1. Site Conditions & Analysis (10%) 
In groups (combination of 2 tutorial groups from Project 1), conduct site analysis of the physical context, social, cultural and/or 
historical issues within the overall site. Use the following reference as a framework for your recording and analysis of your site: 
White, E. 2004. Site Analysis: Diagramming Information for Architectural Design. Tallahassee, Florida: Architectural Media Ltd. 
Collect data and record on the following using physical maps/diagrams and models: 
 Site survey: provide dimensions of its width and depth and indicate any adjacent buildings at the levels of plans, elevations 
and sections to create an accurate record of what currently exists 
 Orientation (sun path) and Climate (rainfall  temperature) 
 Site topography / contours 
 Access and Circulation 
 Existing Structure and Materiality of the site surrounding 
 Vegetation and Hydrology 
 Views and Vistas 
 Historical and Cultural 
 SWOT 
2. Birdwatch Tower (20%) 
 Individually, produce your personal interpretation of the site in the form of sketches. 
 In group of two, you are to begin with a volume in the form of a solid cube 3 x 3 x 3 meter. By selecting a character, you are 
to design a Bird Watch Tower at Fraser’s Hill for the purpose of bird watching/contemplation/simply just to enjoy the 
view. It shall include the activities of resting, meditation, observation, viewing etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit 
and be incorporated with the design. This structure should correspond to the site that you have chosen. Adequate 
access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory. 
Tasks
Aim 
The aim of this project is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation, with the emphasis on the 
user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. Students will be shown the importance of 
using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.

Final Submission 
The final submission for this project will include: 
1. Final presentation of the site analysis is to be presented digitally, supported by a 20mins verbal presentation. 
2. Individually, produce FIVE A5 of your personal interpretation of the site in the form of sketches. 
3. A series of detail drawings (1:50 scale) as a set of a series of plans, sections, elevations, axons and so on to explore the 
cube that must be done freehand and beautifully rendered. The drawings must demonstrate the concept that has 
informed the design. 
4. A series of models (1:50 scale) a minimum of four which includes: 3 process models and a final model. The final model 
must be beautifully crafted with balsa, model board, perspect, brown board, etc to be left in their natural colour and to be 
mounted on a an A3 MDF board to be submitted in a box. The base must be manipulated to create texture and reflect the 
site characteristic.

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING & DESIGN Centre for Modern Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia (MASSA) USER & CONTEXT Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Architecture / (Architecture) Module: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2 (ARC 1126/ARC 60205) Project 2a: Site Condition & Analysis and Birdwatch Tower @ Fraser’s Hill pg. 1 Project 2 Group of 2 LO 1,2 30% Drawings and models Pin up/ Verbal presentation 1. Site Conditions & Analysis (10%) In groups (combination of 2 tutorial groups from Project 1), conduct site analysis of the physical context, social, cultural and/or historical issues within the overall site. Use the following reference as a framework for your recording and analysis of your site: White, E. 2004. Site Analysis: Diagramming Information for Architectural Design. Tallahassee, Florida: Architectural Media Ltd. Collect data and record on the following using physical maps/diagrams and models: Site survey: provide dimensions of its width and depth and indicate any adjacent buildings at the levels of plans, elevations and sections to create an accurate record of what currently exists Orientation (sun path) and Climate (rainfall temperature) Site topography / contours Access and Circulation Existing Structure and Materiality of the site surrounding Vegetation and Hydrology Views and Vistas Historical and Cultural SWOT 2. Birdwatch Tower (20%) Individually, produce your personal interpretation of the site in the form of sketches. In group of two, you are to begin with a volume in the form of a solid cube 3 x 3 x 3 meter. By selecting a character, you are to design a Bird Watch Tower at Fraser’s Hill for the purpose of bird watching/contemplation/simply just to enjoy the view. It shall include the activities of resting, meditation, observation, viewing etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated with the design. This structure should correspond to the site that you have chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory. Tasks
  • 2. Aim The aim of this project is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation, with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. Students will be shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process. pg. 2 Final Submission The final submission for this project will include: 1. Final presentation of the site analysis is to be presented digitally, supported by a 20mins verbal presentation. 2. Individually, produce FIVE A5 of your personal interpretation of the site in the form of sketches. 3. A series of detail drawings (1:50 scale) as a set of a series of plans, sections, elevations, axons and so on to explore the cube that must be done freehand and beautifully rendered. The drawings must demonstrate the concept that has informed the design. 4. A series of models (1:50 scale) a minimum of four which includes: 3 process models and a final model. The final model must be beautifully crafted with balsa, model board, perspect, brown board, etc to be left in their natural colour and to be mounted on a an A3 MDF board to be submitted in a box. The base must be manipulated to create texture and reflect the site characteristic.
