                                      Sarcelles, France



     Following an equipment loan from eInstruction to explore best practice, Olivier Godet, modern
literature teacher at the Chantereine high school in Sarcelles (95) describes his use of both fixed
and mobile interactive whiteboards with its 5th and 3rd grades (students aged 13 years old and
15years old).



The Chantereine High School took part in the digital plan started in 2009 to run until 2013 issued by the
General Council of Val d'Oise and funded with the assistance of the Ile-de-France Region. The department
has equipped 36 of its 108 high schools with around 700 interactive whiteboards and hundreds of laptops.
Olivier Godet’s classroom has an eInstruction interactive whiteboard, and eInstruction issued a loan for a
mobile interactive whiteboard, Mobi View.



The 24 class members students were asked to work on the trailer of the American movie Avatar after
having studied the narrative format and structures of adventure stories in prior lessons.



The class had previously completed a mind map around the narrative
format of an adventure story to explore its distinctive elements, including
the regular presence of the themes of travel. In the lesson, students were
asked to watch the trailer carefully. A discussion then asked the students
to apply and link what they had studied on the adventure story to the
trailer that they just watched. During this exchange, Olivier was able to
interact with the students by moving around the classroom, managing
everything on the interactive whiteboard through the Mobi View.



What was noticeable was that all students, even the shyest, were willing to share their comments. While
some were aimed at their teacher, other students bounced remarks and ideas off of each other, creating
the lesson content. The concepts discussed in the mind map, which was extracted and copied into a page
of the eInstruction Workspace software, are illustrated with images captured from the trailer.

As a result of this, students become completely and collectively involved in their course. With the
ability for the teacher to move around the classroom, all students are engaged and involved; there was not
one student who did not take part in the lesson and did not participate.




When asked by Olivier how the director of Avatar symbolizes the journey, translating this into an image,
students talked about the mental transfer represented by a tunnel, a journey that evokes both the imaginary
and distant. This trip is also a discovery, as shown by the watchful eyes of the main character of his
environment. This ‘discovery’ was illustrated with two pictures of the character that looks up to the left and
right when he arrives in this new world. Captured images from the trailer and associated words can then be
annotated with Workspace and the Mobi View annotated according to the indications of the students.



Elements are added throughout the session; for example, a reference to love raised by the students allows
links to be drawn from a previous lesson on Michel Strogoff. When students were asked to define the film in
one word such as "extraordinary", "fantastic" and "wonderful", these were taken by the teacher and added
to the interactive whiteboard.

Olivier explains that this kind of tool has the ability to "change the exchange with the student; the
teacher is no longer the one they are looking to, but the educational content."

This is also true for the
second class of Olivier
where 23 students were
correcting an exercise on
the vocabulary of time and
space. Students will correct
these     on     the     fixed
interactive whiteboard. It
leads to a more flexible
perception      of     errors,
authorized        by       the
interactive whiteboard and
its ease of correction.

The use of Mobi View allows the teacher Olivier moving among his pupils to extract a word of the exercise
when it is not well written, and copy it to a new page of the Workspace software. The term can then then
identified and analyzed by the students: its nature, kind, its root and so forth. This immediate research
conducted by students at the interactive whiteboard using an online dictionary, gives an opportunity to
dispel any doubt. The Mobi View therefore allows the teacher to move around the classroom and engage
all students, while making sure that their concentration is focused on the table and educational content.

Case study - France - French class in Chantereine High School, Sarcelles

  • 1. 2012 French class in Chantereine High School, Sarcelles, France Following an equipment loan from eInstruction to explore best practice, Olivier Godet, modern literature teacher at the Chantereine high school in Sarcelles (95) describes his use of both fixed and mobile interactive whiteboards with its 5th and 3rd grades (students aged 13 years old and 15years old). The Chantereine High School took part in the digital plan started in 2009 to run until 2013 issued by the General Council of Val d'Oise and funded with the assistance of the Ile-de-France Region. The department has equipped 36 of its 108 high schools with around 700 interactive whiteboards and hundreds of laptops. Olivier Godet’s classroom has an eInstruction interactive whiteboard, and eInstruction issued a loan for a mobile interactive whiteboard, Mobi View. The 24 class members students were asked to work on the trailer of the American movie Avatar after having studied the narrative format and structures of adventure stories in prior lessons. The class had previously completed a mind map around the narrative format of an adventure story to explore its distinctive elements, including the regular presence of the themes of travel. In the lesson, students were asked to watch the trailer carefully. A discussion then asked the students to apply and link what they had studied on the adventure story to the trailer that they just watched. During this exchange, Olivier was able to interact with the students by moving around the classroom, managing everything on the interactive whiteboard through the Mobi View. What was noticeable was that all students, even the shyest, were willing to share their comments. While some were aimed at their teacher, other students bounced remarks and ideas off of each other, creating the lesson content. The concepts discussed in the mind map, which was extracted and copied into a page of the eInstruction Workspace software, are illustrated with images captured from the trailer.   • 2. 2012 As a result of this, students become completely and collectively involved in their course. With the ability for the teacher to move around the classroom, all students are engaged and involved; there was not one student who did not take part in the lesson and did not participate. When asked by Olivier how the director of Avatar symbolizes the journey, translating this into an image, students talked about the mental transfer represented by a tunnel, a journey that evokes both the imaginary and distant. This trip is also a discovery, as shown by the watchful eyes of the main character of his environment. This ‘discovery’ was illustrated with two pictures of the character that looks up to the left and right when he arrives in this new world. Captured images from the trailer and associated words can then be annotated with Workspace and the Mobi View annotated according to the indications of the students. Elements are added throughout the session; for example, a reference to love raised by the students allows links to be drawn from a previous lesson on Michel Strogoff. When students were asked to define the film in one word such as "extraordinary", "fantastic" and "wonderful", these were taken by the teacher and added to the interactive whiteboard. Olivier explains that this kind of tool has the ability to "change the exchange with the student; the teacher is no longer the one they are looking to, but the educational content."   • 3. 2012 This is also true for the second class of Olivier where 23 students were correcting an exercise on the vocabulary of time and space. Students will correct these on the fixed interactive whiteboard. It leads to a more flexible perception of errors, authorized by the interactive whiteboard and its ease of correction. The use of Mobi View allows the teacher Olivier moving among his pupils to extract a word of the exercise when it is not well written, and copy it to a new page of the Workspace software. The term can then then identified and analyzed by the students: its nature, kind, its root and so forth. This immediate research conducted by students at the interactive whiteboard using an online dictionary, gives an opportunity to dispel any doubt. The Mobi View therefore allows the teacher to move around the classroom and engage all students, while making sure that their concentration is focused on the table and educational content.
