Also known as chemodectoma.
Potato tumor.
carotid body ganglioma.
It is a highly vascularized tumor arise from the
paraganglion cells of the carotid body.
Located at the carotid bifurcation.
accounts 0.6% of head and neck tumors
60% are CBTs
5-10% are malignant

Anatomy
Carotid body is a small, reddish-brown,
oval structure, located in the
posteromedial aspect of the carotid
artery bifurcation.
It receives its blood supply primarily
from the external carotid artery via
ascending pharyngeal artery.
It is innervated by the hering nerve,
branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve
IX.

Typical Presentation
Usually affects middle-aged adults (rare in children).
Slow-growing, often asymptomatic for years.
Presents as a painless palpable neck mass in the anterior triangle at the carotid
bifurcation.
Bilateral in ~5% of cases (more common in familial disease).

Examination Findings
Soft, elastic, non-
tender, pulsatile
swelling.
Fontaine sign: Moves
horizontally but is fixed
vertically.
Bruit/thrill may be
present due to high
vascularity.

Neurological Features (≈10%)
Cranial nerve palsy involving CN IX, X, XI, XII or sympathetic chain.
May cause:
Dysphagia
Hoarseness
Tongue weakness/deviation
Shoulder weakness
Horner syndrome
