conventions of real media products?
THE FRONT COVER – DIFFERENCES
The use of the magazines is
                               completely different as my
                                  magazine is for college
life, where as Kerrang! Is a
                                     music magazine.
The sell and cover lines are
                            different. They have used different
                                  text and colour to mine.
Kerrang! Has used all music based
cover lines, where as my college
tips magazine has cover lines about
                                   things such as; ASPIRE.
                                     The main image for
                                  Kerrang! Is a well known
                                 rock singer. In my college
                                   magazine it is a fellow
                                   student. Therefore the
                                 model credits are different
                                            as well.
The use of colours in Kerrang!
                                      is Black, white and
                                    yellow, this is normally
                                followed through every week
except for some issues. In my
                                 college magazine the main
                                colour scheme is black, white
                                          and purples.
                              The Models pose in Kerrang!’s
is different to mine as Hayley
                                  Williams has her one arm
behind her head to create a
                              ‘rebel’ and a ‘I don’t care’ sort
                                   of image. In my college
                              magazine the model looks very
                                 sweet and innocent with a
                                 smile and a normal stance.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
CONTENTS PAGE - DIFFERENCES The actual
                                    content in
                                         Kerrang! Is
                                          different
                                       compared too
                                           college
                                    life, offering more
                                        and a wider
                                           range.
                              In Kerrang! They mention the
                                  masthead again on the
                               contents page. College tips
                                 fail to do this, therefore
                                readers are not reminded
                              what the magazine is called.
This is not good especially as
                                   the magazine is new.

                              Kerrang! Uses more than
                                one image relating to
                              the content and offers a
                                picture of the editor.
                                College tips although
                                  having numerous
                               pictures does not offer
an image of the editor. A
                                  picture makes the
                                 magazine personal.
                               The layout of the contents
                                    page is different in
                                Kerrang! And college tips
                                  as Kerrang! Goes for a
                                 image to dominate the
                               page where as College tips
                                 has mainly writing with
                                 the odd image to relate
                                            too.
What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of
constructing this product?

To make my magazine cover and contents
page I used Moodle, A canon digital
camera, photo shop and InDesign. I used
Moodle to collect resources and information.
I used a canon digital camera to take images
such as the front cover. All images used are
taken by myself. I then used photo shop to
edit the images to change things like lighting. I
also used Photoshop to make my front cover.
Lastly, I used InDesign to make the contents
                                                 page.
By using the canon digital camera I could ensure all
my images are to the best quality possible. When
taking the image for the front cover, I made my
image an MCU (Medium close up) this is the most
common shot to use for a magazine cover. Whilst
doing this I also made sure I left room at the top
for my Masthead and abiding by the rule of thirds.
I told my model to pose naturally and relaxed -
whilst still looking happy. With the tree in the
background I thought this added to the effect to
the student feel. Realistically, I should of maybe
taken the image when the sun wasn’t as bright as
the distorted the image a little.

I used Adobe Photoshop to make my student look like a
model. This acting as an inspirational figure for the College
                                  tips readers.
In the picture on the left, my College tips cover page is not
completely finished as lighting and colour has to be changed.
In the picture on the right my College tips magazine has been
finished off professionally, using Adobe Photoshop to
                                  manipulate text and images.
With the text I added effects such as back drop shadow and
glow to make it stand out and catch the readers eye.
My masthead has an effect called ‘fish eye’ used on it, this
making my Masthead different to normal Mastheads and
                                  therefore breaking the rules almost.
Using InDesign for my contents page
                                                      This is me
                                                      drawing a
To make my contents page I used InDesign. This is box to
not good for images but is a very god tool to use make
                                                      shapes on
for shapes. I created boxes and text to make my my
Contents stand out. To respond to the actual contents
layout of my contents page it isn’t much different page.
to your average magazine contents page. Whilst
making my contents page I made sure I stayed to
the cover page colour scheme. I didn’t use any
drastic effects because to me I think they look
quite tacky and unprofessional. The thing I would
change about my contents if I were to do it again
would be to include the magazine masthead.
Before actually using Photoshop or InDesign I
planned out my general layout for both the cover
and contents page as I understand how important
this is, although making minor changes as I went
 along.

