1) Osamu Tezuka is known as the "Godfather of Anime" for pioneering Japanese animation and manga. 2) In the 1940s and 50s, he produced early successful manga and anime works like "Shin Takarajima", "Kimba the White Lion", and the iconic "Astro Boy". 3) He went on to found animation studios like Mushi Productions and Tezuka Productions, producing many influential early anime TV series and films that helped establish the anime industry.

2. INTRODUCTION
Animated media are known as “anime” in Japanese
language. Globally, the word “anime” refers specially for
animation products from Japan. The term is
interchangeable used with term Manga, which refers to
printed cartoon. The anime are mostly derived from
their relevant Manga. Anime cartoons have their own
unique features which have led to their high popularity,
not only in Japan, but also worldwide. In this small
booklet, very general facts about Anime cartoons are
presented with help of vivid pictures.

3. Evolution of Anime
1907 - かつど しゃしん
This is a very short piece of animation with 3 seconds of
running time which portrays a boy writing something on
the wall and then turns to tip his hat. This has recorded as
the earliest piece of animation from Japan and it can be
considered as the starting point of the anime.
1917 – なかむら がたな
This is also a short animation showing the Japanese style
of animation with the technique called “Cutter
Animation”. Here the animators cut out objects and move
them around and it was much cheaper than the high
quality “Cel Animation” which was being used by the
other countries at that time.
1923
The Great かんと earthquake occurred in 1923 destroyed
lot of animation work and pushed the industry back, but
the world’s animation industry was progressing, like of
Disney. So that Japan felt like they wanted to catch up. As
a result, Japanese animators started to use “Cel
Animation” increasing the quality of their animations.
1933
Animations of 1933 looked much better than the previous
creations with Cutter Animation but weren’t as of Disney.
1939
With the start of World War II most of the animations
depicted the Japanese soldiers fighting with the
Americans. So they didn’t express any artistic value.

1945
The first featured animated film was produced in 1945.
1948
“The Japanese Animation Studio” was founded in 1948
but it didn’t create much under that name.
1956
Japanese Animation Studio was transferred to “とえい
Animation” and it’s still in business today. This was a
massive step in the history of Japanese anime, as it
brought the industry to the worldwide competition.
1958
“The とえい Animation” produced, the first feature
colour animation film named “白蛇伝” (The tale of the
White Serpent). This pushed Japanese animation step
closer to the animations like of Disney.
1961
Japan’s first anime TV series “Instant History” was aired in
1961. Mean while オサム テズカ left とえい Animation
and established 虫 プ ロ ダ ク シ ョ ン which created
influential anime productions.

5. 1965
The japans first coloured anime TV show the “Kimba the
White Lion” was broadcasted. It was one of the most
worldwide popular shows of the time.
1966
The show “Sally the Witch” began to broadcast by Toei
Animation. It is considered as the first shojo anime.
1968
オサム テズカ left 虫プロダクション to work on his
own projects and established “株式会社手塚プロダク
ション”. The 虫プロダクション went bankrupt in 1973.
A new 虫プロダクション was later found in 1977.
1970
The television production “Tomorrow’s Joe”, a boxing
anime became ionic in Japan. It became very popular and
influenced the future sport anime.
1971
The first series of Lupin III became popular in 1971.
1972
After the 虫プロダクション closed and many of the staff
left to form the “MAD HOUSE” and “SUNRISE” in 1972.

6. 1974
“Heidi, Girl of the Alps” simple children drama became
popular even in European countries and achieved
international success.
1976
“Candy Candy” a Shojo anime
1978
Captai Harlock in 1978 seized foreign attention.
1979
“機動戦士ガンダム” the most important series of the
decade came in 1978. Another important landmark of
1979 is “The Castle of カリオストロ”.
1983
“Captain つばさ” a foot ball anime became popular all
over the world in 1983.
1984
“ガイナックス”, “Dragon Ball” achieved success in 1984.
Another massive step in anime was “Nausicaa of the
Valley of the Wind” it was a boundary pushing film that
would expand the industry.

7. 1986
Studio ジブリ’s first film “Laputa : Castle in the Sky” was very
revolutionary and influential and was a good starting point for
the studio.
1988
“アキラ” was The Japan’s most expensive anime ever was
launched in 1988 but wasn’t that much successful. With the
commercial failure of アキラ, nobody wanted to fund big
experimental projects anymore.
The Japanese economy crashed at the end of the decade
making more studios closed.
But in 1980’s the Japanese anime became more mature,
experimental and internationally successful. Therefore it is
called the “Golden Age of Anime”.
1993
“Dragon Ball Z” aired in 1933 became super popular in both
Japan and America.
1995
The two significant shows appeared in 1995 to revive the
industry back again after 1988 failures. “Ghost in the Shell” was
successful in the box office and was critically successful. This
pushed the industry back to its peak in 1988 and encouraged
funding in industry back again. Another one of anime’s biggest
landmarks also came in 1995 as “Neon Genesis Evangelion”.
This massively controversial show was a great impact to the
industry. One of the most outcome of this show was the newly
made trust and freedom given to the creators of the show.

