Accidentology
Rescues’ study on the Gouter
route, between Tete Rousse
refuge and Gouter refuge, from
1990 to 2011.
Made with the help of PGHM,
Rescue team from french
mounted police.
February 2012.

Study n°2 :
Analysis of falling rocks and numbers of ascents
during summer 2011
Accidentologie-Goûter 12
Study made by engineers in geotechnics
Observation : from 20th june to 18th september 2011
Observations made by Heïdi SEVESTRE, alpinist and doctorate in glaciology
• 11 sessions from 2 to 4 days in duration
• 42 days total of observation

CONCLUSIONS
Event : 75 % falling rocks between 10 am and 4 pm.
Most critical period : one event of rock fall every 17 minutes between 11 am and
12 am
No change with or without snow.
Frequency : 17 000 to 17 500 passages during summertime.
One person every 105 second between 12 am and 1pm
Almost 1000 persons are subjected to rock fall during the season.
Most dangerous period : during sunny weather combine with the middle of the
day => during the most important crossings.

security measures

Accidentologie-Goûter 20

Rejected solutions of security
> Limitation of crossings : illusory
> information, cable :
Necessary but not sufficient.
> Purgings and anchorings: difficult, dangerous,
unsuited.
> Protection by nets: landscape impact, heavy and
dangerous maintenance.
> Protection by reinforced concrete work: problem of
solidity and integration in the environment.
> Himalayan bridge:
First idea, but blocks bouncing too high (35 m), fast risk
of destruction, to 25 m, too heavy landscape impact
with 35m
Accidentologie-Goûter 22
One solution to think about : a small tunnel
Accidentologie-Goûter 23
Estimate cost :
821 K€ TTC for a 107 m tunnel
1 084 K€ TTC for a 168 m tunnel

Foundation goals
To bring objective elements to nourish the reflexions.
To awake.
To defend the beautiful risk, not the Russian roulette.
To promote the reduction of the objective risk, without denaturing the mountain.
To reflect on the basis of concrete solution, not only of the intentions.
