INTRODUCTION
spent most of my middle school years and early high school
years running away from God. I found myself doing all the
wrong things with all the wrong people. On one occasion, I
dropped out of school and even became a street boy and went
through all the intriguing challenges. God can never forsake His
own. There was a soft voice that kept speaking to me and when I
finally went back to school sat and passed my high school exams
then joined Moi University to study Economics. I never looked
back or played games with God. I decided to dedicate myself to
serving Him.
What is the essence of sharing my little story? Well, I share more
in my first book; Behind the Scenes. I mean in the church or the house
of God, there are many ministries where you can effectively serve.
Don’t just sit and warm your chair. Serve God and as you serve
Him. You will step by step grow spiritually.
In the long run the Lord plucked me from where I was. Even
though I was not really living for Him but would still attend church.
On Sunday morning I was heading to our church. I developed a
strong desire to serve Him as an usher, protocol and so on. That is
how the spirit of serving came to me.
A church is a public place of worship, usually for people of the
Christian religion. Some Christian denominations, or groups, also
have buildings called cathedrals. A cathedral serves as the central,
or main, church for a geographical area.

In Ephesians 2:19–22, Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and
foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of
God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus
Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being
joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are
being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
The chief metaphor Paul uses is that of a building—the household
of God. Christians are part of the household in the sense that they
have been adopted into the family of God, which is another image
that Scripture uses to describe the church.
According to various research done, the Church of Christ traces its
history back to the original organization that was established by
Jesus Christ in the first century AD.
We can say that the church has been in existence for over two
thousand years. Just like every other organization that has been
around for so long, there are laid down protocols, procedures, and
procedures that determine how members of the organization
conform to the expected norms. These processes are guidelines
generally accepted as correct and proper in the organization.
For the church as an organization to run smoothly and efficiently,
it is necessary to have a structure, including a Shepherd, Pastor,
Priest, Overseer, Bishop, etc., who has been chosen by God to
provide direction, foresight, feed His people with knowledge,
discipline and sound doctrinal teaching with wisdom and
understanding.
Jeremiah 3:15, "And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who
will feed you with knowledge and understanding.”

The Apostles of the early church, after Jesus’ ascension, displayed
tremendous organizational skills and capacity in handling doctrine,
discipline, and order, and meeting the spiritual needs of the early
church.
This is aptly recorded in the book of Acts 6:1-7; Now in those days,
when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint
against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in
the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples
and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve
tables. “Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good
reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this
business; "but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry
of the word." And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose
Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus,
Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6whom
they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.
Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly
in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.
Their efficiency, excellence, organization, and effectiveness were
crucial to the successes they recorded in the early church.
The Holy Bible, in the book of 1 Corinthians14: 40 (NKJV)
records, “Let all things be done decently and in order.”
The encounter of Jesus Christ in the temple, in the book of John
2:14 -15; “And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and
doves, and the moneychangers doing business. When He had made a whip of
cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and
poured out the changers' money and overturned the tables”.

Take these things away! Do not make My Father's house a house
of merchandise! Jesus clearly demonstrating the need for order to
be in the church.
God has good plans for us and we can get into it if we obey Him
and apply the principles that perfect it. He has the best future for
use. These principles can be applied as you serve in church.

Chapter 1
WHAT IS CHURCH
PROTOCOL?
hurch ministry involves an organized and purposeful
effort to serve the church’s mission and purpose or make
the church better. The ministry’s impact goes beyond
worship services, catering to the congregation’s and
surrounding community’s diverse needs.
The church ministry actions are done on behalf of the church
and cover a broad range of activities, including preaching,
educational programs, worship teams, and more.
Ministries are instrumental in fostering the congregation’s
spiritual growth and engagement which creates a fulfilling
church experience that embraces Christian values as
emphasized by Jesus Christ.
In the heart of the church, following a set way of doing
things, known as protocol, is more than just a rule; it’s a way
of showing respect, reverence and creating harmony.
The Bible tells us that in the church, “God is not the author of
confusion but of peace.”