8. After it was successful the directors and writers were
sponsored reading more cinematic directions. So the
animes became more expressive instead of being just
commercial’
1997
“Princess of Mononoke” which was a incredibly expensive
was greatly successful in Japan and America and stood as
the most successful film of the year until the release of
“Titanic”. It pushed the industry to more creative direction
inspiring more people to push the boundaries of anime.
Adapted from video games, the show “POKEMON” hit a
huge success. Another significant creations of that time
was “EVANGELION”.
1998
“Serial Experiments Lain” aired in 1998 was the most
experimental show aired in the decade. It completely
threw away the traditional story telling style. It was very
well received by critics and became very influential for
future anime.

9. 2001
“Spirited Away” was released to massive success in 2001
became the most successful Japanese anime of all time
and still holds that tile today. I was right popular overseas
making millions of dollars from the various countries it
was showed up. “Millennium Actress” was also praised by
the critics worldwide for its unique production though it
was not nearly successful as Spirited Away.
2002
“Mobile Suit Gundam Seed” released in 2002 still stay ass
one of the best-selling anime. Meanwhile anime
adaptation started to become popular during this period.
Manga, light novels were adopted in to anime TV series
and movies.
2004
“Ghost in the shell 2 : Innocence” was successful specially
in America earned 300000$ in the opening weekend.
2006
“Haruhi Suzumiya” became extremely popular in Japan
and even in other countries.
2007
1990s “Evangallion” returned in the form of a new film
series in 2007.

10. 2008
“Gandaan” was released to success under the super robot
anime in 1970s. “The Super Robot Jonar” was also brought
back to the audience in 2008.
2010
The very popular Haruhi Suzumiya returned as “The
Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya” as was a box office
success.
2013
“The Attack on Titan” seized the success worldwide. It was
a great example that anime could break into the western
television market. “The wind Rises” was the highest
grossing Japanese film in 2013 with several nominations.
2014
“No Game No Life” gave the audience a fantastic
experience in a different theme. “Kill la Kill”, “Psycho Pass
2”, “Barakamon” and “Sword Art Online 11” appeared to
be the outstanding launches of 2014.
2017
The outstanding animes of 2017 can be identified as
“ACCA”, “My Hero Academia Season 2”, “Attack on Titan
Season 2” and “Made in Abyss”. “Made in Abyss” can be
identified as the best anime of the year.

generally fabricated with stories that are educational and inspiring for young children to direct towards the right path in their lives.
The beginning of production of these anime dates back to 19th century, where one of the first most animes, “Astro Boy” by Osamu
Tesuka (Father of Anime) was cast. Since then the popular manga magazines such as CoroCoro Comic, Comic BomBom, and
Pucchigumi have been popularizing these cartoons via printed media called manga (漫画). Even the popular anime award

少年アニメ generally have plots with male protagonists,

creatures. The bond between boys, camaraderie, are
exaggeratedly presented. The plot contains the maturity of
the characters to be self-disciplined and successful and
the end.

ロボットアニメ
ロボットアニメ, known in Japan as robot anime,
are anime that feature robots (mecha) in battle. The
genre is broken down into two subcategories; "super
robot", featuring super-sized, implausible robots,
and "real robot", where robots are governed by
realistic physics and technological limitations.
Mecha series cover a wide variety of genres, from
comedy to drama, and the genre has expanded into
other media, such as video game adaptations.
Mecha has also contributed to the popularity of
scale model robots.
The mecha anime genre (as well as Japanese kaiju
films) received a Western homage with the 2013
film Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro.

アニメの父 /アニメのかみ
✓ Tezuka Osamu was born in 3rd November 1928 in Toyonaka,
Osaka, Japan.
✓ He when he was young, he became interested in Disney films and
started to draw comics inspired by Disney animation.
✓ In 1944 he was working in a factory supporting Japanese war
efforts during the World War 11 but continued writing manga.
(manga are the comic or graphic novels crated in Japan or
Japanese language)
✓ In 1945 while studying Medicine in Osaka University he published
his first professional work.
✓ With the help of a manga creator named Shichima Sakai Tezuka
managed to publish his manga “Shin Takarajima” (New Treasure
Island) which became and overnight success.
