As described by B. Joseph Pine II in his landmark book on the subject, mass customization is the
production of individually customized goods and services at mass production prices.1 In reality, true
market–of–one producers are relatively few: the personal fitness trainer, the local tailor who makes
you a suit from scratch, the business consultant who works closely with you to help you develop an
online e–commerce site that meets your unique requirements. The same forces that push companies
along the continuum from mass market to market–of–one require that they think deeply about
segmentation, targeting, and positioning, the tools of the trade described in this chapter.

Segmentation Segmentation is a practice that seeks out pieces of the total market that contain
customers with identifiable characteristics, as defined by income, age, personal interests, ethnic
background, special needs, and so forth. The point of segmentation is to break a mass market into

do two things: (1) create goods and services that are better tailored to the needs of specific

organizations. Explain the ways in which mass customization can be applied to service firms as
well. While mass customization is a viable option in manufacturing with digital factories and
employing lean manufacturing designs, service firms have to employ a more productive

efficiently is called mass customization. When product components are put together in a
modularized way, the mass customization can reduce the company's all in costs. The mass
customizing companies are driven by observing individual customer request and by comparing them
to what other customers have requested. As the demand for customizing products rise, companies
are offering build to order services to enable customers to configure products to their own needs.
Utilizing mass customization provides a better matching product to its customers liking as its chosen
customization level increases. However, if a company chooses not to use mass customization, they
may result in selling a standard product. Price customization can lead to a broader adoption of mass

Extrusion moulding, additive fabrication and water jet cutting are the three production methods
which this project will explore in the context of a joint at an architecturally viable scale. In

During the last 15 years, choice has become an important ingredient of consumer purchasing
decisions. Within this timeframe, the number of automobile models has increased from 140 to 260;
the selection of soft drinks from 20 to 90. Today, the U.S. market alone offers consumers 3,000
brands of beer, 50 brands of bottled water, and 340 kinds of breakfast cereals. Retailers today not
only want more collections per season but also more styles within the season. Various companies
deliver new lines of clothes to their stores every four to six weeks. H&M and Zara, for example,
have achieved this by speeding up the design cycle with computer technology. Zara uses data from
its 426 stores to spot new trends, and offers 10,000 new products a year. TopShop sells as many as
30 pairs of knickers a minute, 6,000 pairs of jeans a day and 35,000 pairs of shoes every week. The
shelf life of a garment has fallen from six months to a few weeks. This new consumer–oriented
marketplace is forcing manufacturers to change from a "plan and push" product chain mentality to a

Begging in the early 1700's with Rose Bertin, a french fashion designer empolyed by queen marie
antiontte empolyed to produce unique and one of pieces for the queen. Haute couture continued into
the 18th century with the wealthy and elite who would travel to paris for customised and unique
garments and bring them back to their own towns to be copied by local dress makers.
It wasn 't until the mid 1800's with charles fredrick worth that dress making was truly
revolutionised. Worth made it so that dressmakers become artisans of garments: a fashion designer.
Worth would prapare a portfolio of designs that where often shown on live models. Clients would
then select a modem specify colors, and fabrics and would then have a duplicate garments tailor
made to the clients specifications in worths workshop. Worth was the first person to combine
individual tailoring with a standardisation of the ready to wear clothing industry which was also

Customization and service quality are both important aspects for any successful restaurant. These
components have many different qualities that can ultimately be very beneficial for businesses or

Our textbook is missing three specific things that are noted in a great deal of the literature and
appear to be very important to the study of mass customization: (1) conflicts as to the proper
definition, (2) essential elements of a proper mass customization scheme, and (3) the benefits and

The overall length of pull was short, the comb height was non existent and I would have to break
cheek weld all the time, and lastly the pitch was awful. The pitch is what I'll cover seeing how it was