Think of protocol like the glue that holds everything together,
making sure things run smoothly, whether it’s at a local
church, a big national gathering, or even on the global stage.
Church protocol plays a crucial role in maintaining order,
respect, and reverence within the house of worship. Protocol
in the church is not a modern invention but has its roots in
biblical times.
Starting from the Old Testament to the New Testament,
examples of protocol are evident, guiding how activities and
interactions within the church are conducted.
Biblical Examples of Protocol
1) Moses and the Tent of Meeting: In Exodus 33:7-11, Moses
set up the Tent of Meeting outside the camp, and
everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the
tent. When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud
would descend, and the Lord would speak to Moses.
This established a protocol of approaching God’s
presence.
2) The Levites’ Role: In Numbers 3:5-10, the Levites were
appointed to assist Aaron and the priests, serving in
the tabernacle and maintaining its sanctity. This
highlights the organized structure and designated roles
within the house of worship.
3) Jesus Feeding the 5000: In Mark 6:39-40, Jesus directed
the disciples to have the people sit down in groups on

the green grass. This orderly arrangement ensured
efficient distribution of food, illustrating the
importance of order in ministry.
4) The Early Church in Acts: In Acts 6:1-7, the early church
appointed deacons to handle daily distributions so the
apostles could focus on prayer and ministry of the
word. This delegation of responsibilities is a
foundational aspect of church protocol.
Embark on an exploration of the etymology and evolution of
the term “Protocol” from its Greek roots, serving as the glue
binding official life in the society.
Recent studies indicate a 20% improvement in organizational
efficiency with well-implemented protocol systems,
demonstrating the tangible impact on church operations.
Entrenched within the church structure is a divine
appointment of leaders — the pastor, bishop, and overseer

The term protocol comes from the Greek words meaning
“the first glue.” Nowadays, protocol can be understood as the
glue which holds official life in the society together. Whether
on the local, national or international level, proper protocol
is vital in assuring that relations between the officials of
organizations and governments are conducted with
maximum efficiency.
Protocol is a code of ceremonial forms and courtesies and
processes considered as right and accurate in official dealings
or a system of rules and acceptable behavior used at official
ceremonies and occasions.
Protocol is defined as the system of rules and acceptable

as proper and correct in official dealing.
If a church is to operate in a decent and orderly fashion, there
must be an authority over the house; the Pastor, Bishop and
an Overseer etc. has been chosen by God to provide vision,
knowledge, understanding, sound doctrine, discipline and
order.
The church is the most important place where dignity,
protocol, respect and reverence should be maintained. Why
so? Well, because when we come to the church and its
services; we are entering into the Kingdom of God on earth,
His habitation, and we choose to honor this sacred place by
our attentiveness to what is proper and ordered.

At that very moment, we can reflect the image of Christ
within us by our actions.
In respect to its community, every church creates a suitable
environment, follows the order in everything it offers and
establishes its own set of etiquette rules.
Modern ceremonies in the Lord’s house are nearly impossible
without protocol officers.

It is a combination of good manners and communication
skills that lead to a competent and polite event, be it
coronation, inauguration or ceremony.
Special procedures are used in politics, at the official level and
anywhere where attendants expect to mark their status, get
respect and feel responsible for their role in the society.
The Protocol department is the arm of the Church that keeps
orderliness with in and out of the Church. Their primary duty
is to make sure that no harm befalls any member of the
Pastoral body during any Church gatherings. It is also their
duty to make sure that all vehicles to Church members and
visitors are parked properly in order to avoid congestion and
accidents in the car park belonging to the Church.
A church protocol officer is a person who makes sure that all
the religious ceremonies, including memorial services, funerals,
weddings, meetings, and other services are observed according
to the proper instructions.

A church protocol officer is perfect at knowing the etiquette
rules. This person or team of people ensures that the
traditions carried throughout the centuries are honored,
everything runs in the correct order, and every service is
distributed according to the fundamental rules of the house
of God.
The Protocol Department is an arm of the church saddled
with the responsibility of providing a hospitable and
conducive environment for visiting Guest Ministers (both
Local and International) with the sole aim of making them feel
at home outside their home.
The Protocol Team also caters for the well-being of the
Resident Pastor and facilitate his ministry by providing
requisite support services to assist him/her deliver God`s
message with no hindrance.
Making Church Special: When we step into a church, it’s not
just any place; it’s like entering God’s kingdom on earth.
That’s why we pay attention to doing things in an organized
and respectful way – it’s our way of honoring the sacredness
of the church. Every church has its own rules, and modern
church events wouldn’t work well without the help of special
protocol officers.
What does the Bible Say?
The Bible encourages us to do things “decently and in order.”
This means following a structure and being organized during

church activities. It’s a way of showing respect to God and
each other.
Meet the Protocol Department:
Think of the Protocol Department as the superheroes of the
church. They make sure everything is in order, and everyone
is safe during church gatherings. They also take care of
parking so there’s no chaos or accidents.
The Experts: Protocol Officers:
Meet the experts – the protocol officers. They know all the
right ways of doing things. From important ceremonies like
weddings and funerals to regular meetings, they make sure
everything follows the traditions and rules of the church.
Being Friendly to Guests:
The Protocol Department isn’t just about rules; it’s also about
being friendly. When important guests, like ministers, visit
the church, these officers make them feel at home. They
create a warm and welcoming environment so that the guests
can share their messages without any worries.
Taking Care of the Pastor:
The Protocol Team doesn’t just focus on guests; they also
take care of the Pastor. By providing support services, they
make sure nothing gets in the way of the Pastor delivering
God’s message.
Protocol encompasses a set of ceremonial forms, courtesies,
and processes essential for maintaining order and efficiency

