This document summarizes a research paper that proposes modifications to the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol to improve the usability of Guaranteed Time Slots (GTS) in cluster-tree networks. It introduces the concept of a Beacon Only Period (BOP) located in the inactive period and uses virtual GTS to avoid beacon collisions and allow GTS reuse. The proposal is evaluated for a chain topology network, where it is shown to provide constant efficiency as the network size increases but achieves very low throughput when GTS is used.
