Where bamboos grow?
â€ĸ Bamboos are the most
common industrial materials in
the Philippines.
â€ĸ They grow in almost all places
of the country – along the
shores, river banks, on
hillsides, mountain tops, plains
and in forests.

Some Characteristics of Bamboo
â€ĸ Bamboo stems are composed of pliant and
flexible bundle of fibers.
â€ĸ They can be split into tiny pieces and still
can be bent without breaking.
â€ĸ Bamboo does not shrink after it has been
dried.
â€ĸ It retains its strength, color, flexibility and
other qualities.
Cutting Bamboos
â€ĸ In cutting with a sharp bolo, several slanting
cuts should be made around the bamboo
until the piece is cut.
â€ĸ In cutting with a saw, a kerf about 1/8 inch
deep should be cut around the surface of the
bamboo.
Cutting Bamboos
â€ĸ A knife is used for cutting only
small pieces of bamboo.
Splitting Bamboos
â€ĸ The bolo should be held firmly against
the end of the bamboo with the cutting
edge perpendicular to the end.
â€ĸ A mallet should be used to tap the false
edge of the bolo until the bamboo is cut
in two parts.
Scraping Bamboos
â€ĸ Bamboo may be scraped with a pocket
knife, a bolo, a spoke shave, or a piece
of broken glass.
â€ĸ It is necessary to remove the outer skin
of the bamboo in order to expose the
skin proper.
Transferring Bamboos
â€ĸ When transferring a design, use a
piece of carbon paper in tracing the
design.
â€ĸ A slight movement or shifting of your
sketch will destroy the outline of the
figure being transferred by the carbon
paper.
In using the knife, remember the
following:
â€ĸ Always have the knife sharp;
â€ĸ Hold it firmly and never drop it on the
floor;
â€ĸ Never play with it; and
â€ĸ When not in uses, always keep it
closed.
Carving out Designs
â€ĸ When carving, do this slow at first.
â€ĸ You will gain speed as you keep
on practicing how to cut out
designs.
Pyrography
â€ĸ The process of burning the skin
of the bamboo using hot wire.
Pyrography
Steps:
1. Make a loop at the end of a piece of wire
(round, square, heart-shaped, plain)
2. Heat the loop until it is red hot.
3. Hold the bamboo firmly in a vise.
4. Burn the designs carefully on the bamboo.
5. Repeat the process until you have finished.
Nailing Bamboos
â€ĸ Before nailing a piece of bamboo to a
wooden base or attachment, you must bore
a little hole with a brad awl or a hand drill.
â€ĸ Never nail a piece of bamboo without having
first bored a hole in it.
Sanding your Bamboos
â€ĸ After you have outlined on your
project all the designs which you
like to appear, sand rough edges
and surfaces of your project.
Painting Projects
â€ĸ Bamboo articles lose their beauty
when painted. However, there are
some types of projects which need
painting instead of finishing with
shellac or varnish.
Polishing surfaces of Bamboos
â€ĸ Polishing and varnishing bamboos
require plenty of care because the
finish will determine the quality of the
project.
â€ĸ Shellac and varnish evaporate quickly,
so you should apply them fast.
Polishing surfaces of Bamboos
Remember:
- Do not apply too much.
- Before applying the second coating, be
sure that the first coating has dried
completely.
Polishing surfaces of Bamboos
â€ĸ Varnish is applied with brush. Unlike
painting, the brush should be applied
briskly.
â€ĸ Varnish dries fast.
â€ĸ Always apply varnish in a place where
there is no dust.
Polishing surfaces of Bamboos
â€ĸ Shellac is applied with a soft ball
cloth.
â€ĸ Do not apply a thick coating, as
this will make the surface look dull
and ugly.
