Camouflage
 An Animal’s natural coloring or shape that helps it blend into its
natural surroundings
 The term came from the French word “Camoufleur” for disguise
What is Camouflage ?
The ability of animals to blend with
surroundings.
Why Camouflage is Important ?
 Survival against predators.
 Helps in hunting prey.
 Ensures balance in ecosystems.
Types of Camouflage
 Concealing Coloration – Animals match
background (e.g., snow hare in snow).
 Disruptive Coloration – Bold patterns break
body outline (e.g., zebras).
 Disguise – Animals look like objects (e.g., stick
insect).
 Mimicry – Copying appearance of another
animal (e.g., Viceroy butterfly mimics
Monarch).
An animal’s color helps it protect
itself, as well as to get food
Some animals will even
adapt to their environment
by taking on the shape of
objects around them.
Some animals change
color quickly.
Some animals are striped or spotted. The
“Disruptive coloration” makes it hard for
predators to see the animal clearly or
determine how many animals there are.
Other animals
change color with
the seasons.
Some animals change color to show
their moods.
Many animals use countershading to help
camouflage themselves. Countershading is
the protective coloration in which parts
normally in shadow are light and those
exposed to the sky are dark.
Examples in Different Habitats
Forest : Tiger stripes blend with
grass.
Desert: Lizard matches sand.
Ocean: Octopus changes color.
Arctic: Polar bear and snow hare
in snow
