantitative attributes of ambient atmospheric air to the extent of being detrimental to human health and deterioration of plants, animals, aggravation of global warming climate change , economic inequality, agriculture productivity loss among other things. Air pollution prospers few at the cost of whole planet.
Types of air pollution Based on location Indoor Smoke and smog from cooking fuel, cigarettes. VOCs (Volatile organic compounds) Toluene, Xylene, formaldehyde from flooring, painting etc. Outdoor Transport, factories, agriculture, mining, construction. Based on identity of Pollutants Primary pollutant Emits and directly impacts atmospheric air quality and quantity. Examples CO2, CO, CH4, Nox, Sox, CFCs Secondary pollutant Derived pollutants formed in atmosphere as a result of photochemical reactions among various primary pollutants. PAN (Peroxyl acetyl nitrate), tropospheric ozone, Sulphuric acid, Nitric acids etc. 3