in official dealings. Whether on a local, national, or
international level, adherence to proper protocol ensures
smooth relations among organizational and governmental
officials.
The Protocol School of Washington defines protocol as the fine art
and science of facilitating events for people of different cultures to find a
common purpose, engage strategic and sensitive issues, and create
relationships and memories of a lifetime.
We can also say it is a blend of good manners and good
communication skills that brings politeness at events, be it
birthdays, coronations, government luncheons, wedding
ceremonies, funerals, etc.
The goal at the end of the day is to show respect, courtesy,
and hospitality.
In the pursuit of peace and orderliness within the church,
protocol plays a crucial role. Rooted in the Greek concept of
“the first glue,” protocol serves as the binding force that
maintains dignity and reverence in the church.
This book aims to elucidate the significance of protocol
within the church context and delineate the responsibilities
and duties of its members.
Tasked with maintaining orderliness within and outside the
church, the Protocol Department plays a pivotal role. From
ensuring the safety of members during gatherings to
facilitating the smooth execution of religious ceremonies, the
department’s responsibilities are multifaceted.

Having understood this, what then is Church Protocol?
According to Rev. Dr. Danny L. Boyd, church protocol is a
code of courtesies, proper practices, set of rules regarding church worship
service.
Ademola Adetuberu described church protocol as a collection
of rules, the way we approach God and serve his oracles, and the way we
engage God’s people in a beautiful and orderly way to ensure that there
is no interference.
Looking from both the definitions we can say, church
protocol is basically how we conduct ourselves in the worship
and service of God. The essence of protocol is for decency
and order to be in place. The church according to Boyd, is
the most important place where dignity, protocol, respect,
and reverence should be maintained.
It is important to state that church protocol is not “one size fits
all.” The protocol for Catholic, Anglican, Pentecostal, etc.,
churches may differ. Each church defines its protocol
according to its doctrines and beliefs. However, in spite of
the differences, the fundamental principles of order, rules,
reverence, and courtesy in the house of worship remain
constant.
It is these protocols, rules, and guidelines that prescribe how
individuals, the clergy, and the congregation comfort
themselves in the worship of God, especially in fulfilling the
mandate of the great commission (Mark 16:15) and
commandment (Mathew 22:37-40) given by Jesus Christ.

With this in mind we have to develop a code of ethics to treat
brethren with dignity and courtesy to help them have a
conducive worshipping environment thus Church protocol
and etiquette should be put in place.

It is a system of rules that explain the correct conduct and
procedures to be followed in formal situations.

A church protocol officer is perfect at knowing the etiquette
rules. This person or team of people ensures that the traditions
carried are honoured, everything runs in the correct order, and
every service is distributed according to the fundamental rules
of the house of God.
A church protocol officer is the one who ensures that all
religious ceremonies, such as marriages, conferences, church
services, child dedications, funeral services, birthday
celebrations, and other services are carried out in compliance
with the church’s established doctrines and beliefs.
Protocol officers are experts in the field of protocol and
etiquette, and they have a deep understanding of the complex
rules and customs that govern the behavior of individuals in
professional settings.

They are responsible for ensuring that protocol is followed
during events, meetings, and other occasions, and they work
closely with event planners, executives, and other stakeholders
to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
One of the main responsibilities of a protocol officer is to
coordinate logistics for events and meetings. This includes
arranging transportation, accommodations, and meals for
attendees, as well as managing the schedule and agenda for the
event.
Protocol officers also work closely with event planners to
ensure that the event is held in a suitable location and that all
necessary arrangements are made for attendees.
In addition to coordinating logistics, protocol officers also
play a key role in managing protocol during events. This
includes managing the seating arrangements for attendees,
overseeing the introductions and presentations, and ensuring
that everyone follows proper etiquette and protocol.
Protocol officers also serve as liaisons between attendees and
event organizers, facilitating communication and ensuring that
everyone is aware of the protocols and expectations for the
event.
Due to the fact that church protocol officers are custodians of
etiquette in the church, they make sure that every service is
administered in accordance with the church norms. While
majority of the church traditions are still in place, some have
evolved over the years, to keep up with the fast-paced world.

