Skills and knowledge gained at George
Mason University’s School of Conflict Analysis
and Resolution
Building community and participatory democracy
to enhance social security and wellbeing are my
two academic and career goals, thus, I chose the
most adequate coursework to meet them
 Courses related to
Community:
 Psychosocial Trauma
and Healing
 Collaborative
Community Planning
 Conflict Assessment
and Program Evaluation
 Knowledge and Skills
gained:
 Fostering community
building and resilience is
necessary to
have participatory
democracy. Generating,
monitoring and
evaluating projects to
improve quality of life
within communities are
some of my skills as well
as building peace through
healing.
Participatory democracy is necessary in
order to have community security and
equal and sustainable development
 Courses related to
Democracy and
Security:
 State and Institution
Building
 Conflict in Development
 Philosophy and
Methods of Conflict
Research
 Knowledge and Skills
gained:
 Empowering communities
to meaningfully participate
in the community decision
making processes is one
of my skills. Another asset
I gained is a rounded
understanding of security
issues in Mexico and Latin
America
Coursework and Internship
Oaxaca’s
Communities
 The main theory source
for the workshops I
conducted in Oaxaca was
my Trauma and Healing
class. However, I used
techniques learnt in my
Advanced Skills course,
Introduction to Conflict
Analysis and Resolution,
and Reflective Practice
International Peace
and Security Institute
 The understanding of the
therories about Identity,
Basic Human Needs,
Relative Deprivation,
Human Security,
Cognitive Dissonance,
and Dialogue were the
base for designing
simulations and
understanding
International context’s
elements at IPSI
Conclusion
Contributing to solve Mexico’s community conflicts and
security challenges are my professional and personal goals.
In the face of conflict and crime the only answer is the
strengthening of communities and social institutions. From the
two very different places where I interned, I gained skills to
cope those challenges.
I learnt to plan an intervention in the field and to evaluate it in
the classroom. I learnt to plan a participatory exercise at
school and I collaborated with an educative symposium
devoted to grasp and share knowledge within its audience.
My two internships gave me experiential learning
of conflict interventions’ aspects I would never had
obtained otherwise.
Knowledge was formative; experience was
determining.
