This literature review discusses and compares the advantages and disadvantages of screw-retained versus cement-retained dental implant prostheses. Some key factors that are affected by the retention method include ease of fabrication, cost, esthetics, access, occlusion, retention/risk of loss of retention, retrievability, fit, and effect on peri-implant tissues. While cement-retained restorations are generally easier to fabricate and offer better access, screw-retained prostheses allow for easier retrieval and place fewer limitations on implant positioning. Overall, the review found that each method has benefits and drawbacks, and clinical situations may dictate a preference for one method over the other.