Protocol officers oversee various aspects of church
proceedings, including maintaining order during services,
coordinating with guest ministers, and providing support to
the resident pastor. Their duties extend to attending to the
welfare and security of all individuals within the church
premises.
Let me share a bit of my journey and experience the protocol
and etiquette ministry. When I look back in my life and career
journey, I can now see more clearly the many ways God
shaped my life and directed my steps to His service.
My journey started 25 years ago, when I gave my life to Jesus
Christ that changed my life to date. In my book; ‘Behind The
Scenes’; I share my journey from a street boy to accepting
Christ, which marked the beginning of my spiritual journey
and growth in faith.
One thing that I have learnt is that God will always lead us in
the direction of his intended purpose for our lives, He has also
given us the free will to decide whether we will follow His will
or not.
I was later elected as a leader in Christian Union at the Moi
University, where I served as an usher and since we did not
have a complete structure as the church would be. I now see
that I also served in the protocol ministry during our meetings.
Leading and hearing the voice of God requires daily obedience,
a consistent submission in life’s small moments. I later joined
the emergency response work.

In every place I worked or served I gravitated towards
ensuring that everything was moving smoothly as was planned
and this followed me to all the churches I joined where I
served in different capacities including the ministry of
protocol which forms the basis on which I share the deep
insight I learnt over the years.
Hebrews 13:2; Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some
have entertained angels unawares.
Having this in mind, let us take a look at some of the
functions, duties, responsibilities and qualifications of a
church protocol officer.
Developing comprehensive protocol is another critical aspect
of risk management. This includes regular safety audits of
church facilities to identify and mitigate potential hazards,
such as fire risks or structural issues. It also involves setting
up protocols for child safety, which is paramount in any
ministry or church-related activities. Training of protocol
involves choosing the right team of people to work with.
Here are some of the qualifications to consider;
Qualifications of Protocol Officers
1) Strong Faith: A deep and active faith in God.
2) Experience: Prior experience in event planning or related
fields.

3) Education: A degree or certification in hospitality,
management, or a related field as an added advantage
though basic education is enough.
4) Training: Completion of protocol training programs.
5) References: Strong references from previous employers
or church leaders.
6) Multilingual: Ability to speak multiple languages is a
plus.
7) Physical Stamina: Good physical health to handle long
hours of standing and moving.
8) First Aid Knowledge: Basic knowledge of first aid.
9) Problem-Solving Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities.
10)Tech-Savvy: Comfortable using technology for planning
and communication.
11) Team Player: Ability to work well in a team.
12) Conflict Resolution Skills: Capable of managing and
resolving conflicts effectively.
Incorporating capable people to support and minster in your
protocol ministry can help increase enthusiasm for the
ministry and within the church and provide opportunities for
the team to serve and grow spiritually.
To ensure an effective team, you’ll want to train your people
with the skills necessary to minister in the protocol ministry.
Here are some best attributes to consider when choosing the
protocol team.

Attributes of a Good Protocol Officer
1) Flexible and tireless, willing to work long hours at often
odd or inconvenient times.
2) Excellent communicators with impeccable personal
appearance and conduct.
3) Significant experience in etiquette, event planning, and
negotiation tactics.
4) Excellent listening, responding and anticipating skills.
5) Exemplary Organizational and interpersonal Skills.
6) Humble and Sensitivity to the needs of others.
7) Critical thinkers and solution oriented.
PROTOCOL OFFICER DUTIES
Apostle Paul teaching the Church in Colossae on serving, revealed
the importance of training for effective serving. Paul sums it up
that the greatest responsibility of a believer of Jesus is to serve both
in heart and spirit.
What are some of the duties of a protocol ministry?
 Assisting and taking care of the pastor, bishop, guest
ministers, etc. before, during, and after the course of
the service, meeting, or an event in the church.
 Attending all meetings and services in the Lord’s house.
 Identifying visiting ministers, special guests, and church
visitors and ensuring they are attended to appropriately.

Member should be
very protocol member should possess certain
characteristic of a great spiritual servant. One of the
marks of a great protocol minister is seen on the way they
handle their work or operation. The person who desires to be
a protocol officer must be ready to serve as though they
serving the Lord Himself.
How does an effective protocol officer;
Every Protocol Member should be:
1) Spiritual.
Since we understand that the physical is controlled by the
spiritual, the Protocol Department should take spiritual lives
especially prayers and studying of the word very seriously.
John 6:63; “It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh profits nothing.”
(NKJV).

