In a remote barangay in Northern Cebu, a rural health unit has recently started
using a government-supported telemedicine program. A pregnant mother visits
the barangay health center for a routine check-up. The midwife uses a portable
ultrasound device connected to a smartphone application. The scan results are
automatically uploaded to a secure cloud-based health platform.
Since the area has unstable internet connectivity, the uploaded data is
reviewed later in the day by an obstetrician from a provincial hospital in Cebu
City. The doctor sends back written feedback, prescription advice, and follow-
up instructions through the same platform.
However, during a recent dengue outbreak in nearby communities, the same
system was also used to monitor patients’ symptoms remotely, reducing
hospital congestion and helping prioritize severe cases.
