SEMESTER
Packaging is the science, art and technology of enclosing or
protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use.
Packaging also refers to the process of design, evaluation,
and production of packages.
Pharmaceutical packaging can be defined as the economical
means of providing presentation, protection, identification ,
information, convenience ,compliance , integrity and
stability of the product .
INTRODUCTION
TYPES OF PACKAGING
 Primary packaging- is the material that first envelops the
product and hold it. This usually is the smallest unit of
distribution or use.
Ex. Aerosol spray can, blister packs, bottle
 Secondary packaging -
Is outside the primary packaging perhaps used to group
primary package together.
Ex. Boxes, cartons
 Tertiary packaging- is used to bulk handling and
shipping.
Ex. Barrel, container, edge protector
Glass
Plastics
Rubbers
Paper/card boards
Metals
TYPES OF PACKAGING MATERIALS USED
FOR PHARMACEUTICAL PACKAGING
FUNCTIONS OF PACKAGING
• Product Identification
• Product Protection
• Storage function
• Loading and transport functions
The degree of protection required
Compatibility with the dosage form
Customer convenience e.g. size, weight of dosage form,
Filling method
Sterilization method to be employed and cost
THE CHOICE OF PACKAGING MATERIAL
WILL DEPEND UPON:
Why packaging development is needed?
 In India, pharma packaging today occupies a significant
portion of the overall drugs market.
 Earlier, the requirement of pharma packaging focused
exclusively on preserving the quality of enclosed
medication.
 Now, they are extended to cover such criteria :
• Prevention of product tampering and counterfeiting
• Assurance of product dispensing accuracy
• Promotion of patient compliance with product dosage
schedules.
Reckitt Benkiser launched the easily portable
“Handy tube” version of its popular Strepsils line of
sore throat lozenges.
Moov – it was earlier available in tubes, but it is now
also available as an aerosol spray which is convenient,
easy to apply.
FACTORS INFLUENCING THE CHOICE
OF PACKAGE
 The product.
 The market.
 The distribution system.
RECENT TRENDS
 Robots in primary packaging
 Radio-frequency identification(RFID)
 Electronic-Enabled Packaging
 Unit-dose packaging for greater dosage
control
 Packaging against counterfeiting
 Child-resistant packaging
 Eco-friendly pharmaceutical packaging
 The talking packaging : “Self Talk”
ROBOTS IN PRIMARY PACKAGING
TECHNOLOGY
Motion control, high speed and
robotic dexterity makes it suitable
for product orientation, collation, and
repetitive tasks
Capable of speeds above 40 picks
per minute.
This can count, stack, load, or
unload medical devices, pouches,
and other related items.
RADIO- FREQUENCY
IDENTIFICATION(RFID)
 RFID tagging to simplify shipping, receiving,
inventory location, and control has been mandated
by the Department of defence, several other
retailers, and various hospitals.
 Carry and collect the data needed to track and trace
product through the supply chain
 Prevent counterfeiting and diversion
ELECTRONIC-ENABLED PACKAGING
In February 2011, Finnish packaging company StoraIn February 2011, Finnish packaging company Stora
Enso Launched this product.Enso Launched this product.
The removal of pills is tracked and the informationThe removal of pills is tracked and the information
can be sent to an electronic database automaticallycan be sent to an electronic database automatically

Catalent’s Delpouch started kit
packaging system, designed for
topical treatment.
Delpouch measures the right
amount of topical cream or
ointment to simplify the
application process.
 Packaging can now connect with
computers using sensor technology.
Allowing patients to log their feedback
on side effect s and treatment efficacy
and upload it
UNIT-DOSE PACKAGING FOR
GREATER DOSAGE CONTROL
With more of a focus on outpatient care and the self-
regulation of medicine, there’s greater onus on patient to
take the right medications in the right amount.
CHILD RESISTANT PACKAGING
Keeping drugs secure from young children is
one of the main objectives of pharmaceutical
packaging companies.
Child resistant packaging was introduced in late
1960s and is most commonly used as safety
cap on bottles that has to be pushed down
before being opened.
Packaging company Amcor Flexibles followed suit
a few year later and Introduced a CR regulations in
Europe and US.
 UK packaging producer Burgopak’s sliding CR blister pack
Can only be opened by applying pressure at two separate
Points on the packaging . The blister pack and information leaflets
are integrated with the outer box.
In 2006 Stora Enso and Bosch packaging launched Pharma
Small hands resistant (SHR) a re closable and tear resistant
carton ideal for highly toxic drugs which Test Pak, Inc. Started
Using and producing the same year.
ECO FRIENDLY PHARMA PACKAGING
Environmental considerations must not lead to
any compromise on a package’s safety or
accessibility.
New pharmaceutical packaging concepts are
beginning to emerge that address
environmental concerns without sacrificing
packaging advances made in last decade.
o In August 2011 Keystone Folding Box Company
and Legacy Pharmaceutical Packaging launched
their Eco slide-RX sustainable compliance
packaging.
The pack is made from 100% recycled material
using unbleached paper board
and a clay coated surface.
Syreen Prefilled Syringe Design
Packaging weight
reduction- 30% and
volume- 50%, compared
to standard packaging
 Environmental awareness is even starting to extend to the
syringe market.
 Syreen syringes replace glass with cyclic olefin polymer
(COP).
Talk Pack-Wipac
 Talk packs does not require
any microchips.
 The dot code is simply printed
on top of images and texts
using a special varnish.
 A special pen shaped reader is used to retrieve the stored
information and to replay it as audio files and render speech,
music, or sounds audible and thus the consumer can
obtain information.
Aeroneb Solo Nebulizer
 The Aeroneb Solo Nebulizer is designed to
operate in line with standard ventilator
circuits and mechanical ventilators.
 Operated without changing patient
ventilator parameters.
 Refilled without interrupting
ventilation.
 Operated on its internal
rechargeable battery for up to
45 minutes when fully charged.
RECENT TREND IN PHARMACEUTICAL
PACKAGING
CONCLUSION
Packaging should provide protection, identification,
information, convenience and compliance for a product
during storage, carriage, display and until such time the
product is consumed. Pharmaceutical packaging should
look into concerned issues like child safety, correct
dosage, patient traceability, tampering and diversion of
pharmaceutical products. Now, major additional concerns
of drug counterfeiting and bring a new sense of urgency
to medical packaging manufacturers and hospitals, clinics,
assisted living facilities, doctors' offices and, the individual
consumer.