2) Polite and Cheerful.
As they will be interacting with people from different
backgrounds the Protocol Members should always maintain a
polite and cheerful appearance with all.
3) Organized
As a department that organize the travel, accommodation and
other related matters of Guest Ministers, every member is
expected to have a high level of organization shown in their
individual lives as well.
4) Submissive.
They should submit to each other and to the church leadership
and guest ministers, out of respect for God. Even though
some aspects of the work may look demeaning.
Ephesians 5:21; “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of
God.”
5) Excellence
Protocol Members are to be committed to efficiency and
excellence, always looking for ways to improve – because our
God is a God of Excellence.
6) Patient
Protocol Members must always be committed to exhibiting
patience having in mind that a lot of people come with
different burdens.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

The protocol members are like the ‘Special Services” section of
the Church. Their area of focus is on the pastorate and guest
Ministers. The impression which the protocol members make
on guest ministers and the associates of the guest ministers
will greatly affect their perception of the church.
They conduct preliminary engagement with guest prior to the
scheduled arrival of guest minister, preliminary engagement is
established with the guest to introduce the protocol and seek
information on specific needs of the guest that should be
taken care of during the visit.
Some people believe that the protocol officer duties are the
same as the responsibilities of the ushering team. It is not true,
and the two job positions differ from one other.
A protocol officer usually does not guide or help visitors to be
seated, does not hand over books or leaflets, does not greet
every other person at the entrance, does not entertain the first
timers, etc.

At the same time, many churches ensure that their officers
work hand in hand with ushers, armour bearers, security,
sanctuary keepers, traffic controllers and other people to

do to fulfil their objective. In church for example, protocol
department is given specific function which support the
divine agenda of the church. Therefor the people working in
these departments must have certain qualities to discharge
their duties in line with divine mandate of the church.
What are some of the general functions in the protocol
department to help the leaders in the church discharge their
duties without any hindrances;
1) Visitor/Guest Management: The protocol officer is
in charge of coordinating high-profile visitors and
guest ministers to the church.
2) The protocol officer is responsible for ensuring that all
departments involved are aware of their
responsibilities and duties in connection with a visit.
3) Helps to organize meetings with the pastor, bishop,

While they may appear straightforward at first glance, it is a

breakdown earlier.
While the protocol officer works with other units in the

and after the course of the service, meeting, or an event in
the church.
Now let us explore the competencies a church protocol
officer should possess. They are tools that help church
protocol officers become efficient, effective, and successful
in their roles and responsibility.
Good communication skills are important for protocol
officers because they need to establish expectations for good
etiquette at important events and ceremonies. They also
coordinate events and need to communicate with multiple
stakeholders to ensure events operate smoothly.
Protocol officers are almost always involved any time high
ranking government officials meet. When they are doing their
job well, their presence is all but undetected — they will iron
out the details of a meeting and coordinate with local hosts,
but almost all of this is well outside of the spotlight. In most

cases, the only time officers intervene is when a gaffe or
protocol violation has or is immediately about to occur.
By working beforehand to make sure that everything goes as
it should, crises and gaffes can be avoided or at least
minimized.
In addition to coordinating, most protocol officers also
engage in quite a bit of direct advising. They will typically
coach leaders or speakers about what to do and how to act.
Depending on the seriousness of the event or engagement in
question, the officer may help rehearse or practice different
greetings or role-play potentially tough scenarios. When
foreign cultures are involved, the protocol officer will
research potentially offensive customs or turns of phrase, and
will coach all travelers of common mistakes and ways to
avoid them.
Protocol officers provide a framework for order and
consistency, ensuring that everyone knows what is expected
of them. This, in turn, allows tasks to be performed more
efficiently and effectively, reducing the risk of errors, delays,
or miscommunications.
Protocol officers must know how to make everyone feel

You must be able to remember the minutest details, plan for

people and time management. Coordination is the key to a

assignment is first spiritual. The church is not just any
organization, but a spiritual one.

Timothy 2:15, Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they
continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control, (NKJV), and in
prayers (1 Thessalonians 5:17; pray without ceasing).
Intellectual Competence: This role is normally occupied by
individuals who have completed particular courses and
training, read protocol books, studied etiquette rules, and
learned church roles.
Relational Competence: This is a skill that enables the
protocol officer to deal with complex situations, and difficult
people, and be able to listen and understand other people
(Romans 12:18; If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live
peaceably with all men.

trustworthiness, patience, empathy and understanding,
reliability and dependability, influence and persuasiveness are

protocol members. These qualities shape their interactions
and contribute to a welcoming and hospitable environment.

productivity in many churches depends so much in the way
relationships are nurtured. Matters to do with the team
serving. As a protocol team, you should ensure that both the

regulations which are supported by the scriptures. The
question you might be asking is this; how should believers
behave when they come to church or a function;
