Unit 1 – Quantity Estimation
 ESTIMATION
Estimation is the scientific method of determining the approximate cost of
an engineering project before its execution.
 It may differ from the exact cost calculated after the project's completion.
 Estimation requires thorough knowledge of construction procedures,
material and labor costs, along with skill, experience, foresight, and good
judgment.

1. Philosophy
Unit 1 – Quantity Estimation
Quantity estimation is the backbone of project planning in civil engineering.
It involves calculating the expected costs and resources needed for a project,
allowing for efficient budgeting and resource allocation.

2. Purpose
Unit 1 – Quantity Estimation
 Budget Control: Helps in setting a budget and ensuring the project stays
within financial constraints.
 Resource Planning: Determines the quantity of materials and labor
required, ensuring that resources are available when needed.
 Project Feasibility: Assesses whether a project is financially viable and
worth pursuing.
 Decision-Making: Provides essential data for making informed decisions
regarding project scope, design, and execution.

3. Methods of estimation
Unit 1 – Quantity Estimation
 Centre Line Method:
 Description: Calculates the total length of the center lines of walls and
partitions, considering the building's layout.
 Usage: Suitable for buildings with consistent wall thicknesses and
symmetrical layouts.
 Calculation: Sum the center lines of all walls, including both internal
and external walls, and multiply by the wall thickness and height to find
quantities.

3. Methods of estimation (cond…)
Unit 1 – Quantity Estimation
Long and Short Wall Method:
 Description: Separates walls into long and short categories, measuring
their lengths individually.
 Usage: Effective for buildings with varying wall thicknesses or irregular
layouts.
 Calculation:
 Measure the outer lengths of long walls.
 Measure the inner lengths of short walls.
 Adjust lengths by adding/subtracting half the breadth of walls at
junctions.

4. Types of estimates
Unit 1 – Quantity Estimation
 Approximate Estimates:
 Purpose: Provides a rough cost figure for initial project evaluation.
 Methods:
 Plinth Area Method: Calculates the cost based on the plinth area
(covered area) of the building multiplied by the plinth area rate.
 Cubic Rate Method: Uses the volume of the building (length ×
breadth × height) multiplied by the cubic rate to estimate the cost.
 Usage: Suitable for feasibility studies, preliminary budgeting, and early-
stage planning.
4. Types of estimates (cond…)
Unit 1 – Quantity Estimation
 Detailed Estimates:
 Purpose: Offers a precise calculation of costs and quantities for
comprehensive project planning and execution.
 Components:
 Measurements: Detailed measurements of all components (e.g., walls,
floors, roofs).
 Unit Rates: Application of current market rates for materials and labor.
 Breakdown: Itemized list of all construction activities and their
associated costs.
 Usage: Essential for obtaining project approval, securing funding, and
guiding the actual construction process.
