LESSON OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: ✔ Define binary opposition, sign and referent, and organic unity. ✔ Identify these concepts in a prose text. ✔ Explain how these concepts contribute to the meaning of a story. ✔ Analyze a short story using the three literary concepts.
What do these pairs have in common?
• Binary Opposition is the contrast between two opposite ideas, characters, or concepts in a literary work. These opposites help readers understand themes and conflicts. Examples: • Good vs Evil • Love vs Hate • Hope vs Despair • Freedom vs Oppression • Light vs Darkness
Little Red Riding Hood is a young girl who travels through the forest to visit her sick grandmother. Along the way, she meets a clever wolf who tricks her into revealing where her grandmother lives. The wolf arrives first, disguises himself as the grandmother, and waits for Little Red Riding Hood. When she arrives, she realizes something is wrong. In many versions of the story, a woodsman rescues both Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother from the wolf. The story teaches the importance of being cautious, obeying trusted adults, and avoiding strangers. Little Red is kind and innocent. The wolf is evil and deceptive. • This contrast creates conflict.

WHAT IS A SIGN? • A Sign is anything that represents or stands for something else. • A sign can be: a word , an object , image, a symbol and a gesturein a story. Examples: • ❤️= love • ️ 🕊️= peace • ⚠️= danger

EXAMPLE IN A STORY Maria placed a white flower on her mother's grave. Question: • What is the sign? White flower • What is the referent? Purity, Respect, Love and Remembrance Passage • During the power outage, Anna lit a single candle and placed it by the window. Although the room was still dark, its small light gave everyone the courage to keep waiting. • Questions 1. What is the sign in the passage? 2. What is the referent of the candle?
WHAT IS ORGANIC UNITY? • Organic Unity means that all parts of a story work together to create one complete meaning. • Nothing is unnecessary, every character, event, setting, conflict helps develop the story. Example: A boy loses his wallet. (problem) His best friend helps him. (friend helps) The wallet contains money for medicine. ( wallet found) The boy learns the value of friendship.( lesson learned) *Everything contribute to the theme

INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY The Last Seed One summer, the small town of San Isidro suffered from a long drought. The rivers became shallow, the crops dried up, and many families worried about having enough food. Everyone believed that nothing would grow until the rainy season returned.Among the townspeople was Miguel, a hardworking fourteen-year-old boy who loved helping his grandparents on their small farm.
