INTRODUCTION
JOB
 “…work a person does regularly to earn money.”
(Webster’s Dictionary)
 Education and special training may or may not be
required
 A job is “safe” meaning stability of work and income
are present, but it is also “unsafe” because economic
changes can effect stability.
 Short-term & Varies by demand
 Typically hourly wage
CAREER
 … “a profession for which one trains and which is
undertaken as a permanent calling.” (Webster’s
Dictionary)
 Requires specialized education or skill
 May not be stable due to encouragement to take risk
in moving up the career chain
 Long Term & Varies depending on value to society
 More non-monetary benifits
 Typically paid salaried

1. Career Assessment
2. Development Plan
3. S.O. Chart
4. I Will / I Won’t Statements
 In order for DRESS to work effectively having a clear
outlined goal is necessary.
 The Preparation Steps will help fine tune your goal.
CAREER ASSESSMENT
 Very valuable for people changing industries
 Allows you to determine what types of career’s best
fit your personality and leadership type
 Once you have results from your assessment
research the job on places like glassdoor.com and
through local career counselors.
 Ask yourself the following questions:
 Should you leave your current company?
 Is it time for an industry change?
 Is there a department I would like to work in?
 What education or training is required to advance my career?
DEVELOPMENT PLAN
 A Development Plan is a way to track and monitor
your goals.
 Some plans are complex some very simple.
 All Development plans follow the same guidelines
 Establishing a clear goal
 Milestones
 Path with a clear beginning and end point
 Able to be edited and changed during the development process
DEVELOPMENT PLAN (GOAL)
 First step to a successful Development Plan is to
establish a clear goal
 Make the goal something that really speaks to you
 The goal can be as specific or broad as you like BUT
it must be tangible
 Once the goal is established the Development Plan
can be created
DEVELOPMENT PLAN (MILESTONES)
 Milestones are markers that help keep you on the
correct path to success
 Each milestone will have a complete by date
 This date does not have to be a specific day but more of a
general guideline of when to be completed with tasks
 Make sure milestones are long enough to achieve
them but not too long were they will leave you bored
 If need be break a large milestone up into smaller
more manageable steps
 Don’t be afraid to adjust you milestones along the
way

 Information to achieve each milestone in your
development plan

 Needs to be more detail oriented
 Known for Job Hopping
 Gets Distracted easily
 No Foreign Language Skills
S.O. CHART (SUCCESS)
 Items needed to achieve milestones in the
Development Plan
 Good S.O. Charts have 3 to 5 bullet points
 Success should be positive things that will help you
to accomplish each milestone
 This increases motivation and provide positive
feedback
S.O. CHART (OBSTACLES)
 Obstacles should be realistic items that may be
encountered during the milestone process
 This step tends to be more difficult then the Success
points
 Figuring out roadblocks will help to determine ways
to work around issues before they occur
I WILL / I WON’T STATEMENTS
 These statements become a daily reminder of what
you want to achieve and what is standing in your way
of achieving your goal.
 The I Will statement should be something that
motivates you which will help you feel motivated
daily
 The I Won’t statement should be a simple obstacle
that can be fixed and stands in your way of success
 Write the statements down and post them
somewhere to look at daily
EXAMPLE I WILL / I WON’T STATEMENT
I will become an Export Manager in 6 years!
I Won’t let myself procrastinate about completing
my education.
CONCLUSION

DEVELOPMENT PLAN (GOAL)  First step to a successful Development Plan is to establish a clear goal  Make the goal something that really speaks to you  The goal can be as specific or broad as you like BUT it must be tangible  Once the goal is established the Development Plan can be created

DEVELOPMENT PLAN (MILESTONES)  Milestones are markers that help keep you on the correct path to success  Each milestone will have a complete by date  This date does not have to be a specific day but more of a general guideline of when to be completed with tasks  Make sure milestones are long enough to achieve them but not too long were they will leave you bored  If need be break a large milestone up into smaller more manageable steps  Don’t be afraid to adjust you milestones along the way

CHART  S.O. stands for Success / Obstacles  Similar to a pro/con list  Information to achieve each milestone in your development plan Success Obstacles  Learn Quickly  Passionate  SAP Knowledge  Regional Transport Background  Good Reputation with Clients  Money for School  Needs to be more detail oriented  Known for Job Hopping  Gets Distracted easily  No Foreign Language Skills
  • 14. S.O. CHART (SUCCESS)  Items needed to achieve milestones in the Development Plan  Good S.O. Charts have 3 to 5 bullet points  Success should be positive things that will help you to accomplish each milestone  This increases motivation and provide positive feedback
  • 15. S.O. CHART (OBSTACLES)  Obstacles should be realistic items that may be encountered during the milestone process  This step tends to be more difficult then the Success points  Figuring out roadblocks will help to determine ways to work around issues before they occur
  • 16. I WILL / I WON’T STATEMENTS  These statements become a daily reminder of what you want to achieve and what is standing in your way of achieving your goal.  The I Will statement should be something that motivates you which will help you feel motivated daily  The I Won’t statement should be a simple obstacle that can be fixed and stands in your way of success  Write the statements down and post them somewhere to look at daily
  • 17. EXAMPLE I WILL / I WON’T STATEMENT I will become an Export Manager in 6 years! I Won’t let myself procrastinate about completing my education.
