Introduction
Community Pharmacy is the type of pharmacy that
provides pharmaceutical care directly to the public.
It serves as the first point of contact for healthcare
services and plays an essential role in dispensing
medicines, promoting health, preventing diseases and
providing patient counseling.
Definition: Community Pharmacy is a healthcare
setup where medicines are procured, stored,
dispensed and supplied to the general public under
the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
These are monitored under professional standards of
state pharmacy council and PCI .

1. Dispensing Functions: Dispensing of medicines begins
with receiving and interpreting the prescription to ensure
accuracy. The pharmacist then selects and prepares the
required medicine, labels it with appropriate instructions and
dispenses it after verifying the drug details. Finally, patient
counseling is provided regarding dosage, method of
administration, storage and necessary precautions to ensure
safe and effective use of the medicine.
2. Patient Care Services: Community pharmacists provide
medication counseling by explaining the correct use of
medicines, dosage, precautions and possible side effects.
They promote health education on disease prevention and
healthy lifestyle practices. Pharmacists also monitor drug
therapy to ensure the safety and effectiveness of treatment.
They also encourage medication adherence by helping
patients follow their prescribed treatment.
3. Drug Information Services: Community pharmacists provide reliable
information on the safe and rational use of medicines. They advise patients about
drug interactions, possible adverse effects, correct dosage instructions, proper
storage conditions and the appropriate use of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines
that helping to ensure safe and effective therapy.
4. Inventory Management: Inventory management involves the procurement of
medicines from authorized suppliers, their proper storage under recommended
conditions and effective stock control to maintain adequate inventory levels. It also
includes monitoring expiry dates to prevent the dispensing of expired medicines
and ensuring cold chain maintenance for temperature-sensitive products such as
vaccines, insulin and certain biologicals to preserve their quality and efficacy.
5. Administrative Functions: Administrative functions include maintaining records
of prescriptions, inventory, sales, and purchases for legal and operational
purposes. They also involve financial management, such as billing and accounting,
ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and supervising
pharmacy staff to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality pharmaceutical
services.

 Drug stores in India are regulated

License
Minimum area of Drug Store Premises:
 10 m² (Retail or Wholesale)
 15 m² (Combined Retail + Wholesale)
 Clean and hygienic premises with good
ventilation and lighting
 Registered Pharmacist: Retail pharmacy
must employ a Registered Pharmacist under
State Pharmacy Council.

Proprietary products are ready-made pharmaceutical

any compounding.
These products are supplied in their original
manufacturer's packaging and are generally dispensed
without modification.

Receive Patient: Welcome the patient and receive the

Review Prescription / Symptoms: Carefully review the
prescription or understand the patient's complaint.
Select the Medicine: Identify and select the appropriate
medicine according to the prescription or patient's need.
Verify the Medicine: Check the drug name, dosage form,
strength and required quantity.
Check Expiry & Storage Condition: Ensure the medicine is not
expired and has been stored under appropriate conditions.

Label the Medicine: Mention dose, frequency, route,
duration and special instructions.
Patient Counselling: Explain how and when to take the
medicine, precautions, storage and important side effects.
Billing: Prepare the bill and complete the payment process.

statutory records.
Hand Over Medicine: Perform a final check and give the
correct medicine to the correct patient.