  • 1. AS MEDIA UNIT Preliminary Task – Cover and contents of a college magazine. Preliminary Task evaluation and example.
  • 2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? THE FRONT COVER - SIMILARITIES Masthead Cover lines Main cover line Date line Selling line Main image Straplines Model credit Price
  • 3. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? THE FRONT COVER – DIFFERENCES The use of the magazines is completely different as my magazine is for college life, where as Kerrang! Is a music magazine. The sell and cover lines are different. They have used different text and colour to mine. Kerrang! Has used all music based cover lines, where as my college tips magazine has cover lines about things such as; ASPIRE. The main image for Kerrang! Is a well known rock singer. In my college magazine it is a fellow student. Therefore the model credits are different as well. The use of colours in Kerrang! is Black, white and yellow, this is normally followed through every week except for some issues. In my college magazine the main colour scheme is black, white and purples. The Models pose in Kerrang!’s is different to mine as Hayley Williams has her one arm behind her head to create a ‘rebel’ and a ‘I don’t care’ sort of image. In my college magazine the model looks very sweet and innocent with a smile and a normal stance.
  • 4. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? CONTENTS PAGE - SIMILARITIES Highlights of front cover Text layout content Extra images Use of subheadings Layout of columns and features in the magazine Editors note
  • 5. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? CONTENTS PAGE - DIFFERENCES The actual content in Kerrang! Is different compared too college life, offering more and a wider range. In Kerrang! They mention the masthead again on the contents page. College tips fail to do this, therefore readers are not reminded what the magazine is called. This is not good especially as the magazine is new. Kerrang! Uses more than one image relating to the content and offers a picture of the editor. College tips although having numerous pictures does not offer an image of the editor. A picture makes the magazine personal. The layout of the contents page is different in Kerrang! And college tips as Kerrang! Goes for a image to dominate the page where as College tips has mainly writing with the odd image to relate too.
  • 6. What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product? To make my magazine cover and contents page I used Moodle, A canon digital camera, photo shop and InDesign. I used Moodle to collect resources and information. I used a canon digital camera to take images such as the front cover. All images used are taken by myself. I then used photo shop to edit the images to change things like lighting. I also used Photoshop to make my front cover. Lastly, I used InDesign to make the contents page.
  • 7. By using the canon digital camera I could ensure all my images are to the best quality possible. When taking the image for the front cover, I made my image an MCU (Medium close up) this is the most common shot to use for a magazine cover. Whilst doing this I also made sure I left room at the top for my Masthead and abiding by the rule of thirds. I told my model to pose naturally and relaxed - whilst still looking happy. With the tree in the background I thought this added to the effect to the student feel. Realistically, I should of maybe taken the image when the sun wasn’t as bright as the distorted the image a little. I used Adobe Photoshop to make my student look like a model. This acting as an inspirational figure for the College tips readers. In the picture on the left, my College tips cover page is not completely finished as lighting and colour has to be changed. In the picture on the right my College tips magazine has been finished off professionally, using Adobe Photoshop to manipulate text and images. With the text I added effects such as back drop shadow and glow to make it stand out and catch the readers eye. My masthead has an effect called ‘fish eye’ used on it, this making my Masthead different to normal Mastheads and therefore breaking the rules almost.
  • 8. Using InDesign for my contents page This is me drawing a To make my contents page I used InDesign. This is box to not good for images but is a very god tool to use make shapes on for shapes. I created boxes and text to make my my Contents stand out. To respond to the actual contents layout of my contents page it isn’t much different page. to your average magazine contents page. Whilst making my contents page I made sure I stayed to the cover page colour scheme. I didn’t use any drastic effects because to me I think they look quite tacky and unprofessional. The thing I would change about my contents if I were to do it again would be to include the magazine masthead. Before actually using Photoshop or InDesign I planned out my general layout for both the cover and contents page as I understand how important this is, although making minor changes as I went along.
